21. Web Publishing - CGI Scripts - Intro
There are all sorts of free cgi scripts on the web. Back in the early days, NCSA bundled a famously insecure cgi program along with it s web server.

1. Introduction
CGI Scripts Normal web pages are static files. You create the file in HTML, put it on disk, and every time a browser fetches the file, it always gets the same file. This is simple and it gets the job done. However, sometimes static files are not enough. Sometimes you want the returned page to depend on a form that the user submitted. Or perhaps you want to record the information from the form in a disk file. Instead of serving a static file, you want the web server to run a program and feed the result of this program back to the web browser. Such a program is called a CGI program or CGI script. (CGI is Common Gateway Interface, if you must know. The name is meaningless. And although the difference between "script" and "program" can spark religious wars among geeks, I'll use the terms interchangeably.) The ACCC now allows general users to run CGI scripts, at least on an experimental basis.

22. Web Publishing - CGI Scripts - Background
Output is simpler. The cgi script just writes to STDOUT and the web server makes sure this is sent back to the browser. Some caveats, though.

2. Background
Web Server What is a web server? Just a program that listens for incoming connections. When a connection is made, the browser sends the web server a message using HyperText Transport Protocol (HTTP). The web server will interpret the message to figure out what was requested, send a return message, and then close the connection. In particular, HTTP is stateless. This means that each connection and single exchange of messages is independent; when the server answers a connection, there is no intrinsic memory that a previous connection was made. Every click on every link is a separate connection. Normally, the web server receives a message to fetch an HTML file. Simple enough, the server reads the appropriate file from disk, wraps a little HTTP around it, and sends it back to the browser. The process is the same if a GIF or JPEG or other kind of file is requested; the only difference is that the web server uses HTTP to specify what kind of file is being returned. Technically, the browser does not know what kind of file it is requesting, but it does know what kind of file is returned because the HTTP tells it. Files are classified by MIME type. For example

In planning its own Web site, CAST researchers wrestled with the idea of how to make the entire Web more universally designed, i.e., more accessible and useful to all people, including those with disabilities. CAST examined existing Web accessibility guidelines, recognized the improbability of Web developers sitting down and reading a handbook of guidelines, and wanted to create an online tool Web designers could use to easily implement those guidelines."

HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is a simple markup system used to create hypertext documents that are portable from one platform to another. HTML documents are SGML documents with generic semantics that are appropriate for representing information from a wide range of applications. HTML markup can represent hypertext news, mail, documentation, and hypermedia; menus of options; database query results; simple structured documents with in-lined graphics; and hypertext views of existing bodies of information. HTML has been in use by the World-Wide Web (WWW) global information initiative since 1990. The HTML 3.0 specification provides a number of new features, and is broadly backwards compatible with HTML 2.0. It is defined as an application of International Standard ISO ISO8879:1986 Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML). This specificiation will be proposed as the Internet Media Type (RFC 1590) and MIME Content Type (RFC 1521) called "text/html; version=3.0".

Ebooks Self-Publishing Your Way to Internet Success Part 3 Ebook Formats (HTML)
    By Shelley Lowery
In part 2 of this series, we focused on ebooks formatted in PDF. We will now continue with HTML compiled ebooks.
    Hypertext Markup Language Format (HTML)
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) formatted ebooks are simply a group of web pages compressed into one .exe file for distribution. HTML ebooks are completely interactive with the Internet and can be as simple or dynamic as you'd like. Your HTML files can contain live links, graphics, forms, JavaScript, embedded video, and more. You can easily create a dynamic presentation utilizing the latest technology.
Ebooks formatted in HTML are basically designed just like website. They can contain an unlimited number of pages that are navigated via hyperlinks. Unlike ebooks formatted in PDF, the design of an HTML ebook is only limited by your imagination.

Ebooks Self-Publishing Your Way to Internet Success Part 7 Accepting Payment
    By Shelley Lowery
Once you've completed your ebook and have taken the necessary steps to protect your work, your next step will be to set up an online payment system.
Don't let this process intimidate you, as it is much easier than you may think. There are many professional companies on the Internet that will assist you. If you'd like to get your own merchant account, you can do so right online. If you'd rather not have your own merchant account, there are companies online that will process your orders for you.
    Merchant Accounts
If you decide to get your own merchant account, you will also need access to a secure server and a shopping cart system. A secure server will protect your customers information. A shopping cart system will provide your customer with a running total of what they have ordered and the total cost.
