The re-united kingdom : Henry I Beauclerc The architectural works of Henri I The reign of Henri I marks an apogee in the period of Romanesque art. Normandy saw the completion of major construction sites where work had started at the end of the 11 th century in Rouen, Fécamp, Caen and Avranches for example. The destruction caused by the wars between Henri I and the partisans of Robert Curthose were followed by reconstructions, the most significant of was the Bayeux cathedral, which had been burnt down within the town when it was besieged by Henri I in 1105. Finally new sites were begun such as at Saint-Georges de Boscherville. The reign of Henri I was also characterised by the large number of rural sanctuaries built or rebuilt in the Cotentin, Bessin, Pays de Caux regions, or in the south of the Duchy around Sées, Alençon, and Domfront. In England which had been cut off by conflicts, Anglo-Norman architecture experienced original developments in Ely, Peterborough, Romsey, Winchester, Canterbury, and Norwich. The first vaults on ogive crossings were experimented with at Durham cathedral. Greater importance was given to sculpted décor which developed geometric figures, or was inspired by the art of illuminated manuscripts or the resurgence of Nordic themes. This tendency was seen in many of the sites begun on both sides of the Channel. While King Henri was not himself a great builder of churches - with the exception of his foundation of Reading abbey - he intervened more directly in the military field.

Castle presenter and historian, Marc Morris, introduces 10 of the best-preserved examples across the United Kingdom. Castles were both a fortress and a home. Built to withstand armed assault they also housed elegant ladies, poets, priests, children and animals - as well as brutish warriors. None of Marc's top ten properties offer accommodation, so it's just as well that we at Celtic Castles have over 50 for you to stay in! If you want more information on the TV programme, check out -

Simon's Pictures from the United Kingdom About Me My Research CV Photo Gallery ... Links Road Trip around Britain These are some pictures taken during a trip around Britain with my father. The driving route that we took is marked out on the map, while larger dots indicate overnight stops. These stops, going anti-clockwise from London, were: York, Hexham, Edinburgh (2 nights), Inverness, Glasgow, Manchester, and Oxford. The trip involved a lot of driving (thanks to my father!), and we managed to cover a lot of Britain. It may seem like a long way on the map, but the distance from Land's End (SW of England) to John O'Groats (NE of Scotland) is probably less than the distance from Sydney to Melbourne! United Kingdom - overview
London, the capital city of England, is energetic, cosmopolitan, hectic, diverse and thrilling. It is the largest city in Europe, and is a mixture of wealth and poverty, of glitz and grime, of imposing buildings and elegant shops, of world-class theatre and incredible nightclubs. Sights not to be missed include the National Gallery, the Tate Gallery, the British Museum, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, and Covent Garden. Scotland's capital Edinburgh, is perhaps the country's most alluring city, it is a fascinating place with many historical and artistic treasures, a fantastic pub scene and scenery as beautiful as the Scottish highlands. Edinburgh Castle is a good place to start your exploration of the Scottish capital. The castle is beautiful, mysterious, romantic and a reminder of the city's bloody past. The magnificent panorama from the battlements will give visitors a splendid idea of the city and the surrounding terrain. Edinburgh’s Royal Mile is one of the world’s most captivating streets. Running from the castle to Holyrood Palace, it affords breathtaking views over the Firth of Forth and of Arthur’s Seat, the extinct volcano south-west of the city centre. Cardiff, a lively university city, and the capital of Wales, boasts a striking city-centre castle, an important national museum and art gallery, redeveloped dock area and beautiful architecture. The Welsh people are a cultured race with a great love of poetry, drama, music, and Rugby. Situated among the shops in Cardiff city centre, the Millennium Stadium or Cardiff Arms Park as it is known throughout the rugby world is the home of the national side.

Surrey
Effectively a rural suburb of southern London, for those who can afford it, Surrey is bisected laterally by the chalk escarpment of the North Downs which rise west of Guildford, peak around Box Hill near Dorking and continue east into Kent. The portion of Surrey within the M25 orbital motorway has little natural and virtually no historical appeal, being a collection of satellite towns and light industrial installations serving the capital, although an enjoyable day can be spent at Sandown Park or Epsom racecourses, or trying the rides at one of Surrey's theme parks, Thorpe Park or Chessington World of Adventures. Outside the M25's ring Surrey takes on a more pastoral demeanour, with the county town of Guildford, the open heath land of Surrey's western borders and Farnham, which houses the county's only intact castle. Finally, it's difficult to miss Guildford's monumentally unremarkable modern Gothic Cathedral (daily 8am–5.30pm; www.guildford-cathedral.org), ostentatiously perched on Stag Hill, a mile northwest of the centre. Resembling an outsized crematorium and consecrated in 1961, the cathedral's plain, bright interior has all the spirituality of a concert hall, but without the acoustics. Its most notable claim to fame is having been a location in the film The Omen. Tucked into Surrey's southwestern corner, ten miles west of Guildford along the exposed ridgetop of the Hog's Back, lies FARNHAM. Smaller and, in parts, more charming than Guildford, Farnham moves at a slower pace. Despite its thousand-year history, the majority of Farnham's architecture dates from the eighteenth century, when the town enjoyed a boom period based on hop farming.
