Ambassador Sharpless
Serving as the Ambassador to the Central African Republic (CAR) is both very challenging and rewarding. The Mission plays a critical role in strengthening the political, economic, diplomatic, and cultural relations between the United States and the CAR. We work to promote democracy, good governance, respect of human rights, economic development, and health and education programs, and to encourage the CAR Government's cooperation in the fight against terrorism. With program assistance of some $500,000 annually, we provide training for CAR military officials, educational scholarships for girls, training of judicial and court officials and assistance for numerous economic developmental self-help projects throughout the country. Though our assistance funds are very small, these programs and projects make a substantial difference in the livelihood of the Central Africans, who earns on average just over $300 per year. In reaching out to all levels of the Central African Republic, I have traveled to many areas of the country and visited schools, churches, and businesses. My highest priorities are aimed at assisting in raising the level of education, especially for girls, helping to combat the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and working to re-establish the Peace Corps in the CAR.

The territory lies in the very centre of the African continent, north of Zaire and to the west of Sudan. It was formerly a French colony, known as Ubangi-Shari. It became independent in 1960 and for a time called itself the Central African Empire, under Emperor Bukassa I. The southern part of the country abuts the equatorial rain forest. Towards the north it is predominantly moist savannah. The Central African Republic remains poorly developed but its mineral deposits include diamonds, iron, tin and chromium. The people practise mostly a subsistence form of agriculture, but cash crops include rubber, cotton and coffee. Unlike the majority of African states, the country comprises people who share the same ethnic and linguistic roots. They are thought to have occupied the area at least since the last millennium BCE. The actual definition of music is hotly contested; one definition of music may include only those sounds which are considered "pleasant" by the definer, while another may include any sound produced intentionally by an individual or a group. Other definitions may focus on defining music as a physical phenomenon (in terms of sound), as a psychological phenomenon, or as a social phenomenon. Some people have even disputed that there is any such thing as music at all! Thus music must contain physical, psychological, and social phenomena, including theory, performance practice, dance, and poetry.

Central Africa
One of the world's secrets is the diversity, beauty and friendliness of the Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad and Congo. Ethnically, culturally and geographically it is one of Africa's most diverse regions. More than two-hundred ethnic groups live across its lush tropical coastal forests, cool volcanic plateaus and graceful arid grasslands. The broad range of climate and environment generates an equally wide variety of economic activities and cultural styles. Many areas are noted for the refinement of their traditional government, social structure, rituals, and arts and crafts. It has been said that if you can't visit the entire African continent you can visit Cameroon and see a sample of it all. Programs may also visit Central African Republic, Chad, Gabon and Congo. The preferred season is October-December.
CAMEROON BY BICYCLE
The International Bicycle Fund schedules a series of two two-week, people-to- people, bicycle/train program in Cameroon . One program visits the north of the country and the second explores the southwest. A special feature of the program is the opportunity to meet people. The northern program twists up semi-arid valleys of traditional villages and ends amidst the geological wonders and wildlife areas of north. You make stops to watch craftsmen create brass castings, baskets and textiles and to shop at colorful weekly village markets. The southwestern itinerary passes the base of 14,000 foot Mt. Cameroon, climbs through hills to the dramatic ring-road of the verdant western Bamileke highlands and historic town of Foumban. In route we stop to visit tea and coffee estates, traditional farms and observe to the traditional court of the Fon of the Bafoum.
