Although Central America (including Belize Costa Rica El Salvador Guatemala Honduras Nicaragua , and Panama ) has limited energy resources, it is important to world energy markets as a transit center for oil (via the Panama Canal), and as a potential energy transit center between North and South America. Note: This information is latest available as of September 2003, and can change. BACKGROUND
After spending most of the early 1990s recovering from authoritarian rule or civil wars in Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Panama, the Central American countries have begun efforts to improve their economies and cooperation through regional integration. Central American integration first began in 1951, when the Organization of Central American States (ODECA) was founded. The creations of the Central American Common Market, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and the Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration followed in 1960. In 1973, ODECA was suspended and the integration process stalled. In 1993, a new integration program, the Central American Integration System (SICA), materialized and reinstated the integration process.

This documentary captures in detail the struggles of the Mohawk people against the federal and provincial governments, the Canadian army, and the stone throwing rioters that the Surete du Quebec were unable to control. 1992. 105 min. CENTRAL AMERICA 2 MAXIMILIANO HERNANDEZ MARTINEZ
    General of El Salvador

"It is a greater crime to kill an ant than a man," said General Maximiliano Hernandez Martinez, a firm believer in the occult "for when a man dies he becomes reincamated, while an ant dies forever." The official records of Hernandez Martinez's anti-communist purge of 1932 were removed from EI Salvador's National Library, but the massacres, which left 40,000 peasants dead and wiped out the country's Indian culture, remain etched on the nation's collective memory.
A failed uprising organized by EI Salvador's Communist Party founder, Farabundo Marti, six weeks after Hernandez Martinez had seized power in a 1931 coup, sparked the General's crackdown on "communists." "Roadways and drainage ditches were littered with bodies," writes Raymond Bonner. "Hotels were raided; individuals with blond hair were dragged out and killed as suspected Russians. Men were tied thumb to thumb, then executed, tumbling into mass graves they had first been forced to dig." U.S. warships were stationed off-shore, ready to send in Marines to aid the General in case he ran into serious opposition.
Hernandez Martinez was run out of the country in 1944, but his memory was celebrated as recently as 1980, when the Maximiliano Hernandez Martinez Brigade carried out a series of death-squad assassinations of prominent Salvadoran leftists. Farabundo Marti, killed during the purge, has also left a legacy: the rebels currently fighting the U.S. backed government of El Salvador call themselves the FMLN, the Farabundo Marti Liberation Front.

Population Density: 74.6 per sq km.
    Capital: San José. Population
GEOGRAPHY: Costa Rica, lying between Nicaragua and Panama, is a complete coast-to-coast segment of the Central American isthmus. Its width ranges from 119km to 282km (74 to 176 miles). A low thin line of hills, that rises between Lake Nicaragua and the Pacific Ocean in Nicaragua, broadens and rises as it enters northern Costa Rica, eventually forming the high, rugged, mountains of volcanic origin in the centre and south. The highest peak is Chirripó Grande which reaches 3820m (12,530ft). More than half the population live on the Meseta Central, a plateau with an equitable climate. It is rimmed to the southwest by the Cordillera range, and provides the setting for the country’s capital, San José. There are lowlands on both coastlines, mainly swampy on the Caribbean coast, with grassland savannah on the Pacific side merging into mangrove towards the south. Rivers cut through the mountains, flowing down to both the Caribbean and the Pacific.
Government: Republic. Gained independence from Spain in 1821.
