Types of Cerebral Palsy

What is Cerebral Palsy? Cerebral Palsy is a term used to describe a set of chronic disorders that impair the brain's ability to adequately control movement and posture. This disruption in the brain’s ability to adequately control movement and posture is caused by faulty development or damage to the motor areas in the brain. By definition, Cerebral Palsy refers to the brain’s two halves (cerebral) and, to any disorder involving the impairment of control of bodily movement (palsy). Generally, there are four types of Cerebral palsy: Spastic cerebral palsy Athetoid (or dyskinetic cerebral palsy Ataxic cerebral palsy , and mixed forms . Common causes of cerebral palsy are breech presentation, complicated labor or delivery, low birthweight, nervous system malformations, maternal bleeding or severe proteinuria, maternal hyperthyroidism, seizures in the newborn and doctor errors. Symptoms may include difficuty breathing, low birthweight, delayed development and mental retardation.

Maternal Infection and Cerebral Palsy
CHICAGO (Reuter) - The risk of developing cerebral palsy rose nine-fold in babies of normal birth weight who were exposed to infection in their mothers' wombs, a study said Tuesday. Judith Grether of the California Birth Defects Monitoring Program and Karin Nelson of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke studied 424 babies born in Northern California from 1983 to 1985, 46 of whom suffered from disabling spastic cerebral palsy. ``Maternal fever exceeding 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 Fahrenheit) in labor was associated with a 9.3-fold increase in the risk of unexplained spastic cerebral palsy, as was a clinical diagnosis of chorioamnionitis,'' they wrote in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Chorioamnionitis is an infection involving the membrane surrounding the fetus, the amniotic sac and amniotic fluid. ``One or more indicators of maternal infection, placental or other, during the admission for delivery were noted in 22 percent of children with unexplained cerebral palsy,'' the researchers wrote. Previous research had associated maternal or placental infection with an increased risk of cerebral palsy in low birth weight infants, but not among normal birth weight babies who represent about half of all cases.

Our Mission
"To ensure individuals with cerebral palsy the right to appropriate opportunities to achieve their fullest potential through education, health care and access to all amenities of the community."
Who We Are
  • The Saskatchewan Cerebral Palsy Association (SCPA) began in 1985 as a group of concerned parents who were frustrated by the lack of services available for individuals with cerebral palsy (CP).
  • From this small core the Association organized and expanded. We now have a growing membership of families and individuals including parents, adults with CP, therapists, medical professionals, teachers and interested persons. The SCPA is a voluntary charitable organization. Our Board of Directors is composed of volunteers. We have seven elected officers and various Directors-at-Large, chosen by the Board for their expertise in health care, education, etc. The Fundraising Coordinator and Office Coordinator administer daily operations. The SCPA cooperates with other provincial CP Association across Canada and many other related organizations at the local, provincial and national level.

Cerebral Palsy is a disorder caused by injury to the motor areas in the brain, affecting muscle tone and the ability to control movement and posture. In most cases, the onset occurs during pregnancy or at childbirth. In other cases, infections such as meningitis or traumatic brain injury may result in cerebral palsy. There are three types of movement disturbances associated with cerebral palsy:
  • Spastic cerebral palsy, where muscles are tense, contracted, and resistant to movement. This is the most common form of cerebral palsy, especially in low birth weight or premature babies. Athetoid cerebral palsy, where the affected parts of the body perform involuntary writhing movements, such as turning, twisting, facial grimacing, and drooling. This form of cerebral palsy generally involves damage only to the motor centers, not to other parts of the brain. In the past the "strange" and "unnatural" movements were diagnosed as signs of mental or emotional disturbance. Ataxic cerebral palsy, where the main characteristic is lack of balance and coordination and altered depth perception, due to damage to the cerebellum. Ataxia involves difficulty maintaining balance and swaying when standing.
  • Sometimes several areas of the brain are involved, so the description of a particular child's condition may involve several of the above terms and symptoms. Also, the severity of the disability will vary from child to child, ranging from mild awkwardness to inability to walk. Other conditions associated with cerebral palsy may include: seizures, ADHD, learning disabilities, vision problems and speech impairment.

Scraping the Surface is an autobiographical one-man show, written and performed as a monologue by Canadian playwright/performer Lyle Victor Albert "Vic." Vic shares his experiences as a teenager with cerebral palsy. For Vic, the seemingly simple act of shaving becomes a turning point in accepting his cerebral palsy and pushing himself and his physical abilities. The challenge of shaving propels Vic to explore growing pains common to teenagers: parents, high school, and decisions about life after high school. "To shave...or not to shave..." Doesn't seem like a life-altering dilemma. But for Vic, "shaving isn't just a function of good personal grooming...it's an adventure." Because Vic is no ordinary guy...Vic is "jumpy." With great skill and good humor, Scraping the Surface leads us into the world of a young man with cerebral palsy as he wrestles with the age old problem of "what to do with the rest of my life." Join performer/playwright Lyle Victor Albert in this hilarious personal account of the challenges and victories that are part and parcel of the process of stepping into adulthood and discovering both who we are and who we would like to be.

    What is Cerebral Palsy?
Cerebral Palsy is a group of disorders characterized by loss of movement or loss of other nerve functions. The disorders are caused by injuries to the brain that occur during fetal development or near the time of birth. Infants born premature have a slightly higher incidence of cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy may also occur during early infancy as a result of cerebral injury caused by illnesses (encephalitis, meningitis herpes simplex infections , and so on), head injury that results in subdural hematoma, blood vessel injuries, and many others. What Causes Cerebral Palsy? Cerebral palsy results from injury to the cerebrum. The cerebrum is the largest portion of the brain and is involved with higher mental faculties, sensations, and voluntary muscle activities. Symptoms? There are many symptoms and not everyone will experience all of the symptoms. Symptoms are usually apparent before age 2 and in severe cases may appear as early as three months. The symptoms include: seizures, muscle contractions, difficulty sucking or feeding, irregular breathing, delayed development of motor skills, such as reaching, sitting, rolling, crawling, walking, motormental retardation, mental retardation, speech abnormalities (dysarthria), visual abnormalities , hearing abnormalities, spasticity, progressive joint contractures, limited range of motion and peg teeth
