Culture
Grand Cayman has been heavily influenced by American mores, especially in George Town and the resorts along Seven Mile Beach. In the smaller villages and on Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, the culture is more traditionally West Indian, although the British influence is close to the surface. English is, after all, the only language spoken on the islands, and the Queen's birthday is celebrated every June with a parade and a 21-gun salute. West Indian traditions are noticeable in the soca, calypso and reggae you'll hear emanating from locals' jeeps, clubs and bars. The Cayman's most prominent living artist is Gladwyn K Bush, an elderly painter known to most as Miss Lassie. Born in 1914, Miss Lassie didn't begin painting until encouraged by a spiritual experience in 1984. Her vibrant 'markings' (as she calls them) are mostly representations of biblical scenes as envisioned in her dreams. Miss Lassie's home on South Sound Road (ask a local for directions) is covered in paintings and is a bit of a landmark. There are lots of churches in the Caymans and lots of Christians of every stripe frequenting them. Sunday is very much a day of churchgoing, and visitors are welcome to attend most services. Whether it's a part of the religious ethic or a throwback to straitlaced British behavior, politeness and modesty are much appreciated by Caymanians: a 'good morning' will go a long way, topless bathing is illegal and it's definitely

Cayman Islands History
Columbus came upon the islands in 1503, naming them Las Tortugas because their only inhabitants were vast numbers of turtles. By the mid 1500s they were known as the Caymanas, the Carib word for crocodile. They were frequently visited by ships - including pirate ships - in the 1500s and 1600s, but the first settlers didn't arrive until 1655 when deserters from the English army that was then capturing Jamaica made their way to Grand Cayman. Later arrivals were also from the British Isles - England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Slaves of African descent also played a role in the islands' development, though the Caymans never became lucrative plantation isles like others in the Caribbean. The slaves were emancipated in 1834, and thereafter some escaped slaves from other parts of the New World settled on the island.

More than half a million people visit each year - 80% are from the U.S. and Canada, but lately more Europeans have been discovering the islands. The other big business is finance: The Caymans are among the favorite offshore banking locales in the world. More than 500 banks are based there, holding more than US$450 billion in assets. On paper, there are nearly 34,000 registered companies who take advantage of the favorable tax status offered by the islands. The government opened a stock exchange in 1997. The Cayman Islands remain a British Crown Colony, with a governor appointed by the British monarch, though the islands retain a largely autonomous legislature.

    When to Go
Given that mid-December to mid-April (winter) is the peak tourist season, when rates are substantially higher and beaches and lodgings more crowded, it's best to go in the summer. There is more rain in summer, but it tends to come in downpours that clear as quickly as they arrive. Nervous Nellies will tell you that this is hurricane season, but the chances that you'll get swept up in the big one are slim. Even so, it's best to keep an eye on the weather reports in the days before your arrival.

About a third of all residents are non-Caymanians. Most are from the US, Canada, the UK and nearby Jamaica, although a total of 113 nationalities are represented. English is the primary language in the Cayman Islands, but you'll notice it is spoken with a unique lilt, one a little different from accents in other areas of the Caribbean. It's a reminder of the islands' earliest Welsh, Scottish, and English settlers. You'll often hear the Jamaican patois as well.

    INTRODUCTION

Several turtle species have been produced commercially, including the soft shell turtle, Trionyx sinensis japanicus , in Japan; the red ear slider, Pseudemys scripta elegans , and the diamond back terrapin, Malaclemmys terrapin sp. in the U.S.A.; and the green sea turtle, Chelonia mydas , in the Cayman Islands, Surinam, Reunion and Australia (Fig. 14.1) . The soft shell turtle and diamond back terrapin are cultured solely for food, the red ear slider for the pet industry, and the green sea turtle for food, leather and decorative products.
    FRESHWATER TURTLE CULTURE
Historical Pond culture of the freshwater species began from the turn of the century in small systems in both Japan and the U.S.A. (Mitsukuri, 1904; and Hildebrand, 1929). Kurajiro Hattori began the culture of the soft shell turtle, or suppon, as part of a polyculture enterprise together with goldfish, carp and eel in Tokyo as early as 1875 (Mitsukuri, 1904). He later moved and expanded his operation at Shizuoka. Central Japan continues to supply the majority of the nation's farmed turtle market, although the industry is expanding to the warmer areas of southern Japan. Pond culture of the diamond back terrapin in the U.S.A. was developed along similar lines by the Bureau of Fisheries and private individuals in the early 1900's in North Carolina and Maryland. There is little commercial culture in the U.S.A. today, and most of the restaurant trade is supplied by wild-caught turtles. Pond culture of the red ear slider in Louisiana for the pet industry began in the 1960's and closely parallels the culture techniques for the terrapin and soft shell turtle.

The Cayman Islands' principal arts development organisation, the Cultural Foundation exists to stimulate, facilitate and preserve cultural and artistic expression generally, particularly the preservation and exploration of Caymanian performing, visual and literary arts. To this end, the Foundation initiates and runs diverse programmes aimed at encouraging and promoting the artistic talents of Cayman's most valuable resource, her people. Besides producing a number of high quality theatrical events at the Harquail Theatre every year, the Cultural Foundation manages the US$4 million multipurpose venue which was donated to the people of Cayman by resident, Mrs. Helen Harquail. The theatre is regularly rented out to groups and individuals for a variety events throughout the year.
