What Kind of Lizard Is That?
Q: When visiting relatives in Florida, we found several small lizards that live in their backyard. These lizards changed color to match the environment. I kept calling them chameleons because of this fact, but the relatives called them door lizards. What were they? George A: Ah, the great lizard question. Well, George, I have never heard of door lizards, but the term may be a regionalized common name for one of the lizards found in Florida. According to my field guides, there are several species that have the ability to change color to blend in with their surroundings, which some animals can do to make themselves less noticeable to predators. When it comes to lizards in Florida, it's mainly anoles and geckos which are mostly not native to Florida that have this ability. True chameleons aren't found in Florida, according my field guides, unless they are escaped pets. Do you have a question? Contact the editor

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary © 1994 by Merriam-Webster, Incorporated The family Chamaeleonidae contains 120 to 150 known species. These Old World lizards are easily recognizable as a group. They are all adapted for living arboreal with pincher-like toes that allows for gripping branches and stems. They have sharp vision through conical shaped mounds of skin around independently moving eyes. Almost all of the species have prehensile tails. Chameleons are insectivores and will capture their prey at great distances by zapping the unsuspecting insect with their sticky tongue. It is truly amazing to watch these animals catch their prey, they are incredibly accurate and fast with their tongues, which can extend up to two feet. To many observers, the most spectacular thing about a Chameleon is their ability to change colors. What many people do not realize is that many species actually have poor color changing ability. People also tend to think that the only reason a Chameleon will change its color is to blend with its environment. While the former is true, it is the least likely reason for the color change, more often the color change is due to mood changes or to communicate. When the Chameleon is calm and in a state of rest, it will be muted shades of green, brown, tan and white that blend with their surroundings. When they become excited, happy, fearful, angry, sexually stimulated their colors will become most vivid and extreme.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Chamaeleons Scientific classification Scientific classification refers to how biologists group and categorize extinct and living species of organisms. Modern classification has its roots in the system of Carolus Linnaeus, who grouped species according to shared physical characteristics. These groupings have been revised since Linnaeus to improve consistency with the Darwinian principle of common descent. Molecular systematics, which uses Genomic DNA analysis has driven many recent revisions and is likely to continue to do so. Scientific classification belongs to the science of taxonomy or biological systematics.

Typically, they are multicellular in composition and capable of both locomotion and responding to their surroundings. Unlike plants, animals do not photosynthesize, instead consuming plants or other organisms to grow and sustain themselves. Most animals have a body plan that becomes fixed as they mature and, except in animals that metamorphose, is established early in their development from embryos. The scientific study of animals is called zoology.

Geographic Range
Border between Yemen and Saudi Arabia: The veiled chameleon occupies high, dry plateaus and is found near the border of Yemen and Saudi Arabia along the foot of the escarpment and local wadis (inland river valley), to an elevation of almost 3,000 feet. Biogeographic Regions: palearctic native
Habitat
Veiled chameleons are arboreal lizards, meaning they prefer to live high up in trees or lower near the ground in bushes and shrubs. They can live in dry areas and are found on plateaus of mountainous regions, forests and valleys of southern Saudi Arabia and Yemen. They are one of the few species of chameleons which can tolerate wide temperate ranges, though they prefer to live in a temperature range of 75 to 95 degrees F. Terrestrial Biomes: desert or dune mountains
Physical Description
The veiled chameleon is characterized as an aggressive, brightly colored chameleon. They have a casque found on top of their heads, which is a tiny swelling when a hatchling, but grows to two inches in height. They typically have bold bands circling their body primarily of bright gold, green and blue mixed with yellow, orange or black. They also have very long cones on their gular crest. There is sexual dimorphism.

ABSTRACT -Ingestion of fireflies of the genus Photinus (Lampyridae) can be lethal to Australian lizards of the genus Pogona (Agamidae), probably because of the poisonous steroidal pyrones (lucibufagins) that these fireflies contain. One Photinus may suffice to kill a Pogona. Captive Pogona kept as pets need to be shielded from firefly ingestion. African chameleons (Chamaeleo; Chamaeleonidae) appear also to be vulnerable to Photinus toxicosis. KEYWORDS Pogona Chamaeleo Photinus /lucibufagins/ cardiotonic agents/pet industry
* To whom correspondence should be addressed. Fireflies of the genus Photinus are poisonous. Their bodies contain lucibufagins (Eisner et al. 1978), steroidal pyrones related structurally to such well-known toxins as the bufodienolides of toads and the cardenolides of plants (Fieser and Fieser, 1949; Budavari et al., 1989) (Fig. 1). Not surprisingly, the lucibufagins protect Photinus against predation. Spiders (

Horrie The Wog-Dog by Ion L Idriess 21. The Wog-Dog In Danger "WHAT on earth are you doing now?" growled Sergeant Poppa one day. "Introducing you to Cuthbert Mark I," grinned Fitz. Cuthbert Mark I was a queer chameleon lizard about six inches long. The weird crawlers looked like miniature prehistoric reptiles. Quaintly, one eye would sometimes look ahead while the other gazed astern. Each foot appeared to be a claw more suitable for tree-climbing than waddling across the desert. They moved in a slow, hesitating manner, placing one foot forward then lurching backwards and forwards before dragging up the other leg. "Can't make up his mind," grinned Fitz as I held Horrie while Cuthbert Mark I did his stuff across the tent floor. He had a slick tongue as long as his body; he flicked it out and rolled it back like a youngster's "squeaker". He was an expert shot at flies, whether on the wing or as sitting shots. The tongue would flick out and with the same movement recoil back into the large mouth. Cuthbert Mark I would then squat solemn and motionless and lick his chops. There appeared to be a hard sticky substance on the end of the tongue and when this touched a fly it was hopelessly bogged. "Just as well Murchie isn't here," sighed Poppa. "What with his craze for scorpions and lizards and beetles and asps, the army is turning into a menagerie."

Computer Model May Identify Conservation Hot Spots Hillary Mayell

January 20, 2004 What do long-dead animals, satellite technology, and biologists counting lizards have in common? Together they may be able to help predict population distributions of animals threatened with extinction. This is particularly important as the rate of habitat loss accelerates in regions where very little data is available. "Before you can really conserve a species one of the fundamental pieces of information you need to know is where they occur," said Christopher Raxworthy, associate curator of vertebrate zoology at the American Museum of Natural History. "It's amazing just how poor our understanding of species distribution in some areas is. This is particularly true in the tropics which are both poorly studied and contain the greatest number of species." Read the full Parson's chameleons ( Chamaeleo parsonii ) are found only in Madagascar. They live primarily in trees, rarely touching ground. Chameleons can change color to regulate body temperature, to communicate with other chameleons, and to camouflage themselves against predators. Chameleons also have prehensile tails and eyeballs that can move independently of one another. Many chameleon species are threatened because of habit loss and fragmentation and by illegal exports for the pet trade.
