Who We Are About Us Contact Us What We do Artwork Media Gallery What It Means Meaning Materials Cultures Introduction Introduction to Chadian Culture and Art Chad is located on the southern edge of the Sahara, below Libya and adjacent to the Sudan. When most people think of the Sahara, they conjure up an image of a dry, hot, and inhospitable desert. This was not always the case, and the area once had a climate more conducive to human habitation. In addition to leaving behind stone tools, bracelets, beads, and shards of pottery, the inhabitants of the Sahara have, over thousands of years, also left behind rock art in the form of pictographs Flora and Fauna Adapted to Arid Climate Chad is host to a variety of animals and plants, and was even more so in the past. Current animals include antelope, gazelles, leopards, monkeys, ostriches, panthers, and wild sheep. Despite being dry, the region has a number of locust trees and other vegetation, most of it growing during when the rains come. Animals in Chad are migratory, following the rains to new sources of temporary pastures. Humans Have Migratory Lifestyle The human inhabitants of Chad were, and still are, of necessity, migratory. After domesticating sheep and cattle, they grazed large herds on the pastures which spring up after the rains, since sedentary agriculture has always been impossible given the climate. Over a period of time, camels replaced sheep and cows as the preferred animal for the arid climate. This change was reflected in the rock art.

Ndjamena - Culture Chad with capital N'DJAMENA is bordered by the Central African Republic on the south, Sudan on the east, Libya on the north, and Cameroon, Niger, and Nigeria on the west. Ndjamena is the capital and largest city. Administratively, there are 14 prefectures. The terrain in the south is wooded savanna; it becomes brush country near Lake Chad. The only important rivers are the Chari and the Logone, both of which flow into Lake Chad and are used for irrigation and seasonal navigation. Northern Chad is part of the Sahara Desert; areas of the mountainous Tibesti region there are 11,000 ft (3,353 m) high. The country has no railroads and few all-weather roads, although funds from the United Nations have been put toward the development of the road system. The country comprises two distinct, and often hostile, population groupings. In the politically dominant south, where the bulk of the population is concentrated, live sedentary agricultural peoples, including the Sara, Massa, Ngambaye, and Moudang; most are Christians, but some follow traditional religions. In the north are seminomadic and nomadic Muslim peoples, including Arabs, Tuareg, Hadjerai, Fulbe, and Toubou. French and Arabic are the official languages, but it is estimated that more than 100 languages and dialects are spoken throughout Chad. Click To Go Back

SUMMARY
The Abraham A. Schwadron "Chad Gadya" Collection consists of manuscript materials and sound recordings compiled by Abraham Schwadron, professor of music at UCLA, as part of his ten-year research on "Chad Gadya" ("One Kid"), a Jewish folksong related to the Passover holiday. The research combines historical and ethnographic perspectives, and includes field documentation as well as bibliographic and discographic materials. It contains recordings and transcriptions of hundreds of versions of "Chad Gadya" from Jewish communities around the world. The materials were donated to the Archive by Schwadron's family in 1988. Collection materials date from 1973 to 1985. The manuscript material includes correspondence, Schwadron's writings, informant information, background research, and musical and textural transcriptions. The sound recordings include more than 160 versions of the song.

Chad/Cameroon Oil Exploitation By Rachel Naba
As modern technology grows, our need to consume natural resources increases. As existing resources are exploited and drained, the need for new resources becomes somewhat of an emergency. New lands are tested and surveyed, and any country that is found to have exploitable resources becomes very interesting to foreign governments and companies. Chad, a "poor" African country, has discovered oil in its lands, and foreign oil companies have seized the opportunity to exploit it. A Consortium consisting of Exxon, Shell and Elf have formed a 3.5 billion dollar oil project to collect, manage, and sell Chad's oil. They will build 300 oil wells in three fields in the Doba Basin of Southern Chad and transport it through 1070 kilometers (663 miles) of pipeline through Cameroon to the Atlantic Ocean for export. The pipeline will disturb the Deng Deng forest (semideciduous) and the Atlantic Littoral Forest (a tropical rainforest which is one of the most undisturbed in the world), will cross major rivers, bother wild and plant life, affect the ecosystem and health of the land, and disturb indigenous people, their lives and their farmlands. Oil spills or accidents will be devastating. The World Bank will financially support the "Chad Export Project". Chad and Cameroon have applied for over $115 million in loans (for equity investments, which do not necessarily guarantee profits), and the pipeline companies created for the project depend on the bank's support. Profits for the two host countries estimate at $1.3 billion (not even half of the project's total construction costs!) over the twenty-five to thirty year life-span of the project, and will be revenue from royalties, taxes, and transportation fees. The bulk of the profit will benefit the foreign oil companies.

60. CULTURAL REVOLUTIONS By Chad McCracken
Unlike the bulk of their benighted American countrymen, they know that culture is a harmless and sophisticated entertainment, save when it chad McCracken.
http://www.chroniclesmagazine.org/Chronicles/December2001/1201McCracken.htm
From the December 2001 issue of Chronicles CULTURAL REVOLUTIONS AFTER SEPTEMBER 11, voices from many quarters have urged Americans to reflect on the reasons for the widespread hatred that the United States endures abroad. This is doubtless good advice: Such historical reflection is always worthwhile, and the pressing need for it is amplified in times of trouble. But whether these voices genuinely seek historical reflection (as opposed to thoughtless ideological applause) is an open question. This assumption is historically and politically inept, and more a cause of anti-American feeling than an analysis of it. But what, precisely, is "anti-American feeling"? The specific grievances on the lists of anti-Americans around the world vary from year to year and from region to region, but the rhetorical melody of anti-Americanism remains fairly constant across many contexts. The old tune has not changed much since the end of World War II, perhaps not since the annexation of Hawaii, or even, in a way, since Fort Sumter. It goes something like this: The United States is arrogant, powerful, self-righteous, and naive.
