Over the years LAA has provided food, shelter, and new homes for countless dogs and cats. Apart from the animals which have been abandoned, the most common reasons for pets needing care are broken homes, accommodation problems and the death of their owner. Whatever the reason, LAA is committed to providing the animals with the care and sanctuary they need, and for as long as they need it.
LAA operates a non-euthanasia policy and animals are only put to sleep on veterinary advice. Most people recognise the need for Animal Rescue Centres to be efficiently run with caring policies. The work of LAA is based on three prime objectives: To provide sanctuary and a second start to unwanted and homeless pets To reunite lost pets with their owners through its Petfinder Service operated in conjunction with BBC Radio Leicester To help owners keep their pets by providing temporary accommodation when space permits Go to top

Pancreatitis in Cats
Main Index Cats Diseases and Problems
PANCREATITIS IN CATS Pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas, is a disease seen frequently in dogs. In cats it used to be considered rare but we now believe that it is simply difficult to diagnose when it occurs and is probably a common problem, especially in older cats. The pancreas is an important organ located near the small intestine. It is responsible for the production of most of the enzymes that digest food, and it also produces insulin. When the pancreas is diseased or injured, the enzymes it produces leak in and around the pancreas, damaging it and the other organs nearby. These enzymes that are leaking out break down fat and protein locally, instead of traveling down the pancreatic duct to the intestines. In effect, the cat or dog digests its own tissues. The abdomen soon becomes inflamed, and may subsequently become infected. An animal with pancreatitis may show such symptoms as lethargy, fever, vomiting, diarrhea (which is often bloody), refusal to eat and abdominal pain. Symptoms may start suddenly or come on gradually, and can range from mild and intermittent to severe and life threatening. In cats it is often subtle, appearing as vague signs such as poor appetite or gradual weight loss, without the more dramatic signs that are usually seen in dogs. The disease may be seen in any breed at any age, but it seems to be more common in older pets. Pancreatitis occasionally occurs soon after ingestion of garbage, dead animals or a fatty meal (scraps of fatty meat, cheese, whole milk, chicken skins, etc.). In many cases, however, the disease is caused by the body

  • Onions, onion powder Chocolate (baker's, semi-sweet, milk, dark) Alcoholic beverages Yeast dough Coffee (grounds, beans, chocolate covered espresso beans) Tea (caffeine) Salt Macadamia nuts Hops (used in home beer brewing) Tomato leaves and stems (green parts) Potato leaves and stems (green parts) Rhubarb leaves Avocados (toxic to birds, mice, rabbits, horses, cattle, and dairy goats) Moldy foods
Medications
Because they are so much smaller than we are, our companion animals need to be kept away from all medications. Do not give any of your medications to a pet. That includes over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, cough or cold medicines, and decongestants. Pain killers, cold medicines, anti-cancer drugs, anti-depressants, vitamins, and diet pills are all examples of human medications that can be lethal to animals, even in small doses. Please consult your veterinarian. Household Items
Common household items that can be lethal to an animal are mothballs, potpourri oils, coffee grounds, homemade play dough, fabric softener sheets, dishwashing detergent, batteries, cigarettes, and alcoholic drinks.

is a non-profit,
501(c)3 rescue group. We have an excellent relationship with Orange County Animal Services and Polk County Animal Services and have worked hand in hand with them to save the lives of animals that were on death row. Unfortunately, traditional local shelters are forced to use euthanasia regardless of age or health, as a means to control "overpopulation" of "unwanted" animals. The purpose of our organization is to save discarded companion pets' lives and find new homes for them. Our primary goal is to ensure that each and every pet we adopt out is spayed or neutered. Since we guarantee that our pets cannot reproduce, they cannot contribute offspring to add to the overpopulation in our community. We do not have a "public shelter". We are a very small but highly effective rescue group. We have a network of foster homes that help take care of our homeless pets until we can find homes for them. We are in great need of volunteers to help with daytime animal care and weekend adoptions. Come join our small but very effective rescue group. We need your help to transport animals to the clinic for sterilization and to our adoptions at local retail stores.

It's named for Frances Willis, who brought the SPCA to Dorchester County and founded the shelter. Over the years we have expanded our facility, but we continue to reach our capacity because our community is growing and because the pet overpopulation crisis is not abating. In 2002 the shelter served nearly 5,000 homeless or unwanted animals.

Contents What Is Feline Cystitis? What Causes Feline Cystitis? Are Bloody Urine and Straining to Urinate the Main Problems? How Is Cystitis Treated? ... HomeVet What Is Feline Cystitis? The term "cystitis" literally means irritation of the urinary bladder. Although this term is rather general, there is a common form of cystitis that occurs in male and female cats. This disease is also known as Feline Urologic Syndrome (FUS) or Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). It affects the bladder (not the kidneys), resulting in the production of tiny crystals and bloody urine. The cat often urinates much more frequently than normal, usually with the passage of only a few drops of urine. This can be confused with constipation. Many cats will urinate in places other than the litter box due to the irritation of the bladder wall, Hard cool surfaces such as tile floors, counter tops, sinks, and bathtubs are often used. They should not be punished for doing so. Return to menu.
