QUICK LINKS Home page Archaeology Arts and Crafts Civilizations Cultures First Peoples History Treasures Military history Artifact catalogue Library catalogue Other Web sites Boutique Well before Europeans reached this continent, Native peoples in many parts of Canada had mastered the art of producing durable, functional, and beautiful ceramic containers. The manufacture of ceramic containers requires an intricate knowledge of a complex technology. Pottery-making is foremost an understanding of material properties and the control of their modification through the application of heat. The earliest ceramics in Canada were made in the northern Yukon more than 3,500 years ago, within sight of the Arctic Ocean. That Siberian-inspired Palaeoeskimo pottery tradition, however, did not spread to more southern regions. The origins of the Aboriginal earthenware industry found south of Canada’s Arctic regions can be traced to the culturally rich lands draining into the valley of the Mississippi River. More than 2,500 years ago, ceramic pots appeared at many locations in southern Canada and gave rise to a number of distinct regional traditions. Ceramics were only one component in a much larger pulse of cultural influence emanating from the North American heartland. Ceramic pots served many purposes, but the most important was surely the preparation and cooking of food. As they were drawn to the warm fire of a hearth, people would regularly gather around the pot to share not only food, but also stories and information, laughter and sorrow. If only these pots could speak, what stories they would tell!

http://www.artukraine.com/trypillian/trypil.htm
"Trypillian Ceramics and Pottery " Trypillian World...It existed from the first half of the fifth century until the last quarter of the fourth millennium B.C. Now, on the territory of Ukraine, there are approximately 2,000 known Trypillian settlements and sepulchral mounds. The term "Trypillian" takes its name from the Neolithic people who lived in the area of Ukraine from 5,000 to 2,500 B.C. The most typical object found in the remains of Trypillian villages is handmade pottery, the crafting and ornamentation of which was at an advanced level. The powerful Trypillian design was of three colors: usually white and black against a red clay background. To the Trypillians, the pattern of spiraling and whirling meander, signified eternity and the cycle of life. Custom made Trypillian style ceramics and Hutsul style pottery are being crafted today by Myron and Marika Bokalo in the United States. Each piece is individually crafted by the two artists who create their own distinctive designs, incorporating the richness of shapes, patterns and colors of ancient Trypillia.

Wood fired, saggar fired and side fired ceramics. Site includes online gallery and directions to studio in Goshen, Indiana.
    http://www.dicklehman.com
WELCOME to my pottery web site, and thank you for your interest in handmade contemporary ceramics. This web site features a gallery of the best of my wood-fired, saggar-fired, and side-fired clay art, all available for purchase. And to say a bit about my techniques: I produce wood-fire stoneware and porcelain pottery that I fire in a small anagama style kiln here in Goshen, Indiana, United States. I also craft wheel thrown porcelain for my innovative saggar-fire pottery, that produces 'fast fossil' images in the clay. Additionally, I create side-fire stoneware and porcelain pottery that is influenced both by Japanese ceramic art and contemporary American pottery traditions. I hope you'll revisit the website often.
