Related Category: Architecture castle, type of fortified dwelling characteristic of the Middle Ages. Fortification of towns had been in practice since antiquity, but in the 9th cent. feudal lords began to develop the private fortress-residence known as the castle. It served the twofold function of residence and fortress because of the conditions of medieval life, in which war was endemic. The site of the castle was preferably on a defensible height. England and France, in general, did not afford such inaccessible locations as did the Rhine valley in Germany. Sections in this article:

castle, and the Classicist building of the Empire era. The format of the buildings became monumental. Hitler's germany required the purge of foreign elements and architecture
    http://www.geocities.com/rr17bb/hitler.html
Architecture and design in Nazi Germany
The Nazi revolution in Germany needed architecture to bequeath a new image to history, and to offer contemporary society a strong rallying point. The Classical, monumental style replaced the modern style. In the 1930s, nationalism for the first time took solid form as nationalist art.
When Nazi had their social consolidation completed, they used architecture to celebrate their image. Nazi architecture consisted of two phases between 1936 and 1940, firstly, the great set pieces of party edifies and secondly, the plans for Berlin, Nuremberg and Munich, the key cities of the Third Reich. Nazism architecture existed largely within the minds of two central personalities, Hitler and Albert Speer.
In the beginning there was an overlap of the old and the new. Until 1930 the Party did not openly criticize the industrial and social building programs of architects like Walter Gropius or Mies van der Rohe.
The National Socialist's united view on architecture was the rejection of a modern style. The Quaint vernacular style for housing and a monumental style for public buildings became the order of the day. But The National Socialists did not wholly rejected modern technology. They often used the most advanced building techniques hidden behind neoclassical facades. Along with the rejection of modern architecture came a rejection of the corresponding furniture.
Modern Movement suffered instant eclipse after the National Socialist seizure of power in January 1933. The modernist tendency to reduce all form to abstraction made it an unsatisfactory manner in which to represent the power and ideology of the state. The need to treat the problems posed by representation or lack of it has increased rather than diminished over the years. In general sense, New Tradition may be taken as evidence of the failure of abstract form to communicate.

King Ludwig II said. "I intend to rebuild the old castle ruins of Hohenschwangau by the Pollat Gorge in the genuine style of the old German Knightly fortresses........the spot is one of the most beautiful that one could ever find. " Neuschwanstein Castle, royal palace in the Bavarian Alps of Germany, the most famous of three royal palaces built for Louis II of Bavaria, sometimes referred to as Mad King Ludwig, who grew up nearby at Hohenschwangau Castle Begun in 1869 and left unfinished at Louis's death in 1886, the castle is the embodiment of 19th century romanticism. In a fantastical imitation of a medieval castle, Neuschwanstein is set with towers and spires and is spectacularly sited on a high point over the Pöllat River gorge. The construction of the castle was carried out according to a well thought-out plan. The castle was equipped with all kinds of technical conveniences which were very modern, if not to say revolutionary at that time. Running water on all floors. The spring which supplied the castle with excellent drinking water was located 200 meters above the castle. There were toilets equipped with automatic flushing on every floor. A warm air heating system for the entire building. A hot water system for the kitchen and the bath.

Architecture The first part of the Middle Ages saw very little building of any kind in western Europe, as people struggled to adjust to the fall of Rome . Some small churches were built here and there in the Visigothic Vandal , and Merovingian kingdoms, but not much else.
In the eastern Mediterranean, however, the Roman emperors built great churches and palaces, like Hagia Sophia in Constantinople (Istanbul) about 550 AD . In Italy, the Ostrogoths built churches and palaces too. And when the Arabs conquered the southern and eastern Mediterranean in the late 600's AD, they also built great mosques and palaces, like the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. In 800, they built the great mosque in Kairouan
By this time, Western Europe was also doing better.

Architecture When considering a building's design, particularly for structures built before the 20th century, keep in mind that very few buildings were actually built in one style. A large, expensive structure such as a church, usually the most significant building in any town often took centuries to complete, during which time tastes would change and plans would be altered. While each architectural era has its own distinctive features, some elements, general floor plans, and terms are common to many, or may appear near the end of one era and continue through several later ones. From the Romanesque period on, most

Sitting across the mountain from his mother’s castle (the grandest granny flat you’ll ever see), is King Ludwig II’s Neuschwanstien Castle, a stunning piece of architecture built by the fairy tale king himself in the Bavarian Alps near New Swan Lake. Unfortunately, the construction of the castle wasn’t finished before he mysteriously died and before his thrown was placed in residence. Now, the immense, almost theatrical looking castle is Bavaria’s biggest money-spinner and a grand posthumous tribute to this famous and eccentric king. Neuschwanstien Castle looks like a Disney creation, it is one of King Ludwig's II most extraordinary and elaborate fantasies and is a real must see for the romantically curious.

    The Building
"A new building for new art - in February 1997 the Galerie der Gegenwart (Gallery of Contemporary Art) was officially opened. The extension building, designed by Cologne architect Oswald Mathias Ungers forms part of the Hamburg Kunsthalle , which was built in 1869 and first extended in 1919. For O.M. Ungers the square is the perfect form, a concept which dates back to the Renaissance. His design for the new museum owes a debt of recognition above all to the work of Karl Friedrich Schinkel . Ungers has great respect for the existing facade of the Kunsthalle and for this reason conceived the new building in two parts: a four storey cube and a basement level linking the old building to the new. Taking the square as his basic shape, Ungers has created a clearly-defined, strong architecture with an interior designed specifically to meet the needs of art and its public. The bastion-like foundation serves to emphasize the insular location of the Kunsthalle.
    The Concept
"The aim of the new Gallery ist to present the most important international developments in art since 1960. While it is not possible to illustrate these in their entirety, the new museum will nevertheless attempt to do justice to the major movements which have already taken their place in art history."
