OLDER DOGS AND CATS
This is written with a heavy heart and perhaps, over emotional feelings. A long-time member, having lost her closest friend of many years, and then lost the last of her pets a month later, thought her life was over and then ended it. Regrettably, we only know a small number of our older members personally, usually due to their presence at our events or Open House. Many have lost their spouse and have a pet or pets to help alleviate their isolation and loneliness. It is a common feeling to most of these people that they are too old to adopt a new animal when their last one has passed on. Tragically this mind set deprives them of the love and companionship only a pet can provide. Additionally, it prevents needy animals that would appreciate having a loving home, perhaps the only one they would ever know. Open Door has many older dogs and cats that would give love, pleasure, and companionship to these lonely people. This is a great solution to the dual problems of an older animal lover without a pet to love and a homeless older animal without a home or master. Further, Open Door guarantees that we will re-admit and care for any animal that survives its owner. This provision has always been a part of our adoption policy.

About Us
Noah's Bark is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit local pet rescue organization based in the Los Angeles South Bay area. We are committed to finding permanent and happy homes for unwanted and homeless pets in our community. The organization was founded by Lila Hemenway in 1997. We rescue and rehome approximately 300 pets each year. Our organization does not have a shelter, volunteers provide foster care for animals while they await placement. Pets come to us as strays, owner turn ins and from LA area shelters. We get dogs of all sizes and ages, purebreds and mixes alike. Although we primarily rescue dogs and puppies, we also have cats and kittens for adoption. You can read about a few of our more memorable rescues on our Amazing Rescues page.

Heartworm Disease: This mosquito-transmitted disease can be fatal to your dog. In areas that have a year-round mosquito problem, it is recommended that dogs be kept on a heartworm preventative throughout the year. After having your dog tested for heartworm by your veterinarian, ask about heartworm preventatives, available in chewable or pill form and given daily or monthly. Housing: Be sure to provide proper shelter for your pets. If yours in an indoor pet, his bed or crate should be kept in a warm, draft-free area, preferably elevated slightly off the floor. If your pet is kept outdoors, provide a warm insulated pet house or shelter. The house should be elevated enough so that moisture cannot accumulate inside. If possible, provide a "door" (perhaps of canvas) to keep out the winter winds. If your pet is in a pen, you might block the wind and weather with bales of straw and stretch canvas over the top of the pen. If the wind chill or other weather conditions become severe, bring your pet inside. Frostbite: Remove ice and snow from your pet's paws and coat at once. Frostbitten skin may turn reddish, white or gray, and it may be scaly or sloughing. If you suspect frostbite, take your pet to a warm place immediately. Thaw out frostbitten areas slowly by applying warm moist towels that are changed frequently. Continue until the affected areas become flushed. Contact your veterinarian as soon as possible; he/she will probably want to evaluate the seriousness of the conditions.

FALL and WINTER PET CARE TIPS
Fall and winter and the holiday seasons all can pose special risks to your pets. Here are some tips for keeping everyone safe and healthy.
Maintenance Tips
  • Always provide fresh, clean water for your pet. If the weather is cold, please check their water for ice formation and remove the ice.
  • Indoor pets should be provided with a warm, dry area free from drafts. Provide bedding that off cold floors, and wash bedding weekly if possible (the fleas will hate you).
  • Outdoor pets should have dry shelter out of the wind. Bring cats and dogs into the house if the weather conditions are rainy , snowy or weather conditions are severe (cold, etc).
  • Staying warm requires extra calories, pets may need more food or a change in diet. Talk to your veterinarian about your pets needs.
  • Ice, snow and mud-Remove ice, salt, mud, snow from your pets coats, feet as soon as possible. If the skin looks reddish, white or grey in cold weather, may be scaly or peeling, suspect frostbite if the weather has been really cold. Talk to a veterinarian immediately.
  • Shedding-Most dogs and cats shed their summer coats in the fall before putting on their winter coat. Most years this is light and not very noticable. Special attention should be paid to hair coats and daily or weekly brushing (as needed) should help your pet and you be happier.

96. Hyperthyroidism In Cats - Pet Health | Cat Health | Pet Supplies
Professional pet care and quality pet supplies are vital for pet health. Always consult your veterinarian about your cat s health and your choice of supplies.
http://www.felinediabetes.com/thyroid.htm
Pet Health: Hyperthryroidism in Cats
What is Hyperthyroidism?
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located around the cat's throat that regulates many aspects of the cat's metabolic rate. The most common hormonal disease of cats, hyperthyroidism is generally caused by the development of benign tumor in the gland. However, a small percentage of the cancers are malignant. It is estimated that hyperthyroidism effects 2% of older cats. In hyperthyroidism (hyper="high") , too much thyroid hormone is being produced, so your cat's metabolic rate is too high. Hyperthyroidism affects virtually every organ system, and can result in behavioral changes, weight loss, excessive or decreased appetite, hyperactivity or lethargy, fever, rapid or irregular heartbeat, shedding, increased water consumption (polydipsia) and urination (polyuria), vomiting, diarrhea and osteoporosis. In some cats, the disorder produces atypical signs such as depression, inappetance or weakness. Diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease and other conditions that also affect older cats need to be ruled out prior to settling on a diagnosis of hyperthyroidism, even if tests indicate it is present. In older cats, this disease is common enough that routine screening is considered to be necessary by many veterinarians. Due to the potential for numerous secondary complications, such as heart disease and digestive problems, early diagnosis is a good idea. Consider asking your vet about tests for hyperthyroidism if your cat is over 10 years of age.

http://www.murphydogbooks.net/
Pet Training Made Easy
The Humane Society is concerned about the number of animals surrendered to shelters because of problem behaviors. Often owners are unaware of what to expect from their pets and don't know how to handle their challenging behaviors.
When we think of pets, we tend to conjure up warm and friendly images: new puppies cavorting together, kittens playing with a ball of twine, a parakeet sitting on its owner's finger singing sweet nothings into its owner's ear, a faithful Retriever at its master's side. It's this warm and fuzzy side of pet ownership, plus the unconditional companionship that pets provide, that helps forge the strong bond that often exists between people and their pets. Unfortunately, though, there's another side to pet ownership that we don't hear so much about; what happens when pets do not live up to our expectations of them and the bond between the owner and the pet weakens or completely breaks down.
Behavior problems are almost invariably the reason behind this rift. Some owners simply suffer the adversity and soldier on. Others would seek help but do not know where to find it. Yet another group surrenders their pet to the local shelter or pound on the off chance that it will be adopted. This solves their problem with the pet but not the pet's problem and no one learns from the experience. There is an old Swedish proverb that says, "Some people make the same mistake a thousand times and call it experience." That certainly applies here, as some of the same owners simply obtain another pet and repeat the cycle of ignorance.
