Fourth Symposium on Aquaculture in Central America
Tegucigalpa, Honduras
April 22-34, 1997 June 27, 1996: George Chamberlain, immediate past president of the World Aquaculture Society and current director of aquaculture for Ralston Purina International, reports: After three successful meetings, The Central American Shrimp Farming Symposium has changed its name, gained new sponsorship and announced its next meeting. The name of the conference has been changed to The Symposium on Aquaculture in Central America. Since it follows the First, Second and Third Central American Shrimp Farming Symposiums, the next conference will be called the Fourth Symposium on Aquaculture in Central America. The first three conferences were sponsored by the National Aquaculture Association of Honduras (ANDAH) and the Honduras Federation of Agricultural and Agroindustrial Producers and Exporters. In 1997, ANDAH will team up with the new Latin American Chapter of the World Aquaculture Society (WAS), and the Society's Home Office will assist with the program, proceedings and arrangements. This will be the first major activity of the Society's Latin American Chapter, which is strong in the Caribbean and parts of South America, especially among tilapia farmers. Mark your calendar! The Fourth Symposium on Aquaculture in Central America is scheduled for April 22-24, 1997. It will focus on shrimp, tilapia and shrimp/tilapia polyculture! In 1995, shrimp farmers in Guatemala and Honduras discovered that shrimp/tilapia polyculture reduced the incidence of Taura syndrome on some shrimp farms. Suddenly, shrimp farmers everywhere in the western hemisphere were polyculturing shrimp and tilapia. The Fourth Symposium on Aquaculture in Central America provides the first opportunity for the industry to discuss its results.

Unearthing Evidence of a Caribbean massacre
The Los Angeles Times, [21 August 1997]
ON A REMOTE tip of the Dominican Republic, researchers believe they have discovered the site of one of the most brutal and bloody massacres of Indians by Spanish conquistadores. The battle is well documented in Spanish texts, but the discovery of the remains of the settlement provides the first archeological documentation of the episode and of the peace-loving Taino people who lived there. Details of the expedition were revealed recently at a meeting of the Society for California Archeology in Rohnert Park, near Santa Rosa, Calif. This is the most important archeological discovery in the Caribbean in the last twenty-five to fifty years, said Pedro Morales, head of East National Park, where the city was discovered. Only 11 years after Columbus discovered the New World, a Spanish army led by legendary explorer Ponce de Leon and others destroyed the unnamed Taino settlement, slaughtering as many as 7,000 residents. The barbaric incident was one of the first in a 50-year period of conquest in which disease and slaughter wiped out the Taino population of more than 1 million on the island of Hispaniola. Exploring the dense forest around a sinkhole so isolated that it could be reached only by mule trains or helicopters, the archeology team discovered four large ceremonial plazas and the remains of a city that once may have held tens of thousands of people.

    http://www.belizenet.com/kittys/kittyspla.htm
Kitty's Place Belize is a small English-speaking country nestled on the Central American coast of the Caribbean Sea. Entering into its second decade of independence, Belize is an excellent example of a young, peaceful democracy. Belize is noted for its natural beauty: unspoiled rivers and rainforests, abundant wildlife, countless Mayan archeological sites, and the world's second largest barrier reef. The Placencia peninsula in southern Belize offers miles of natural beach, numerous coral-encrusted cayes, a rich mangrove lagoon and road access from the mainland, making the area an ideal base for exploring both the Caribbean Sea and the Belizean jungle. Kitty's Place is a secluded beach resort located on the peninsula, 1.5 miles north of the Creole village of Placencia, 2 miles south of the Garifuna village of Seine Bight and a short walk from the local airstrip. This small Belizean resort is owned and operated by Kitty Fox and Ran Villanueva. The resort accommodations are built of tropical hardwoods in the Caribbean style. The resort has a full-service restaurant and bar, a well-stocked gift shop and a large selection of activities. Snorkeling . An experience that should not be missed! Each of our cayes has its own unique coral garden, with a reef life so bountiful that even a non-swimmer can enjoy the wonders of our underwater world! Our licensed local guides will swim with you to help identify our abundant marine wildlife.
