RSS advertising response
Lots of responses to our decision to put ads in our RSS feeds. We truly appreciate all the feedback, positive and negative. Some of the comments were fair and balanced and some of the comments and insinuations out there are basically incorrect or at least misleading (I'll point those out below). A useful and productive interchange between Phil Windley and Jenny Levine on the topic. One note of clarification for the discussion in Jenny's post, she links the words " Obviously, InfoWorld sees this differently " to a quote from the AdWeek Technology Marketing story on our decision. Just wanted to point out that those are not actually

Attributes the following views to Baudrillard: the existence of objects is a cultural myth; the separartion between signs and reality is literally a science fiction; the reality referred to by a sign is only an effect of signification; referents, real objects, belong to lived experience; obejctivity is a matter of consesnus; objects are symbolic and are consitituted as commodities by signs; it is meaning as a system of communication that presides over social exchanges; the theory of these symbolic exchanges constitutes the political economy of the sign.

Nagoya International School, Japan For those currently teaching an EFL discussion or cultural studies course, the following unit is one way to engage university or adult students in a meaningful exchange which explores cultural values. While many textbooks do deal with culture and cultural values, supplementing these texts can create a richer experience. One way to do this is to invite international students to the classroom to participate in a forum. Inviting these speakers allows for a truer voicing of cultural values that does not solely rely on textbook and teacher interpretations. In addition, all participants have the opportunity to learn how cultural values are affected by factors such as religion, nationality, socio-economic status, and personality. As Brown (1994) suggests everyone must recognize, understand, and respect groups and cultures as unique before coming to the conclusion that people are all the same underneath.
Background
A key element of this mini-unit is to make use of a valuable resource which is often readily available but not utilized by EFL educators. From our experience in Canada and Japan, students who are studying an additional or foreign language are especially open to sharing their values and time. Therefore, teachers can begin by contacting local universities in their countries that have special exchange or language programs for international students. Surprisingly, many international students comment that they have few opportunities to meet and interact with adults or university students of the host country. Thus, there is an opportunity to enrich classroom discussion and foster international contacts amongst these two groups of learners.

Chad Ohlandt: Engineering in Taiwan
Remember cartoon rockets blasting off to the moon on cheese-gathering missions? Did you grow up hooked on the "Star Wars" space operas, picturing yourself as swashbuckling Han Solo? Meet engineer Chad Ohlandt, currently seeking a supporting role in the future blockbuster, "Journey to the Red Planet." GO After Chad's early exposure to intergalactic pop culture turned into a passion for space exploration, he began accumulating the technical know-how to devise new ways to power rockets. While learning Mandarin and traveling in Taiwan and China for a year, he added another life goal: bringing the Chinese on board an international mission to Mars. Chad Ohlandt has long dreamed of being involved in space travel and helping to plan a manned mission to Mars. Chad's proposed recipe for becoming a space mission planner: mix his engineering studies with world travel and language acquisition. He knows the qualifications for his dream job will include global project management skills and the ability to collaborate with colleagues around the world. So far, this straightforward desire has met with heavy resistance from the English-centric American universities where Chad has been pursuing his engineering education.

Chad With one of the most painful histories in Africa, Chad is a nation with its foundations built on the precipice of conflict. A harsh climate, geographic remoteness, poor resource endowment and lack of infrastructure have combined to create a weak economy suceptible to political turmoil. The country that was classified in the 80s as the poorest nation on earth is usually generously described as 'developing', and while there is a degree of stability and modernisation occurring in Chad, 'surviving' is probably a more apt term. The cities are still interesting and relatively safe places to visit for the careful traveller - nightlife in the capital is thriving with many popular bars - but visitors should always stick to main routes and keep a low profile. Intrepid travellers are currently able to visit the capitals of ancient desert kingdoms and other attractions in the country. Amnesty International decries the continued use of torture and executions by the government and various rebel armies, but - if it makes you feel better - these atrocities rarely affect travellers. Full country name: Republic of Chad Area: 1.28 million sq km

BRAND NEW SHOW UP JUN 1ST 2004
NEW SHOW PAST SHOW THE VISION FOR HOLY CULTURE RADIO We at Holy Culture Radio stand firmly on these "three" principles in regards to the Hip-Hop we play.
2... It is in Christ that we have freedom, and freedom can be FUN.. However, in that freedom comes responsibility. Therefore.. 3... We realize not all artists that get rotation on Holy Culture Radio are, in our eyes, "balanced" in regards to the content of their music. But WE as Dj's have a responsibility to give the listener a well balanced earful - so to speak. So.. there IS room in our rotation for the serious, the light-hearted, the "in ya grill", and sometimes even the subliminal.

A View Changed By The Changing Time (Commentary to Story of Khon Chad Taa Wog Magog Haeng) If this had been twenty years ago, I probably would have read " " [Story of Khon Chad Taa Wog Magog Haeng] by Por Ui Chan Audtorkan with little interest. After all, it’s just a folklore with no grains of truth to it. Not to mention the language is neither beautiful nor sophisticated, full of misspellings and fails to meet the grammatical standards of the Thai language. Yet, time has changed. I have grown from a high school student to a field researcher, traveling through local open markets, villages, in search of the elderly for stories, which, I hope, will weave for me a picture of the past and a skeleton of the present Not surprisingly, I was elated when Por Ui Chan handed me two sheets of paper when I stopped by his mother-in-law's house to pay her and her daughter (Por Ui Chan's wife) respect for the upcoming Songkran/local new year. On one sheet of paper from Por Ui Chan is a story entitled " " (Story of Khon Chad Taa Wog Magog Haeng). He asked me to correct his misspellings. Mae Ui Kaew, his dear wife, commented that she had seen him spend a great amount of time writing that piece; he copied it time and again and complained about having headaches from writing because it is not one of his routine activities.

It would be a world of unheard of prosperity, economic growth, and cultural advancement. Prof. chad Nagle. comments on this article?
http://www.antiwar.com/nagle/nagle-col.html
February 17, 2003 The New Leninism I have a dream. The Lenin Mausoleum in Moscow’s Red Square has been purchased by an American foundation and carefully moved to Washington to take its place among the monuments of the nation’s capital. It has been situated in the center of the reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial, and special stone walkways have been constructed to rise from the bottom of the pond and provide access by foot for state dignitaries on special occasions, such as the anniversary of the revolutionary leader’s birth on April 22 nd , when wreaths are laid and solemn tribute is paid. The vision of US Secretary of War Donald Rumsfeld and a long line of international statesmen all standing before the red constructivist edifice, heads bowed and hands on heart, is the picture that captures the true essence of historian Francis Fukuyama’s "end of history." WHAT LENINISM MEANS H istorians have generally associated Lenin nee Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, with Communism, because
