Central African Republic - History Prior to French colonisation many tribes fled to the area in order to escape the slave trade. In 1910 the area (known as Ubangi-Chari) became incorporated into French Equatorial Africa. Self-government was achieved in 1958 and full independence in 1960, although the country is still effectively controlled by France. The country was badly damaged by the disastrous rule of the self-styled 'Emperor' Bokassa, whose coronation in 1977 is estimated to have used up over a quarter of the country's annual income. He was deposed in 1979, and the country once again became a republic. (He returned unexpectedly from exile in 1986 and was immediately imprisoned). Subsequent leaders - David Dacko followed André Kolingba, who proved unable to alleviate the country's deep-rooted problems - being underdeveloped, poverty-stricken and corrupt. Kolingba led the sole legal political party at the time, Rassemblement Démocratique Centrafricain (RDC). The death sentence delivered at his trial was commuted in February 1988 to 20 years imprisonment. However, within a few years, as democracy swept through Francophone Africa, violent domestic protests and heavy French pressure forced Kolingba to concede the introduction of a multi-party system. After several delays and interruptions, caused by Kolingba's efforts to thwart results of which he did not approve, Ange-Félix Patassé was inaugurated as president in October 1993. A former minister under Bokassa with at least one later coup attempt (in 1982) to his name, Patassé was the leader of the long-standing opposition movement, the

The Baya people, seeking refuge from the Fulani of northern Cameroon, arrived in what is now the Central African Republic in the early 19th cent.; the Banda, fleeing the Muslim Arab slave raiders of Sudan, came later in the century. French expeditions, pushing out from the Congo, made treaties with local tribal chiefs and occupied the area in 1887. The region was organized in 1894 as the colony of Ubangi-Shari and was united administratively with Chad in 1906 and incorporated into French Equatorial Africa in 1910. Chad later became a separate French territory. Much of the region was leased to French concessionaires, whose fostering of forced labor and other abuses sparked rebellions in 1928, 1935, and 1946. The population of Ubangi-Shari actively supported the Free French forces during World War II. In 1946 the colony was given its own territorial assembly and representation in the French parliament.
