Introduction
The National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program , administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), helps low-income, uninsured, and underserved women gain access to lifesaving screening programs for early detection of breast and cervical cancers. Many deaths from breast and cervical cancers could be avoided by increasing cancer screening rates among women at risk. Deaths from these diseases occur disproportionately among women who are uninsured or underinsured. Mammography and Papanicolaou (Pap) tests are underused by women who have less than a high school education, are older, live below the poverty level, or are members of certain racial and ethnic minority groups.

What is cervical cancer?
Cancer is a disease in which certain body cells don't function right, divide very fast, and produce too much tissue that forms a tumor. Cervical cancer is cancer in the cervix, the lower, narrow part of the uterus (womb). The uterus is the hollow, pear-shaped organ where a baby grows during a woman's pregnancy. The cervix forms a canal that opens into the vagina (birth canal), which leads to the outside of the body.
Why should I be concerned about cervical cancer?
Cervical cancer is a disease that can be very serious. However, it is a disease that you can help prevent. Cervical cancer occurs when normal cells in the cervix change into cancer cells. This normally takes several years to happen, but it can also happen in a very short period of time. The good news is that there are ways to help prevent cervical cancer. By getting regular Pap tests and pelvic exams, your health care provider can find and treat the changing cells before they turn into cancer.

Welcome to the Irish Cervical Screening Programme Website This is Phase 1 of a National Cervical Screening Programme, which offers free cervical screening to women aged 25-60 years in the Mid-Western Health Board (MWHB) area. Women aged 25-60 years in the MWHB area are invited to Register with the Programme. The ICSP aims to ensure that women on the Register will be invited over a 5 year screening period, by letter to attend for a free cervical smear test. Women who have registered with the Programme can wait until they are sent a letter advising when to make an appointment for a free smear test with an ICSP Registered Smeartaker of their choice.
    Or
Women who have never had a Programme smear can contact one of the ICSP Registered Smeartakers (Doctors and Nurses) to discuss having a free smear test. Cervical Screening is a worthwhile preventative health measure. Smear tests can detect early changes in the neck of the womb; the earlier a change is found the easier it is to treat.

In 1997 the American Social Health Association entered into a five-year cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control ( CDC ) and Prevention to develop a national model to increase Pap-testing and follow-up among low-income African American and Hispanic women. We identified the communities of Durham and Chatham Counties in North Carolina as pilot sites for developing a replicable model for reaching under-served women in both urban and rural settings. We hope that the project will serve as a model for replication for other local and national organizations.
Project objectives included: assessing patient's and provider's knowledge, attitudes and behaviors regarding the prevention, detection and control of cervical cancer; and, identifying cultural and communication barriers to timely and adequate gynecological health care. By increasing awareness about sexual health issues and cervical cancer prevention the project also sought to increase Pap-testing and follow-up among high-risk women in the pilot geographic areas. Another objective was to improve the quality of health care provider counseling and education surrounding the prevention of cervical cancer and the psychological issues related to diagnosis and treatment.

    39. A High Resolution Ultrasonic Imaging System For The Detection Of Cervical Cancer
    Maurits van der Heiden

    Next: Introduction
A High Resolution Ultrasonic Imaging System for the Detection of Cervical Cancer
    Abstract:
A digital scanning system for the ultrasonic detection of cervical cancer has been developed. The acoustic transducer is a high frequency (30 MHZ) wide band single element PVDF transducer. Pulse-echo traces are recorded at up to 2048 angular positions at a speed of 16 revolutions per second. The high frequency signals are continuously digitized at 200 Msamples/s with a resolution of 10 bits. A processing unit converts the data into a high resolution 'radial' image in real-time and stores the digitized RF-data for further processing. The scanner supports two modi, a real-time search mode and an off-line characterization mode. The first mode is to obtain a basic impression of the cervix. After selection of a region of interest, the second mode uses seismic processing tools for image enhancement and tissue characterization. In this mode use is being made of residual focussing to obtain a high depth-independent resolution and the resulting high resolution image is analyzed by linear Radon transformation for angle dependent information.

... Treatment Decision Tools Detailed Guide: Cervical Cancer What Is Cervical Cancer? The cervix is the lower part of the womb (uterus). The uterus has two parts. The upper part, called the body of the uterus, is where the baby grows. The cervix, in the lower part, connects the body of the uterus to the vagina, or birth canal. Cancer of the cervix (also called "cervical cancer") begins in the lining of the cervix. This cancer does not form suddenly. First, some cells begin to change from normal to pre-cancer and then to cancer. This can take a number of years, although sometimes it happens more quickly. These changes are referred to by several terms, including dysplasia . For some women, these changes may go away without any treatment. More often, they need to be treated to keep them from changing into true cancers. There are two main types of cancer of the cervix. About 80% to 90% are squamous cell carcinomas . The other 10%-20% are adenocarcinomas . If the cancer has features of both types it is called mixed carcinoma . If you have cervical cancer, ask your doctor to explain exactly what type of cancer you have.
