Architecture and Historical Landmarks
All cultures throughout history have produced art, although the forms vary by both culture and historical era. The impulse to create, to realize form and order out of mere matter, is universal and perpetual. Such artwork can include visual art, literature, architecture, music, dance, and other forms. Because the history of architecture concerns buildings which have proved substantial enough to survive (at least in part) or important enough to be recorded in some way (by drawings or written description), in practice it has been the history of significant buildings - castles, cathedrals and institutional monuments. Castle of the Month June 2004:
Haverfordwest Castle

Castles have an uncanny way of gripping one's attention, especially ruined castles. Looming high overhead or jutting upward from a simple field, they unexpectedly materialize before our eyes, marking a town's highest and most naturally-defensible spot, watching the flowing waters of a passing river or the panorama of the lush Welsh countryside, foot-worn by centuries of roaming humans and livestock. The experience of "first sight," the recognition of a town's castle walls, weather-worn, graying masonry reflected against the trees and housetops or silhouetted against the clear cobalt skies, permanently imprints the mind. The image is readily accessible, and we can tirelessly replay our experience in the blink of an eye. Once spotted, the ancient towers, decaying walls, and grass-encrusted earthen piles become a part of us, and we thirst for more, more discovery, more connection to the Welsh past. The A40 winds west across Wales linking Carmarthen to Haverfordwest, roving past typically Welsh hillsides, quiet cottages and hungry sheep. As it approaches the town fondly known as H'West, the scenic roadway merges with a maze of whirling roads filled with cars heading in every compass direction, rushing to some distant (or perhaps not so distant) destination. The A40 also introduces us to the Welsh Middle Ages. Swiftly, as you curve past the train station, the mighty walls of Haverfordwest Castle wrench your focus away from the traffic (be careful, there's a roundabout ahead!). The vision evokes a myriad of feelings, including the exhilaration of first sight. Your curiosity piques as you approach the old castle walls, and is intensified as you hurtle up the shop-lined High Street.

    Architecture
Belarus lies on a spiritual boundary of the Eastern and Western Europe, in the break of their cultural areas and religion systems. In the natural-and-geographic sense, Belarus is divided into the northern and southern parts, differed in their relief pattern, water systems, vegetation character. Naturally, all that told on specificity of architecture, as it is more than other arts dependent on natural and climatic conditions, availability of local building materials. In the 13th century under threats from the East (Tatar-Mongolian invasion) and from the West (expansion of the Teutonic Knights' Order) the Great Lithuanian Principality was formed, the present Belarus becoming its territorial kernel. The period of total defense architecture set on. The main type of monumental constructions were castles of princes and magnates with powerful walls and towers built of huge boulders and big-sized bricks, surrounded by ramparts and ditches. The donjon tower in Kamenets (13th century), castles in Lida, Krevo (14th century), Mir, Nesvizh, Grodno (16th century) remained. First Catholic cult constructions bore artistic features of Central Europe "brick" Gothic. More numerous then Orthodox churches transformed into small fortresses flanked with battle towers in their corners. All the neighboring population gathered in them in case of military hazard, because villages and small towns were utterly wood-built. Fortress-type churches preserved in Synkovichi, Maly Mojeikov (16th century). Houses were built far away from each other because of frequent fires. The economic and cultural revival of Belarusian towns began in the 16th century, promoted by the all-European Reformation movement. Of numerous Protestant directions Calvinism left a special trace in architecture of Belarus, the biggest magnates were its adherents. A considerable number of Calvinist "assembles" combining cult features of Protestantism with aesthetics of northern Renaissance were raised on their money.

The United Kingdom is comprised of two large and several tiny islands just off the north west coast of the European Continent. Surprisingly, for it's size, The UK has been a major player in world history and even more strangely once oversaw a vast empire that stretched throughout virtually the entire globe. The British penchant for cultural diversity is somewhat at odds with the UK itself. United in name only England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales are geographically individual and each has their own very distinct cultures. Even within the countries themselves, regional traditions, dialects and attitudes vary widely. The one thing that the whole of the United Kingdom seems to have in common is the ethic of hard work and the love of a good drink – the British invented pub-culture. England is probably the most diverse of the four countries both topographically and culturally. The north and south divide is certainly no myth but in all fairness this is probably only really apparent to the English themselves. As far as history goes England is like a vast theme park of castles, battlefields, legendary cities, incredible architecture and down right dirty deeds; English history is steeped in murder and betrayal. Swinging London is the country's main attraction. A vast and filthy metropolis which is comprised of several interconnected towns each of which has its own distinctive character – from the grandeur of the ‘City’ to the bright lights and glamour of Leicester Square, the bustle of Camden Lock to the cool ambience of Covent Garden – London is never anything less than fascinating.
