Guide Review A Marvelous Castle Tour In this splendid examination of castles in Europe and beyond, Robin Oggins offers a sound introduction to the evolution of the romantic fortifications as well as some general background on the historic events that influenced castle construction. The many dazzling photos include substantial captions about the castles' origins, locations, history, and notable features. The book concludes with a section on palaces, walled cities and modern castles and how they were influenced by medieval structures. All in all, a highly enjoyable book to savor at one's leisure.

Written by Stephanie James, who has an undergraduate degree in history and is presently a graduate student at the University of Toronto, it begins with the debate on the date of construction for the Church. Due to its style, the date is assumed to be in the late 10th, early 11th centuries. For more evidence and discussion, the reader is encouraged to link to further pages. The article continues to talk of the three purposes of the Church, being school, worship, and housing. A map of England is shown and the location of the Church is highlighted. Talk of the

Architecture Shrines Simplicity was the essence of the earlier Shinto shrines in Japan. The natives believe that the Japanese kami (gods) inhabit all natural phenomena such as volcanoes and rocks; these sacred places were thus marked with only a shimenawa (special plaited rope) and gohei (strips of white paper). The shimenawa will lead one to fences and on to the torii gates, which are now common features of a shrine. The architecture of these shrines comes in many varieties, but most were developed from storehouses and dwellings of prehistoric Japan. A pair of komainu (stone 'lion') guards the main path leading to the shrine. One will have its mouth open in a roar while the other has its mouth closed.

Introduction General Transportation King's Valley ... Projects CASTLES AMASYA CASTLE
The castle is located on the Harþena Mountain and it constitutes a natural defense shield. The inner part of the castle was made out of cut stone, and the outer walls were made of stones. It has eight defense levels. There is a secret passage in the castle, called "Cilanbolu" which was built in ancient times and is located on the pinnacle of the castle. Cilanbolu has 150 stairs that were carved downwards through the foot of the mountain. It is known that the stairs ended near the river to be able to escape easily in the times of war and also to draw water.
    GÖKÇELÝ CASTLE
It is in Gökçeli village on Castle Mountain District. There is a mound and a little "POTERN" in the castle. One can reach them descending the stairs and there are small nishes in it. It shows Post-Roman characteristics.
    KALEKÖY CASTLE
It is 40 miles far from the city centre, on the Amasya-Tokat highway. One can reach its citadel from a mountain passage located at the northern part of the castle. Ramparts and towers are made of cut stones and its original form is still remained. There is a 3,5 m deep and wide stairway of rampart cistern, which was made by carving the main rock with a slope angle of 45 degrees. There are rock graves which resemble the Amasya Rock Tombs of Pontic Kings on the south-eastern foot of the castle. The castle was used as a garrison by the Romans. It is one of the few Roman Castles that remained today.

    Palace Square
Designed as the successor to Moscow's great imperial squares, this vast formal court is best known as the focal point of the great political struggles that transformed Russia during the first decades of the twentieth century. In the wake of Bloody Sunday the country's politics became increasingly divisive, and genuine compromise and reform unlikely. Civil unrest broke out all over the country, and, with the disaster of the Russo-Japanese War, the government was forced to accede to popular demands for reform. It soon became clear, however, that Nicholas and his government had no intention of making good on this agreement. Popular discontent and radical political movements were harshly repressed. While these policies were successful for a time, the government's inept conduct during the First World War created an enormous surge of dissent. The critical turning point came in February of 1917, when the underfed, poorly led, and discontented army refused to act to put down strikes in Moscow and St. Petersburg and called for an end to the war. By March, Nicholas had no choice but to abdicate. A provisional government assumed control under the leadership of the moderates, first Prince Lvov, then (in July) Aleksandr Kerensky. From its seat in the Winter Palace, the Kerensky government tried and failed to gain popular support and restore civil order. Among the socialist anti-government parties, the radical Bolshevik wing gradually gained strength among the increasingly impatient army and workers. Within a few months the Bolsheviks decided to assume power. On the night of October 26 they staged an armed coup d'etat, storming across the Palace Square and seizing the Provisional Government as it met within the Winter Palace. Although the storming of the Winter Palace was by no means the massive popular uprising that it was to become in the Bolshevik commemorations and in Sergei Eisenstein's film October, it was certainly the moment of symbolic birth of the Soviet state.

Entertainments Excursion to the Sheremetev Castle In the place where the Volga river flows into the great Volga river, on the border between the Nizhni Novgorod region and the Republic of Mari El the village of Yurino (former Arkhangelskoye) is situated. This is where a unique castle, the epistle of Yurino, may be found. They call it the pearl of the Volga. In 1850 the possession of the estate was taken by V.P.Sheremetev who was married to the St. Petersburg's beauty O.D.Skobeleva, a sister of the well-known Russian commander M.D.Skobelev. V.P.Shcremetev decided to build a castle in Arkhangelskoye. The Russian and German architects R.Muller, A.Parland, Yakov Mamontov and Pave! Malinovskiy designed the castle. The immense castle was erected by craftsmen from the Yurino village. An Italian, Yermi Kristofoli, was invited to make the inlaid doors. The castle architecture in-cludes various features from different styles, and the influence of Gothic, Oriental, Romanic and old Russian styles can be seen there as well. The magnificent building is built of red and black bricks; white stone details effectively stand out against the black and red background. There is a large balcony above the front entrance, which rests on four white stone columns. The Southern entrance leads to the winter garden and a glass cupola rises on an enormous ring, which is supported by seven columns. Such a large winter garden built into the castle is a very uncommon feature. There were almost a hundred rooms in the castle. "The Picture Gallery", "The Oriental Study", "Tlic Oak Room", "Skobelev's Hall" are among them. The canvases of great painters such as El Grcko, Luke Laidensky, Yan Brcgcl Barkhalny, , K.P.Brullov and many other pieces of art testify to the fact that the collection of pictures was unique.
