Home International trade in reptiles booms
New report examines the US connection International trade in live reptiles has increased dramatically in the last decade, with the USA as the central player. The trade supplies a number of markets, from food to aquariums and zoos, but by far the most significant market is for live reptiles as pets. In the USA, imports significantly declined after the passage of laws such as the US Endangered Species Act in the 1970s. However, in the last 10 years, the USA has seen an enormous increase in live reptile imports and has become a major supplier as well. Today, the USA accounts for 82 per cent of the reported international trade in live reptiles covered under CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, according to a new study by TRAFFIC North America. The study, published in the report The US Role in the International Live Reptile Trade: Amazon Tree Boas to Zululand Dwarf Chameleons by Craig Hoover, analyzed global trade data and reviewed trade in approximately 100 species, many covered under CITES.

    NEWS:
13 June 1997 MORE COMPREHENSIVE INTERNATIONAL TRADE CONTROLS NEEDED FOR BIG-LEAFED MAHOGANY
    Harare, Zimbabwe
Current international trade controls for Big-leafed Mahogany are not enough to ensure adequate monitoring and regulation of the trade, according to a new report by TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring programme of WWF-World Wide Fund for Nature and IUCN-The World Conservation Union. The report's release comes only a few days before member countries of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) will discuss a controversial proposal for stricter international control of trade in Big-leafed Mahogany at their meeting in Harare, Zimbabwe. Big-leafed Mahogany is in demand for high end furniture and panelling, especially in the USA and UK. Its range extends from southern Mexico through South and Central America to Bolivia and Brazil, and through large portions of the Amazon Basin. Population declines are evident in Bolivia, Brazil and Peru, the world's major exporters, as well as in Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, Costa Rica, Panama and Ecuador. In 1995, Big-leafed Mahogany was listed in Appendix III of CITES, thereby requiring all shipments of timber from this species in Central and South America to be accompanied by documents verifying its origin. The report, which analyses the implementation of Appendix III, shows that countries have taken important steps to implement the listing, but some trade of Big-leafed Mahogany continues without appropriate documentation.

International Trade Whopping increase in 1999 deficit
It was obvious all through 1999 that the U.S. deficit in trade in goods would set a new record high for the fifth consecutive year – and it did. The $330.1 billion deficit beat the previous year’s record of $229.8 billion by $100 billion, or 44 percent. Manufactured goods contributed more than $80 billion of the increase; automotive trade (vehicles and parts) alone accounted for one third of that jump. The higher U.S. oil bill was responsible for most of the increase in the deficit in non-manufactured goods. Developed countries led the way
Already-large deficits with developed countries grew dramatically in 1999. The U.S. deficit with Canada almost doubled from $16.7 billion in 1998 to $32.1 billion last year, while the imbalance with the European Union rose by 60 percent to $43.7 billion. The deficit with Japan, the biggest for any country, jumped an additional $10 billion to $73.9 billion. These three trading partners were responsible for 45 percent of the overall U.S. deficit in 1999 and just about half the 1998-1999 increase. China, Mexico not far behind

The Europe and Western Hemisphere (EWH) division of the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs' Bilateral Trade Affairs (BTA) office, in close coordination with the relevant geographic bureaus in the Department of State and other U.S. Government agencies, develops and implements trade policy with respect to South and Central America, the Caribbean Mexico, Canada , and Europe (including the former Soviet Union). The division represents the State Department in interagency meetings and bilateral negotiations on trade issues involving these regions. EWH also has functional responsibilities including aviation, aerospace, and defense trade. North America Canada and Mexico are the United States' top two trading partners. In 2002, U.S. two-way merchandise trade with them amounted to about one-third of all U.S. international trade. In 1993 the U.S., Canada, and Mexico signed the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), eliminating most tariffs. U.S. merchandise exports to NAFTA partners more than doubled between 1993 and 2002, from $127 billion to $258 billion, significantly higher than the 49% growth of U.S. exports to the rest of the world. CAFTA: Golden Opportunity for Central America How can the nations of Central America improve their economic lot? Increasing the flow of goods and services and reducing prices is one important step toward progress. Read one Costa Rican's analysis here. Hernando De Soto: Targeted By Peruvian Terrorists Attacked in the early 1990s by terrorists for advocating economic freedom for Peru's poor, Hernando de Soto now works with governments in the developing world to eliminate regulations and barriers to enterpreneurship. Former President Bill Clinton has praised de Soto's work to help the poor obtain legal property rights so that they can then use that property as collateral to secure micro-loans. Juan Benitez: Taking Success Global Enterprise Development International and the Grameen Bank grant microloans to the poor in developing countries so that they can start businesses. Benitez, a Cuban emigree to the United States, says "the poor around the world, have a great degree of self respect, dignity, and a strong desire to succeed. They need a little bit of a helping hand, a little bit of nurturing to get them started, but they don't want handouts. They are looking for a chance to suceed." Microloans give them that chance.

Thousands of export industries, distributors, purchasing organizations, service providers, freight forwarders, etc., from virtually every industrialized nation in the world have established headquarters for the Americas, Latin America and the Caribbean in Greater Miami. The increasing number of corporations that have located their Latin American headquarters in Greater Miami, have found that marketing, sales, distribution, service and operations in Central and South America and the Caribbean, can be managed in a more efficient manner from Greater Miami than from any other locations in North and South America. Miami is "neutral territory". Executives from all parts of Latin America visit Southeast Florida regularly to meet with customers and suppliers, to perform banking transactions, etc. Consequently, Miami has become a place where deals are made, closed and reconciled. Time Magazine proclaimed Miami the "Hong Kong of Latin America". In Miami, Latin cultures and traditions blend with North American efficiency and business, making this a truly unique international community.
