The life of Giovanni da Verrazano
by Ryan I am writing about Giovanni da Verrazano. My explorer was born in 1485. He also was born in Italy. In 1524, he was commissioned by the king of France. He wanted new lands for France and to search for a western sea passage to China. In 1524, he was commissioned by King Francis. I claim new land for a western sea passage to China. He also got killed and eaten by the native of Americans. The Narrow Verrazano Bridge is named after him. He seems to have landed on the coast of present day North Carolina. John Cabot
by Chris I am writing about an Italian explorer named John Cabot. John was born in 1450 in Genoa, Italy. Little is known about him as a boy. We do know he wanted to be a sailor when he was young. In 1497, he sailed for the first time for the king of England. He sailed to North America and landed in Cape Brenton. He also sailed the second time to the New Foundland. We should remember him because he discovered New Foundland. Also he sailed for England to North America. Giovanni Da Verrazano
by Carina Giovanni Da Verrazano was born in about the year of 1485 and died about the year of 1527. He was born in Italy, but we do not know much about his early life. We do know more about his mid and late life.

SAMUEL DE CHAMPLAIN Samuel de Champlain was a French explorer and navigator who mapped much of northeastern North America and started a settlement in Quebec. Champlain also discovered lake Champlain that was named after himself (1609). Champlain was important in establishing and administering the French colonies in "The New World", called New France. "For many years I had been eager to explore the rivers, lakes, and streams of the interior. I had the hope of getting to know the country and of bringing the people (natives) to a knowledge of the one true God"
To make the St. Lawrence a safe trading route and to protect the new colony at Quebec, Champlain supported the Huron and Algonkian Indians against their rival enemies, the Iroquois. FACTFILE : Champlain was an excellent navigator and mapmaker. From a single point in a bay he could draw an accurate map of the shoreline. Some of his maps are good enough for sailors to use today. SAMUEL DE CHAMPLAIN
"New France" is what Canada was called when I first explored it. The natives knew the land, but I was the first European to explore New France and draw maps that showed where the largest rivers and lakes were. We traveled on water most of the time during our explorations.
We went from France in the spring of 1604 on ships that crossed the Atlantic Ocean. We landed in Newfoundland and then to St. Croix island where Canada and Main have a boundary. St. Croix Island was beautiful in the spring. We built an oven building, a blacksmith shop, a little chapel, and a cemetery.
I went to France with my friend, Pontgrave, on an expedition led by a friend of King Henry IV of France, whose name was Pierre da Gua, Sierre de Monts. We just called him de Monts. We hoped to find great riches to send back to France. We even thought we might discover a trade route to China. De Monts had a ten year monopoly on the fur trade in New France that was granted to him by the King. This made him the only one who had the right to take the furs from New France.
We explored the eastern coast of New France (Canada) and even went south of Canada into Boston Harbor. After our terrible winter on St. Croix Island, when almost half of the crew died, we went to Acadia and founded Port Royal. A few years later, my friend Pontgrave and I took a journey up the St. Lawrence River where we discovered the perfect place for a city. Its soaring cliffs were a perfect spot to place cannons to protect the city from attack by ships. This way we could protect the settlers and the soldiers. We founded Quebec in the summer of 1608.

    Morison, Samuel Eliot.
Samuel de Champlain, Father of New France . Toronto and Boston: Little, Brown and Co., 1972. Morison explains how Champlain was also an artist and illustrator, a military engineer and designer, a mapmaker and cartographer, and a skilful writer whose Voyages are a rich source of Canadian history. His Treatise on Seamanship, printed in this book, is a practical handbook of navigation for that time. This book prints many of his illustrations. Exploration and colonizing activity required courage, leadership and dedication. Morison depicts Champlain as one of the most remarkable explorers of world history, arguably the most important in Canada's early and subsequent history. This book is based on an excellent knowledge of the literature of exploration, of early Canadian history, and of the waters and rivers of North America as appreciated by a sailor-historian.
