Nonlinear Dynamics of Electrons in Mesoscopic Nanostructures
D. K. Campbell,* G. R. Berman,* E. H. Cannon, D. M. Pianto
NATO Linkage Grant, NANO.LG 931602
Quantum dots, quantum wires, and heterojunction layers are of great interest for potential novel electronic devices. We studied the role of nonlinear dynamics in the transport of electrons through various mesoscopic nanostructures, including both vertical and lateral semiconductor superlattices and double-barrier resonance tunneling diodes focusing on effects created by the presence of external driving by both dc- and ac-electric and dc-magnetic fields. Our results include predicting (1) deterministic chaos in the electron current, which would appear experimentally as a substantial increase in the effective noise of the device and (2) symmetry-breaking (i.e., the development of a dc bias in response to a purely ac applied electric field or to a suitably aligned dc magnetic field). We are verifying these predictions through collaborations with several experimental groups.

Graduate Seminars and Courses
The program is designed to give each student both a broad background in physics and a high degree of expertise in a chosen field of research. The department is small, and to provide a breadth of coverage in physics, the faculty members have different specialties covering a variety of topics and research interests. Students and faculty members work closely together. The formal graduate course work is handled in small courses or tutorials which can be tailored to the needs of the students. Students may also take introductory or advanced graduate courses at the University of Pennsylvania or at Drexel University in nearby Philadelphia (about thirty minutes by car or train). Some research projects are of an interdisciplinary nature, involving two or more groups in the Physics, Biology, Mathematics, and Chemistry Departments. In the past 20 years (1980-2001), the Physics Department has awarded 19 Ph.D.s and 21 M.A.s. Most of these degree recipients are currently employed as physicists. Many have held postdoctoral fellowships. Some are on college or university faculties, and others are employed by industry or government. Research in the department has been recognized and sponsored by funding from agencies such as the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the American Chemical Society, Research Corporation and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The Physics Department's research programs have also been supported by a variety of generous grants to Bryn Mawr College from many corporations, foundations, and private individuals. The facilities and equipment available for experimental research are of high quality and enable each research group to remain competitive in its area. Graduate students find a supportive and stimulating environment.

1. Quantum Ratchets and Molecular Motors
What is a ratchet?
Ratchets are devices that can make particles flow in one direction without any macroscopic forces. The "flashing ratchet" shown below is an example for how this can work. Some molecular motors in biological systems are also thought to make use of ratchet effects. In general, one means by a 'ratchet' any sort of asymmetric potential. A flashing ratchet: The random diffusion when the potential is off (t = 0.5) is converted into net motion to the left when the ratchet is switched on. A discussion of this Brownian motor, and a nice on-line simulation can be found at

Institut fur Theoretische Physic, Universitat zu Koln Glass-like Phenomena Near a Quantum Critical Point in Disordered Environments Dr Austen Lamacraft, Mesoscopic fluctuations of the pairing susceptibility can significantly influence the nature of the transition to superconductivity close to the upper critical field. Similarly, fluctuations of the spin susceptibility can strongly affect the transition to the bulk ordered state in an itinerant Stoner ferromagnet. In the superconductor, fluctuations of the susceptibility are characterised by spatial correlations which decay as a power-law corresponding to the dimensionality of the system. Such behaviour places the disordered structure in a critical regime where the transition to superconductivity proceeds via the formation of a glass-like phase. We explore the nature and integrity of the superconducting phase and assess the degree to which similar glass-like phenomena appear in other physical contexts.

by David Byrne David Byrne is Senior Lecturer in Social Policy at the University of Durham. He has a long standing interest in the use of measurement as a way of describing social change and is currently completing a book on Complexity and Social Theory for Routledge.
  • The inherently evolutionary and historical nature of complex systems is described.
  • The application of methods derived from chaos studies in the physical sciences is assessed.
  • Traditional techniques of numerical taxonomy and quantitative modelling are considered as tools for describing the evolutionary behaviour of complex social systems over time.
  • The use of qualitative data analysis as a tool for examining complex systems is considered.
Trisoglio defines complexity as ... not a single discipline, but a process that represents the sharing of ideas, methods and experiences across a number of fields. (1995:1).

Albert Einstein: Image and Impact. Recent research suggesting that the universe may not be uniform in all directions may raise serious questions about Albert Einstein's theory of relativity. But it can't spoil Einstein's reputation as one of history's greatest physicists and thinkers.
The American Institute of Physics has created a World-Wide Web site that recounts the scientist's life through historical accounts, photographs, sound clips, and documents. The site tells Einstein's story from his childhood, when he excelled in science and mathematics, to the later years of his life, which he spent in pursuit of the "unified theory" that would tie together the science of subatomic particles with that of gravity and motion. The site provides links to current research projects to provide further information about the unified theory and other aspects of Einstein's work.

Ph.D. work with T. Kinoshita: evaluation of the sixth-order corrections to the electron magnetic moment . At the time it was perhaps the most demanding numerical computation in theoretical physics, and remained QED's most precise theoretical prediction for a number of years. We developed a new perturbative expansion for the electron magnetic moment and new effective methods for dealing with Feynman diagram infrared divergences For me the conceptually most striking lesson of this long calculation were the amazing cancellations induced by gauge invariance . The desire to understand and exploit gauge invariance more effectively has motivated much of my subsequent research. The most interesting results of this effort were the mass-shell QCD Ward identities and the construction of the QCD gauge sets . This work motivated the formulation of planar field theory , rediscovered in 1994 by M.A. Douglas, D.J. Gross and R. Gopakumar, D.V. Voiculescu and others. Other papers in this series are those on the QCD mass-shell infrared singularities and the diagram counting , both attempts to formulate gauge-invariant models computable to high orders, in order to investigate the nature of gauge-invariance induced cancellations.

General References It turns out that an eerie type of chaos can lurk just behind a facade of order - and yet, deep inside the chaos lurks an even eerier type of order - Douglas Hofstadter. I realize that it is difficult and frustrating when one tries to tackle a new subject, especially one as multifaceted and cross-disciplinary as the field of chaotic dynamics. I know; I was there once - awed by the immensity and complexity of the subject. Heck, I am still there, wide-eyed and all! In any case, I hope the following list of books will help you on your way to being enlightened. Feel free to email me any worthwhile additions and/or corrections at lpoon@chaos.umd.edu Help! I try to keep up with the influx of new books, but I can't do it by myself. After several requests for inclusion of more specialized texts, I have hit upon a possible solution. Instead of trying to keep up with all the new chaos books, I welcome submissions from people who feel strongly and positively about any particular book. I would appreciate it if the submission includes a short review that points out the various aspects of the book (eg. good points, bad points, intended audience, etc.) Submissions in the more specialized areas are especially welcome. I can't promise to accept all submissions, but if I do, I will give the proper acknowledgments. Direct your submissions to lpoon@chaos.umd.edu

Clas Blomberg; Research interest, General description.
"Statistical Physics" is a branch of physics that studies the connections between various levels of descriptions of the physical world. Objects such as we see them are composed by a large number of atoms, and we want to understand how these influence general properties. For that, we need not know the atomic details but use a statistical picture , based upon atomic features. This makes it possible to understand and describe various properties, in particular those that are related to temperature and temperature changes. For example, one can understand why there occur various phases such as gases, liquids and solids with sharp transitions between them. In this field, I work with applications to the processes of living systems, what can be called biological physics or simply physics of life. The basic processes that govern the phenomenon of life are the same as those that govern "dead matter" and they are based on the same general laws of physics. The aim for me and my group are to apply a physical view for biological objects and processes in living organisms. Particular questions concern the understanding the functions of the large macromolecules , proteins and nucleic acids (DNA) that govern all living properties. Determining factors for such functions are the structures of the macromolecules and the possibilities to change structure under the influence of various chemical compounds or external factors such as light.
