HELFSTYN History and architectural development The Helfštýn castle ranks among the most extensive castles in Europe and it is one of the best preserved castle complexes in the Czech Republic. Individual architectural groups arose from the beginning of the l4th up to the end of the l8th centuries. In this time interval, the castle was systematically reconstructed and widened. Its building development, however, was strongly influenced by deliberate damanging, ordered by Austrian military administration in Vienna in the year 1656. Further deterioration was then note in the first half of the l9th century. In spite of that, the ramparts remained intact all over the periphery and also the stone walls of individual buildings are well-preserved. Only ceilings and roofs did not survive. In its present appearance, the castle has the character of an extensive architecture of fortification with six gates, a number of dungeons and buildings and with a recognisable system of mounds extending down to the locality of Týn upon Beèva. The Helfštýn castle performed its important military function as a base of Hussites agains the German catholic town of Olomouc as well as in support of troops of the king Jirí of Podìbrady against the Hungarian king Mathias Corvin. The castle also accomplished its important role during the Thirty Years' War and in the course of the Turkish threat to Moravia. The castle belonged to significant feudal lines, members of which had certain ideas about their residence according to their economic power and social prestige. The dwelling function of the building developed accordingly. The inner castle was founded at the beginning of the l4th century by Friduš of Linava. The complex construction development of the building is best documented by the building of the castle palace. Today's two palace wings arose by connection of two separate palaces, of the two-storeyed northern palace belonging to Vok I of Kravare and of the eastern tower palace belonging to Drslav of Kravare.

Denise's Pictures Schloss Augustusburg in Bruehl (Schloss=Castle) 03-20-04 Today a bunch of us went to Schloss Augustusburg, built by Clemens August von Wittelsbach around 1725. The castle was interesting to see and is supposedly a masterpiece of Rococo(?) architecture. They wouldn't let us take pictures of the inside of the castle, which I guess is customary, so the only pictures I have up today are from the outside. The interior of the castle was very brightly painted in pinks, teals, and blues. There was also some really cool marble work. The columns inside were made of a mixture of marble and other German words I couldn't understand, colored with things like ox blood, and then mixed together with the urine of young boys because it's less acidic than adult urine. I have no idea why they needed urine in the mix, but apparently it was necessary. Crazy Germans. Unfortunately, construction was being done on the front of the castle, and it ruined my picture of the front. But this is the view from the side. The palace was surrounded by gardens and terraces which were designed by the same person who designed the Venice Gardens. There's also a nice forest just beyond these gardens. It'll be a nice place to picnic in the summer.

Some can be dark and gloomy, others bright and joyful, some forcefully dominate their surroundings, while others merge into an idyllic setting. Defensive castles became an integral part of the Polish landscape in the XIVth century, in the reign of Casimir the Great who, as it subsequently came to be said, "found Poland built of wood and left her built of stone". POLAND THE RESSURECTION OF MALBORK CASTLE by Robert Soule: Some of Poland's greatest cultural achievements during the Middle Ages came in the area of its architecture. During this period the country saw the construction of huge Roman Catholic cathedrals and elaborate town buildings which were the equal of anything in Western Europe. Much of this architecture still survives today, although a great deal of it had to be rebuilt because of the damage caused during the many wars throughout Poland's history. It was, in fact, this constant need to fight for survival that gave birth to what might be one of Poland's greatest legacies, the impressive medieval castles found throughout the country. The local nobility who lived in these often made them centers of culture, buying and commissioning artworks throughout Europe and collecting them in their castle. One of the best examples of this is Malbork Castle, a huge, sprawling castle complex lying about 30 miles away from Gdansk, a Polish port which was known as Danzig throughout most of Poland's history. This area has been one of the most hotly-contested areas in Poland for the past 700 years, so it's probably not surprising that the castle is as large as it is. It covers the area of about 40 football fields, and has walls which at most points are 20 inches thick. It is filled with all of the classic castle elements, including turrets, drawbridges, moats, and vaults. The castle was on Polish territory until 1308, when a group of returning Crusaders calling themselves the Teutonic knights seized it and made it the seat of a new state which controlled most of the wheat and amber trade going into Prussia. They also spent a lot of time raiding Poland, and the Polish spent the next century trying to get the castle back. In 1410 they finally did, and the castle stood up to another few centuries of conflict. Its worst moments came during World War II, when a battle between the Germans and Soviets lasted for six weeks on the site. However, the castle was so well-constructed that even after this conflict, most of its walls were still standing.
