But it was the turtle that continued to bring sailors to this region. To stave off scurvy, ships sailed to the island, then slaughtered and salted the turtles. People in the News Cayman Islands Represented at the Tampa Tarpon Tournament Winner of the DOT/CAL booth raffle Marti Cox with Mike Emmanuel and Nikki McCoy, (Right) Chris McCoy of the Cayman Islands (presently one of many students studying in the Tampa Bay area) with tournament organizer Mike Emmanuel. Representatives from the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism teamed up with Cayman Airways to represent the destination in Tampa, Florida at the Tampa Tarpon Tournament June 6-8, 2002. The tournament which was hosted out of the Tampa Bayside Marina (an exclusive state-of-the-art facility) for boat storage and service is in its second year. Originally an idea proposed by concerned residents of the Tampa Bay area in conjunction with the University of Tampa's marine biology programme, the tournament is a celebration of the rejuvenation of the Tampa Bay. Tampa tarpon Tournament Organizer Mike Emmanuel, President of the University of Tampa Ronald Vaughn, Dot's Nikki McCoy and winner Greg Quisenberry (1st in the Flyfishing division) Once a renowned fishing ground for tarpon and other fish life, the Bay's waters had become so polluted that fish life was scarcely found. With years of efforts toward preservation and conservation measures being implemented the marine life is returning and tarpon are fished on "catch & release" basis.
