Möller Castle Country T here are about 200 reasons why Skåne is called "Castle Country." Throughout the green, mild countryside and the coastal reaches, the castles are never far, and they cast a fairy tale glow across the land. Many of these architectural treasures date back to the 14th and 15th centuries - one of the most opulent eras in Swedish history. In their heydey, they were built to be impregnable, but today some of them even offer hotel accommodations and restaurants. But there is much more to do in Skåne than tour its castles. It would be hard to find a landscape better designed for golf, and 30 of Sweden's best courses can be found here. The region also has beaches on both the Baltic and the North Sea, and its cuisine and history are particularly distinct. For hundreds of years, it was a kingdom in itself, and later it was ruled by Denmark. This mixed heritage has made it rich in tradition Major Attractions: Malmö:
Malmö's harbor is one of the most picturesque in Scandinavia, and few leave the city without being entranced by it and its other architectural masterpieces - especially the 16th century town hall and city square. Though Malmö is Sweden's third largest city, with 250,000 people it has the atmosphere of a town. It has a major art scene, and part of the cityscape's charm are the galleries and museums are woven into it.

Austria Austria, at the geographical heart of Europe, is renowned for its ski resorts set on spectacular mountains, overlooking crystal-clear lakes and voluptuously green valleys. Throughout the country are glorious architectural reminders of the once-powerful Hapsburgs, who dominated central Europe for seven centuries. Austria is organized into 9 counties. Vienna, has the most impressive ornate architecture and is the ulture capital as well as the former imperial residence of the Hofburg. Austria's other cities are similarly infused with a historical magic, notably Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart, with stunning Baroque churches set before a backdrop of snow-covered peaks, and Innsbruck, in the center of the Austrian Alps. Vienna is the cultural center of Austria, providing the traveler with many opportunities for theater, wonderful castles and architecture to enjoy and an abundance of guided walks of a one of the most attractive cities in Europe. Belarus The country is covered largely by forests and lakes, is rich in wildlife and crossed by major rivers such as the Dnieper. Minsk, the capital of Belarus, little of the old city survives except a few 17th-century buildings. Modern Minsk is symmetrically designed with wide embankments flanking the Svisloch River. The cultural scene is very diverse with the Belarusian Ballet and museums such as the National Museum of Belarusian History and Culture. Minsk has a thriving cultural scene with opera, ballet, theatre, puppet theatre and a circus

Dear friends, would any one of you be interested in creative photography courses? This project is on the "back burner" since last year. Now someone suggested to make one or two courses this summer or fall as a test. Possible locations Kingston, Ontario, Toronto, Ontario, Montreal, Quebec, New York, N.Y., Washington, D.C., White Mountains, N.H. or "Bohemian Paradise" (Czech Republic, including Prague, Carlsbad, Marienbad, Spa Podebrady, castles, "best beers in the world", good wine, good meals, museums, galleries, opera, concerts, nudist beaches etc.). Courses in Canada or the U.S.A. would be anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks, in the Czech Republic it would be 2 - 3 weeks with possibility to combine it with a cooking course in one of the best hospitality colleges in Europe, spas treatment (rejuvenation), culture, nudist beaches etc. According to interest of each group.

Castles and Country Houses: A Social, Economic, and Architectural Study
X101.6 (3 semester units in history) EDP 014175
The development of the English country house, from 12th- century castle to 19th-century mansion, appears to have stopped. Few people have the money or the desire to build or live in such houses in the 21st century. Merely maintaining the fabric of surviving country houses is becoming a major financial problem. As a result, more people are beginning to ask how and why these houses were built in the first place, and the experts are realizing that they have forgotten to ask themselves these basic questions.
Until recently, architectural history was only studied by art historians who concentrate on the sources and evolution of style and taste. But buildings surviving from the past contain many other important messages that can be read by using methods of archaeology or social and economic history.
Art history is pushed into the background in this course, and most of our time will be devoted to the archaeological, social, and economic questions raised by country houses. The builders clearly wished to demonstrate their wealth, power, taste, and status. A gentleman was required to spend lavishly: how did he finance building with so many competing calls upon his income? Power was achieved by influencing social superiors and peers, and by impressing social inferiors. A gentleman's house was his "Theatre of Hospitality" (Wootton 1624)—but who was admitted and how were different visitors entertained? What rooms were required? And what ceremonies were performed in each? A gentleman's taste was shown by correct hospitality, in adopting fashionable decoration both inside and outside the house, and by appropriate leisure pursuits, all of which made changing demands upon the fabric and layout of the house.

The landlocked country (it doesn't border on any sea) is situated in the geographic centre of Europe and consists of three historical areas – Bohemia, Moravia and the Czech part of Silesia . The Czech Republic is called the roof of Europe since all the rivers which have their source in the area drain into neighbouring countries. After World War II, Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia . Now a member of NATO, the Czech Republic has moved toward integration in world markets, a development that poses both opportunities and risks. here are about 10 million people in the Czech Republic (1.3 million in Prague).

Several architectonic styles influenced the urban spaces during the 20th century. The art nouveau era imported by Catalonian artists; the eclecticism that imposes and generalises itself; the neo-historicism and the art deco, which introduced the modern movement of rationalist style. All of our cities, especially Havana, offer buildings of high patrimonial value due to the combination of multiple styles that come together in a cosmopolitan visual delight. The system of military fortresses in the city and around the country is especially attractive to visitors. The fortress of San Carlos de la Cabaña, the biggest in America, and the Castillo de la Real Fuerza, first bulwark castle in the continent, are both in Havana. Others that can be visited are the Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro and the Castillo de la Punta, in Havana; Castillo de Jagua in Cienfuegos; San Pedro de la Roca in Santiago de Cuba and Fuerte de Matachin in Baracoa. We could not leave this piece without writing about Havana's famous Malicon, currently under refurbishment, and due to be finished at the end of 2000. This multicoloured mish-mash of architecture is the focus of 100's of thousand of photos annually.

Text and photographs: Frantisek Staud Home Travel What to look for while roaming the country of ever-steaming trains, ever-singing Bards and never-muted nationalists, country of wide horizons and even wider place names: Wales Medieval Castles are undoubtedly among the greatest of Welsh attractions. They have been photographed from all conceivable angles at all lighting conditions, and you are not likely to come up with a strikingly novel image. Neither this, nor the fact that the national pride of Wales was built by an English King (Edward I.) should put you off. The castles are just too omnipresent and too majestic to be ignored. What's more, the most beautiful ones are conveniently located along the railway system. If you have time to see only a few of them, then Conwy Castle After a few more stops westwards from Conwy, the train reaches Bangor, a university town and a good base to survey the north-west coast. The Penrhyn Castle , located 1 or 2 miles from Bangor, does not belong to the large family of Edwardian castles, but its ivy-covered walls exposed to the evening light are very photogenic anyway. It is a strenuous walk along a busy road from the town; taking a bus or taxi is a better idea.
