Dr. Cecil L. "Chip" Murray Dr. Murray’s drive and passion to serve was evident early in his life. As he matured, he served 10 years of active duty on flying status with the United States Air Force as a Jet Radar Intercept Officer (Air Defense Command), and a navigator (Air Transport Command). He was decorated with the Soldier’s Medal of Valor in 1958 following an aircraft explosion in his two-seated fighter. He retired as a reserve Major with the United States Air Force. The members of Dr. Murray’s family begin with his devoted wife, Bermardine, and their one son, Drew David Murray, enrolled of Fuller Theological Seminary. In 1977 Dr. Murray was assigned to First African Methodist Episcopal Church, the oldest black church in Los Angeles. His new church family had 300 active members in 1977. They received his vision to set a fire in the hearts of his members to be a church that extends beyond the walls. The fire and spirit of love spread, and the congregation grew to 17,300 members. The ministry of the church fills the sanctuary with an awe-inspiring spiritual worship service and spills beyond the walls of the church with some 40 task forces that include health, substance abuse, homelessness, emergency food and clothing, general and specialized housing, tutoring, entrepreneurial training, employment services and the like.

A+ [...] It embodies a rich set of functions and operators, a modern graphical user interface with many widgets and automatic synchronization of widgets and variables, asynchronous execution of functions associated with variables and events, dynamic loading of user compiled subroutines, and many other features. Execution is by a rather efficient interpreter. A+ was created at Morgan Stanley. Primarily used in a computationally-intensive business environment, many critical applications written in A+ have withstood the demands of real world developers over many years. Written in an interpreted language, A+ applications tend to be portable. A+: a programming language for actual programmers

I think that need not be as horrible as in Cecil when one doesn't use
multi-methods for everything. ... not sure whether it's so difficult to
come up with a reasonable scheme for method placement etc. in the
common cases.

It's just another unknown. For the proverbial "general numeric classes" that few people write <wink>, it's clear that, e.g., if the rational class came first, then when adding a complex class the mixed complex/ rational cases "should go" with the latter, then when adding a matrix class the mixed complex/matrix and complex/rational cases should go with the matrix code, etc. In the absence of practical experience, though, I'm inclined to take Chambers at his word that idiomatic MM usage isn't so easy to lay out on a flat piece of paper. In Cecil the "argument specializers" are also annotations on methods' formal argument lists, so that the machinery for setting up MM dispatch is easy to spell and attached directly to method definitions; Python would need at least 3 kinds of other extensions to make it that clear (i.e., a type system suitable for MM dispatch; a way to spell type literals; and arglist declaration annotations).
This is again with a very different expectation about speed than any-
one using Python today might even dream of. ...

In this update of the 1993 edition, C. Mercer (U. of Florida) and A. Mercer (educational diagnostician, Gainesville) help prepare educational staff in both special and general education to meet the challenges of individualized programming for students with learning or behavioral problems. This iteration contains updated information on educational materials and expanded coverage of selected topics: e.g. collaboration, cultural diversity, successful transition practices, and other aspects of creating responsive learning environments globally and for specific subject areas. Outreach Programs Project CAN (Community Arts in Neighborhoods) is an after-school program sponsored by the Cecil County Arts Council in the local HotSpots-designated Fletchwood community. The program includes two sessions: Mural Painting for ages 11-14 and Graphic Design for ages 14-18. The mural group displays its finished works at the Arts Council and in the County Courthouse, before the works find a permanent home in the Fletchwood community. The Graphic Design group is producing a community newsletter, "In the Swing of Things," to be printed and distributed in the Fletchwood community.

Introduction
This site is a mindful artifact that illustrates some of the readings and discussions of the material presented in the Proseminar I course relating to Design. The professor for this part of the course was Dr. Diane McGrath at Kansas State University in the fall of 2003. My approach in creating this artifact was as follows: In building the mindful artifact I choose to use exemplification and explanation (Perkins, 1992). I picked five different topics from the readings that were appealing to me. In order to show my understanding I tried to pick examples from my teaching and research background that illustrated the topics. Where appropriate, I added explanation. Below are my five examples.
  • Building Upon Knowledge of Others Five Facets of a Learning Environment Designing To Learn Whose Curriculum is this Anyway? ... References
  • Building Upon Knowledge of Others
toc In the article by Brown, 2000 one of the points made is that learning on the web is constantly evolving. This reminded me of a very popular strategy used by intelligent software that mimics this type of cognition, i.e. Case Based Reasoning . The image below is a model of how CBR systems are built around reminding's and how a computer solves problems using this strategy. The CBR Cycle consists of:
    • RETRIEVE the most similar case or cases REUSE the information and knowledge in that case to solve the problem REVISE the proposed solution RETAIN the parts of this experience likely to be useful for future problem solving

One way of placing it in the "space of languages" is to say that it aims to be as efficient as C, C++, or Fortran, as elegant as and safer than Eiffel, and support higher-order functions and iteration abstraction as well as Common Lisp, CLU or Scheme. RELATED WORK
Reducing the cost of indirect function calls generated by a C++ compiler is addressed by Calder and Grunwald [ ], and Pande and Ryder [ ]. Similar optimization goals have been studied for the languages SELF [ ] and Cecil [ ]. In contrast to our work, which attempts to reuse optimizations already implemented as part of the compiler, previous techniques perform new analyses. The C++ techniques are complimentary. In particular, the technique of Pande and Ryder may be useful in providing heuristics that estimate the best approach for optimizing a given virtual function call. Calder and Grunwald investigated using branch prediction to reduce the cost of indirect function calls. Branch prediction attempts to predict the direction taken by a branch instruction based on previous executions of the same branch instruction. This optimization can be done in software [ ] or in hardware [ ]. Calder and Grunwald focus on two techniques: the first is a 2-bit branch target buffer (a small cache which records the direction that the branch last took). The second uses static profile-driven prediction, which stores information on the directions that branches took in a previous execution of the program. In subsequent compilations this profile information is used to predict branch directions. Their results indicate that the first method tends to be very expensive while the second holds some promise. Pande and Ryder investigated type determination at the call site to statically choose the correct virtual function [
