How to care for your Cat
We have a big mean black cat called Greebo and two little kittens called Magrat and Mog. We used to have a cat called Harley but she died. Magrat is black and fluffly and mog is black and white they were only born in March, so they are tiny.
Choosing your Kitten
Choose a lively, happy kitten. It is best if you can see the mother to check that she is healthy and does not have and health problems that her kittens could have caught. Your ideal kitten should have clean ears, eyes and fur. Her fur should be 'well groomed', healthy cats would not let themselves be caught looking grubby!! Its nose should be damp and its eyes bright. She should be alert, have a good appetite and a moist nose. Do not choose a cat that sneezes she could have asthma or cat flu.
Kittens should stay with their mothers until they are 6 to 8 weeks old. You should take your kitten to the vet as soon as possible. He will check she is well and give you advice on worming her and having her injections.
Cat belongings
Your kitten will need a basket to sleep in, a litter tray, a saucer for her food and a dish for her water, possibly a collar

Heartworms (Dirofilaria immitis) are parasites transmitted by mosquitoes that can potentially be fatal to your dog or cat. Many people are familiar with heartworm disease in dogs, but are unaware that cats may also contract the parasite (heartworm disease was reported in cats in 38 states by the American Heartworm Society); in fact, cats infested with heartworms often have more severe clinical signs than dogs and a poorer prognosis. Have your dog or cat tested for the presence of heartworms by your veterinarian, and ask about heartworm preventatives. Treatment for this disease can be expensive and risky for your pet prevention is easy and inexpensive. The fact that your dog only goes outside to urinate and defecate, and the fact that your cat does not go outside at all, does not eliminate the risk of disease. Mosquitoes are everywhere! Fleas:
Ticks:

Yet another parasite that is a common problem during the warmer months. Ticks are not only an irritant and nuisance to your pet, but may transmit several debilitating diseases, such as Lyme disease, babesiosis, and ehrlichiosis. Many flea prevention/treatment products will also help with control of ticks. Your veterinarian can help you recognize ticks and show you the proper way to remove them from your pet (if you simply try to remove the tick by pulling, you may leave its mouthparts embedded within your pet's skin). Owners whose dogs have substantial exposure to ticks (eg, sporting dogs, dogs that go camping, and those spending time in forest preserves or woods) should also ask their veterinarian's advice about the appropriateness of a vaccination for Lyme disease.

Newsletter Archives happypets.org Vegetarian Cats and Dogs
happypets.org is not suggesting or recommending that you switch your pet to a vegetarian diet. We are simply providing information for those who opt for this alternative. Both dogs and cats evolved as carnivores, and cats require certain nutrients that are available only from animal sources. The feline intestine is adapted for a high fat, high protein diet. Unlike dogs, the cat is unable to synthesize certain essential nutrients from other food components and, therefore, requires these nutrients to be pre-formed in their diet. However, Many vegetarians and vegans feed healthful, meatless diets to their companion animals. James Peden, author of Vegetarian Cats and Dogs, has developed Vegepet supplements to add to vegetarian and vegan recipes. They are nutritionally balanced and also come in special formulas for kittens, puppies, and lactating cats and dogs.
Important Supplements
Switching to a vegetarian diet is considerably easier for canine's than for their feline counterparts because dogs, like people, are omnivorous and usually hearty eaters. Recipes for vegetarian and vegan dogs are available along with the Vegedog supplement from James Peden’s company, Harbinger’s of a New Age (see contact information below). It is important to follow directions carefully. If you make any changes in ingredients, make sure that you do not change the nutritional balance of the recipe. If a dog receives too little protein, calcium, or vitamin D, his or her health could be jeopardized.

A healthy pet is a happy pet. Proper nutrition, regular check ups, and good grooming are key elements in assuring your pet stays healthy and happy. But there are many factors to consider when deciding what is right for your cat, such as what and how much to feed him, whether or not she should be declawed and why it's important to spay/neuter.
Behavioral Problems General Care for Cats Diet and Nutrition Vaccinations Spay/Neuter Declaw Surgery Many people choose cats as pets because they think that a cat is an easy pet to live with one that is self-sufficient not as "needy" as dogs are. Actually, cats often cause lots of mishap and mayhem. Fortunately, most cat behavior problems have simple solutions. Household Destruction
