Prayer Profile
The Hausa of Chad The Republic of Chad is a large, thinly populated country in north-central Africa. It has a population of more than six million; 127,00 of which are Hausa. They are the largest ethnic group in West Africa, and a majority of them are Muslims. The Hausa are originally from an area known as "Hausaland," a region covering 75,000 square miles and straddling the borders of Niger and Nigeria. The Hausa have migrated to Chad during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. From 1900 until 1960, Chad was under French rule. Independence was gained in 1960; however, civil war and political conflict have divided the country along religious and ethnic lines. Because of the continuing civil war and the lack of economic resources, Chad has become one of the least developed nations in the world. What are their lives like?
Since the beginning of the nineteenth century, Hausaland Muslim pilgrims traveled through Chad and Sudan on their way to Mecca, Saudi Arabia (the "holy city" of Islam). Due to the long distance and lack of transportation, the pilgrimage could last for several years. The temptation to settle in one of the towns along the route was often overwhelming. Thus, many never reached Mecca, but settled in Chad. Every Hausa man born in Chad commonly says, "We are pilgrims." Even those who have been settled in Chad for three or more generations cling to this ideal. They use it to explain the distinctness of the Hausa culture. As a result, the non-Hausa population has regarded them with both scorn and respect; scorn for their willingness to do menial tasks, and respect for their devotion to Islam and their trade-oriented society.

Country Information on Chad Terrain
Climate
Chad may be divided into three climatic zones. The northern region is characterized by hot and arid climatic conditions and is almost entirely rainless. The central region has a hot season from March to July, a wet season from May to November with precipitation averaging 250 to 750 mm, and a dry and cold season from September to April. In the country's south precipitation averages 1,145 mm from July to September. Fauna/Flora
For the most part, the country is characterized by savannah vegetation with typical shrubs and pastureland. The southern part of the country is the most fertile region in Chad and it effectively feeds the whole country. The south is also the region where most of the country's fauna can be found, including elephants, rhinoceroses, giraffes, ostriches, lions, and buffaloes. Lake Chad region abounds in bird life, whereas the desert region provides a suitable habitat for a number of reptile species. History/Politics
The area around Lake Chad has been inhabited since at least BC 500. In the 8th century AD, Berbers began migrating to the area and established a tribal confederation that laid the foundation for the emergence of the Kingdom of Kanem in the 9th century. The Kingdom of Kanem had adopted Islam by the year 1085 and was to dominate the region right up to the 19th century. Although Chad became a French dominion according to the Berlin Conference Act, the French occupied the area as late as 1900 after defeating Sudanese conqueror Rabih al-Zubayr who ruled the area from 1883 to 1893.

If that subject line catches your fancy, if you fall for quirky little portugese brunettes that wander off into blizzards, then check out Maria de Medeiros in Saddest Music in the World . She does a great job of acting, or is really a total freak, managing to convey that it is pointless to worry about her (Bruce Willis described her as "this little tulip in hell" after filming some film about pulp magazines with her). She also played Anais Nin in . Isabella Rossellini is more famous in the US, more blonde in this film, but de Medeiros steals the show.

Hee hee... it was seriously sweet and wonderful. After the second time I met Sara I was complaining that nobody up here in Detroit makes proper sopapillas, and she told me she knew how. I'm not sure if she offered to make them for me when I came down to Austin, or I begged until she agreed, but I flew down to see

About Woodstock News Programs Publications
"From Ireland to Chad: The Ambiguities of Globalization,"
published in National Jesuit News By William Bole If you were going through the exercise of picking two small or mid-sized countries with opposite experiences of globalization, you would hardly do worse than to come up with Ireland and the central African nation of Chad. The "Irish tiger" has lifted even those at the bottom rungs of its roaring economy. Chad is rated as the fifth-poorest nation in the world, afflicted by global markets and monetary policies (not to mention the internal demons of corruption and violence). Yet when viewed outside the usual prism of economic winners and losers, the two countries may seem less far apart, in their encounters with globalization. Both are showing how the global economy, even while holding out promise, could rupture a people’s sense of tradition and identity. In Ireland, the challenge comes from affluence and a global media culture. In Chad, it comes in the shape of a World Bank-supported oil pipeline that will run through ancestral lands. Ireland and Chad were among several countries highlighted in an October 16-20 (2000) gathering of Jesuits from 15 social research and action centers on five continents. They came together for a consultation of the Global Economy and Cultures Project, sponsored by the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University. The four-year project pulls together a few dozen Jesuit centers worldwide. Participating groups are compiling narratives about the effects of economic globalization on local cultures.

PopTech - Chad Hollister
Chad Hollister wasn't an official part of PopTech . I met him in a bar where he was playing music, and I wound up talking to him at length about lots of stuff. Mostly music stuff, though. He started out as a percussionist and was influenced by people like Santana. It didn't take much to prompt me to buy his latest CD, which is entitled simply enough "Life." Really great stuff! Highly recommended. Chad lives in Burlington, Vermont and has played with, or opened for, a lot of well known bands (Phish, Tom Petty, Blues Traveller, the Spin Doctors etc.). He has a really nice website where you can find MP3 samples of his songs and learn about him and where he is touring (mostly Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut). Check him out if you can, and buy his CDs if you like his music. Not only is he a great musician, but he is helluva nice guy.
