H@R! : Heritage at Risk
GERMANY
The protection and conservation of monuments in the 16 German (States) are laid down in separate laws. Each State has its own State Conservation Office which looks after historic buildings and archaeological sites. Generally speaking, the conservation of cultural heritage is a political matter which is taken very seriously. After decades of neglect in the old parts of the East German towns the German reunification confronted the new States with the task of having to keep up and repair an enormous number of historic monuments. In the meantime not only many public buildings but also a considerable amount of private historic houses, ranging from medieval half-timbered houses to 19 th century districts, have been saved from dilapidation - the latter group profiting from (a city building fund) as well as from tax exemptions for owners of cultural heritage places. However, many buildings are still at risk and need to be restored. An example of the particular problems that East Germany is facing is Quedlinburg, a town founded in the early Middle Ages, which is now on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Before Reunification the majority of the large number of half-timbered houses were to be demolished and consequently were no longer maintained. In the meantime considerable effort has been made to restore these houses with funds from the city building fund, however a great number are still empty. This is often the case where the right of possession is in doubt. Therefore, it is necessary to continue the effort to protect the historic fabric of the buildings.

My First Trip To Europe
My friend Ed and I went to Germany, Luxemburg, and Austria during the second half of February 1997. (Most of our time was spent in Germany.) It was an excellent trip. We had a lot of fun, and have returned with a few stories. While in Germany, we stayed with our friend Tony Scott and his family. Tony is a Senior Airman in the US Air Force, and is stationed at Ramstein Air Force Base. Tony took two weeks of leave and shuttled us around, showing us the sights. My friend Ed has also written up stories about the trip. His stories can be found on his web site Since I'm not writing up everything I did over the entire two week trip, I'm also not going to bother making this chronological. If you would like to read a chronological description of what we did after Ed got there, check out his stories
Here are my stories:
Our dining experiences were some of the most enjoyable times we had in Germany. We decided early in the trip to spend a while each day searching out The Place . We defined The Place as the most authentic, most German restaurant possible. (Ed has a great definition of

Heidelberg Castle
This castle made from the red sandstone of the nearby Neckar river, was built in the mid-16th century, and is one of the best examples of German Renaissance architecture. It was ruined by the French barely a hundred years later and left as such.
All images ©1992, Jeffrey L. Cooper Festung Königstein This spectacular medieval fortress is close both to Dresden and the Czech Republic border. It sits on top of this large rocky outcrop, and was quite impenetrable in it's day. More recently it was used by the Nazi's to store stolen art. You can easily spend half a day here, at least, admiring both the fortress and the view. The earliest building on the site was the castle, built in the 13th century. Both images ©1993, Jeffrey L. Amsterdam, The Netherlands:
I had a 5-hour layover in Amsterdam so I took the train into the city and walked around for a while taking pictures. What a cool city. How can you not love canals and a parking lot for about 10,000 bikes? back to top
Bremen, Germany:
The purpose of this trip was to attend the International Astronautical Congress (IAC), where Jason Gallicchio and I gave talks at the SETI sessions.
The IAC had a medieval celebration of German culture. Of course, Jason and I couldn't pass up the axe throwing and crossbows booths.
Bremen, Germany is a fun town. The Hauptbahnhof (main rail station) and conference center are shown in the upper left and right. The main town square had historic buildings like the ones in the center and bottom rows.

Amongst the majestic trees you will find tradesman standing brazenly shoulder to shoulder with the kings of the castle. You may like to wander through the heart of the castle's garden and trees and go exploring. Augustusburg Castle is the darling of Brühl. Nothing has changed there for the past 250 years. It has been under the official protection of the United Nations culture fund since the 1980s. Ghosts of the Past Only a stone's throw away from Augustusburg Castle's Pedestrian Zone you find the most important piece of Baroque Architecture in the Rhineland area. On the left side there‘s French architecture, on the right the architecture is influenced by the Baroque period. Next you discover the side streets which are filled with many aspects of culture, commerce and cosy little pubs. Desires and Desired You‘ll find the castle ghosts in good spirits - cheerful after having lived life to the full in Brühl, eating, drinking and hunting. Pleasurable past times were very important to the Castlemen of Brühl. As for other desires there was no comment. There are also possibilities to satisfy their hunting wishes such as falken flying.

The Castles of
Germany
Prologue
They were chilly, rainy, overcast and foggy days around the week of December 7th, 1988, as I started a vacation tour with a visit to a software developer friend in Dusseldorf. We had a rented car and all we had to do was to show-up at Munich Airport in ten days for the flight home. With a new SVHS Video Camera in hand, we set out on a Castle Discovery Adventure.
Our tour starts in Cologne and heads up the Rhein River thru Koblenz and to Mainz. (though the footage that I actually shot started at Koblenz and ended at Bingen. There are only so many hours in a day.) Three days in Heidelberg then east to, and up the Romantic Road to Schwangau, down through Munich to Salzburg.
This WebSite is an attempt to merge my experience, snapshots from my video, a collection of archeivel images, and any contributions on the subject, into a useable historical piece about the region and its castles.

The Best Castles During the Middle Ages, Germany was divided into many intensely competitive feudal states and principalities. This unstable atmosphere encouraged the construction of fortified castles. As hostilities died down, architects began to design for comfort, style, and prestige, adding large windows, gilded stucco and plaster, frescoes, and formal gardens. As a result, Germany is full of all kinds and styles of castles (burg) and palaces (schloss). Sans Souci Palace, Potsdam: Frederick the Great's retreat, where he came to read, listen to music, and generally renew his allegiance to the principles of the Enlightenment, is Germany's most successful blend of landscape and architecture. The more than 120 hectares (300 acres) of intricately landscaped gardens have enough pavilions, fountains, orangeries, and heroic statues to keep a visitor intrigued for days. The palace itself is an architectural highlight, approached by a terraced staircase of sublime beauty. Schloss Wartburg
