CIA World Factbook Entry Deep in the heart of the continent, the Central African Republic was part of French Equatorial Africa before independence in 1960. The economy, moribund by 1979 when self-proclaimed Emperor Bokassa's 14-year reign of terror ended, remains in very poor condition. Large stands of timber hold promise, and surveys suggest extensive mineral wealth, although diamonds and gold are the only minerals being actively exploited. In 1996-97, violence between the government and rebel military groups has exacerbated the nation's fragile economic state. Text source: National Geographic Atlas of the World, Seventh Edition, Area
