Rachel Sieder , editor. Central America: Fragile Transition . New York, St. Martin's Press, 1996. xviii + 298 pp. Tables, notes, bibliography, index, and map. $65.00 (cloth), ISBN 0-312-16010-0. Reviewed for H-Teachpol by Derwin S. Munroe , Northwestern University. Published by H-Teachpol (June, 1997) The final two chapters (by Laurence Whitehead on the role of international actors, particularly the US, and by Stephen Baranyi on the role of the UN) add a needed international dimension to the national focus of the previous chapters. Whitehead provides a discussion driven by comparisons and counterfactuals, and thus contributes the best of the essays in the volume. He also discusses Central American developments through the lens of the workings of the US domestic political system, and thereby successfully fuses domestic-international and regional-global dimensions. The H-Teachpol book review editor is Patrick O'Neil.

Construction materials, pots, agricultural tools, and bags of food labeled with FRG propaganda began to appear across the countryside. In San Marcos three children were crushed to death in a mob fighting over political gifts distributed by local FRG officials. General hints for birding in South and Central America
    (in http://johnbirding.wolweb.nl
Er is ook een Nederlandse versie (in Word). Over the years, several people asked me questions after reading trip reports on this web site. Most questions were about the general logistics of the birding. Below I have put together a lot of these hints. All are based on our personal experiences, and naturally I am not taking any responsibility for them. I did not do any special research for writing this chapter, and in fact this text should be regarded as supplementary to especially Nigel Wheatley - Where to watch birds in South America, and to the travel guides like from Lonely Planet and Footprint. Why birding in South (and Central) America?
One third of all bird species of the world occurs in South America, and this is related to an enormous general biodiversity. The life zones are different both from N to S, from W to E and from low to high elevation. E.g. there are about seven clearly different life zones in the Andes, whereas the Alps have only three or so. Moreover, there is a lot, really a lot of nature left in South America.

    Before European Contact
Most of modern Central America was part of the Mesoamerican cultural area in Pre-Columbian times. The Native American civilizations of Mesoamerica extended from central Mexico down to Costa Rica. The Precolumbian cultures of Panama traded both with Mesoamerica and the cultures of South America , and can be considered transitional between the two cultural areas.
    Spanish Colonial Era
After the Spanish Conquest in the 16th century , most of the region now known as Central America shared a common history. The exceptions were the two nations at the north and south ends of Central America. Panama was part of Spanish New Granada , and then of the nation of Colombia , until Belize was the British colony of British Honduras until From the 16th century to the early 19th century Central America was part of the Spanish Viceroyalty of New Spain , administered by the Captain General's administration in Antigua Guatemala and later Guatemala City . The area was sometimes called "The Kingdom of Guatemala", and included
