Cayman History Cayman Brac and Little Cayman were spotted by Christopher Columbus during his last journey to the New World on May 10, 1503. Actually on his way from Panama to Hispaniola (now home of the Dominican Republic and Haiti), Columbus was blown off course, a detour that allowed him to sight the Sister Islands. He called these islands "Las Tortugas" after the many sea turtles he found there. In his notes, the explorer wrote " ...we were in sight of two very small islands, full of tortoises, as was the sea about, inasmuch as they looked like little rocks." Later maps referred to the islands as Lagartos, probably a reference to the large lizards (possibly iguanas) seen on the island. Later, the name became Caymanas from the Carib Indian word for caymans, the marine crocodile. On a 1585 voyage, Sir Francis Drake reported sighting "great serpents called Caymanas, large like lizards, which are edible." A few years later, a French map showed Cayman Brac with crocodiles in its waters, along with a manuscript that described the reptiles. No modern residents had ever seen the toothy lizards, but in 1993 an archeological dig on Grand Cayman (and three years later on Cayman Brac) proved the existence of the crocodiles. But it was the turtle that continued to bring sailors to this region. To stave off scurvy, ships sailed to the island, then slaughtered and salted the turtles. For years, the isles served only as a pit stop on these maritime runs.

Lying on the trade routes between the Old and New Worlds, Jamaica served variously for centuries as a way station for Spanish galleons, a market for slaves and goods from many countries, and a prize for the Spaniards, the British, buccaneers, and entrepreneurs. By far the largest of the English-speaking islands in size and population, independent Jamaica has played a leading role within the Commonwealth Caribbean and has been active in international organizations. SEARCH History Sea-going trade RBC Royal Bank of Canada's history in the Caribbean goes back a long way. In fact, the bank established branches in the Caribbean before some of Canada's western provinces. Strong maritime roots influenced its representation throughout the West Indies and the Caribbean. Its commercial relations with the West Indies began with a group of merchants from Halifax, Nova Scotia, who formed the Merchant's Bank in 1864, and were engaged in the thriving sea-going trade between Halifax and the West Indies. In those days Canadian southbound ships carried mainly flour, codfish and timber, returning north with their cargoes of sugar, rum, cotton and spices. Through branches established in all major trade centres in the Caribbean, RBC offered valuable facilities for promoting trade. Early days The bank's first venture south was Bermuda in 1882 followed by Cuba in 1899. By 1914, the bank's international network included Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Trinidad, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Barbados, British Honduras (now Belize) and Grenada. In that same year, RBC purchased the British Guiana Bank that had opened in 1836. By 1984 the bank had opened a total of 15 branches in Guyana (formerly British Guiana) and in November 1984 RBC ceased to operate in Guyana. The Bio-diversity Centre in Georgetown, created to study Guyana's largely intact rain forest, was built with funds from RBC's operations in Guyana, since it was impossible to take them out of the country due to foreign exchange restrictions.

In 1966, the Cayman Islands Football Association was formed, to administer the sport in the Islands, which by then had a growing domestic league. As the game grew, the need for expanding football facilities became evident. In 1982 the Annex Field, originally built by developer Mike Simmons, was further improved. Among the guests were then FIFA President Joao Havelange and the legendary Brazilian hero of the game, Pele. While on this visit, Pele officially opened the Donovan Rankine Field in East End, also built in 1995. The North Side field came in for redesign and upgrade in 1998/1999 and the Bodden Town Field is still undergoing construction.
