Some belong to castles and great estates, others are associated with universities and scientific institutions. The great baroque castles, which have disappeared in many other countries, still retain their original garden styles. Old Gothic structures, remodeled many times over the centuries, are surrounded by vast parklands modeled after the great English landscape gardens. The tour will combine visits to some of the greatest and most beautiful places in the country. Special excursions such as tasting of delicious Moravian wines or private concerts of classical or folk music add our tours special taste.

Architecture
The architecture of the cities of Lithuania is like a mirror which contains a reflection of our history. The brick and walled castles of the Middle Ages comprise the oldest surviving monuments of Lithuanian architecture, attesting to the austere periods of the founding of the state. From the 14th century onwards, architecture began to be shaped by European traditions. All the styles of Europe, one after the other, reached the country, sometimes belatedly. In the 14th century, there was the early Gothic style, exemplified by the castle of the rulers in Trakai. In the 15th century, the late Gothic style marked the Church of St. Anne in Vilnius. (This was the church Napoleon admired so much that he wanted to see it relocated in Paris). During the Renaissance Period of the 16th century, cities began to be constructed according to a formal plan and structure. The Rulers' Palace of the Lower Castle in Vilnius (presently under reconstruction) dates from this period. The Baroque style took hold in Lithuania in the 17th century, and produced a vast number of masterpieces. The Baroko Kelias (Baroque Way), established throughout Lithuania in 1996 under the auspices of the Council of Europe, touched only a part of the treasure trove. Vilnius is sometimes alluded to as the Baroque capital of the entire region.

Architecture can be a building, a house, a bridge, a castle, a whole city. Designing a Building: If you want to design and plan a building, there are many things you have to think about: Function, site, form and materials. What is Architecture? Architecture occupies a similar place in human consciousness; the configuration and manipulation of materials to enclose and control empty space is universal to all human cultures. Not only that, human "building" pervades every aspect of the human world in the same way language does. From the most crowded, modern urban areas to small, isolated communities of hunter-gatherer tribes, human life constantly encounters, builds, and modifies human arrangement of space. Becoming an Architect To be an architect requires a special range of qualifications - design talent, engineering ability, social awareness, business aptitude, legal knowledge, etc. This site gives you some indication of the scope of a career in architecture. If you want more information on how you might become involved, refer to the reverse side where some specific questions are answered that may help you in making your decision. Architecture Australia
July-August, 2003 by Naomi Stead
AT ONE POINT DURING a wide-ranging conversation, gathered around the very convivial breakfast table of Peter Tonkin and Ellen Woolley's new Lilyfield House, Tonkin described the work as "a funny little brutalist castle". This affectionate description is apt indeed, and serves well here as an entry point for placing the work in a wider historical and theoretical context. There are many other interesting aspects that could be pursuedthe process and dynamic of two architects designing their own house together is clearly fascinating, as is the relationship between this and the same architects' earlier Killcare Housebut those will have to be other stories for another time. Given that, in this case, the "painting" is thickened and given form. Picked out in monochrome bricks rather than applied to the surface, the image itself becomes an architectural material. This image/wall becomes both a screen and an "enigmatic billboard", both a gift and a deflection to passers-by. The house thus begins a complex, if quiet, interplay between material and image, object and experience. It reinterprets the classic. Brutalist strategy of roughening the skin of the object in order to point to its material. This "thingness" or object character is also revealed particularly acutely at one other point: in the library on the entry level a wall of glass faces directly, and closely, onto a huge sandstone boulder. It is as though the solidity, massiveness, and sheer crude materiality of the rock comes face to face with the more refined, but still tough and rugged work of architecture, and they share a wink of mutual recognition.

The war beetween Hittite and Egypt in this period had affected Cyprus as well. The architecture of the castle resembles the styles of those constructed by the Hittites in Anatolia. It is four sided and the entrance and the walls have been fortified with towers. Big ashlars have been used in its construction. It has a courtyard in the middle.

http://www.crowcanyon.org/researchreports/castlerock/text/crpw_architecture.htm
Architecture by Kristin A. Kuckelman Chapter Contents
The villagers of Castle Rock Pueblo constructed a substantial number of buildings. All structures observed at the site were built of sandstone masonry. Remnants of buildings were found around the base of Castle Rock butte, on top of at least one large boulder, on a ledge midway up the north face of the butte, and on top of the butte. I estimate that at least 16 kivas , 40 rooms, nine possible towers, a D-shaped enclosure, two dams and associated reservoirs, two possible plazas , and numerous enclosing and retaining walls were constructed. Archaeologists study architectural remains in order to learn what types of buildings were constructed, how the different buildings were used, and how many people lived at a site (see " Population Estimates "). In this section, I discuss the types and uses of various buildings observed at Castle Rock, including rooms, kivas, towers, public architecture, and defensive architecture. In " Settlement Organization ", I discuss how the village and the people who lived in it were organized.
Accurately estimating the number of structures originally present at Castle Rock is a difficult task, especially for the top of the butte and the southern portion of the site. Historic documents (

http://www.moec.gov.cy/CCP/greek/project21.htm
Restoration Project of the Castle of Cesvaine Cesvaine is situated in the South of Vidzeme, 180 km far from Riga – capital city in Republic of Latvia. The name of the town is created from six roads which cross here — Sechswegen (German). Going from Madona to Gulbene you can see the “Cesvaine s towers” greeting from the hill at a distance. The Cesvaine castle, occasionally referred to as the Cesvaine manor house, was built between 1894 and 1896 on the site of the 14th-century castle of the Archbishop of Riga, which was destroyed in 1577. In addition to being an outstanding example of Eclectic architecture, it is a monument with cultural and historical significance and much notable artwork. The building was commissioned by Adolf Gerhard Boris Emil von Wulf and designed by the German architects Hans Griesebach and August Dinklage. This unique work of art is the product of the architects' creativity and the abilities of highly skilled local craftsmen. The walls are made of split granite fieldstones, which are found locally. The rough-hewn surfaces of the walls and the smoothly worked stones of the architectonic details contrast natural and man-made beauty.

Early Ages (IX-XV) The political organization of tribes (Slavic, Lithuanian) living on the territory of current Belarus has started around VII-VIII c. The first cities appeared in IX-X cc as castles and fortresses that were built to protect nearby population from the military invasions. Most of the towns have appeared in the North, North-Western part of Belarus: Polacak Viciebsk , Lukoml', Miensk , Ors^a, Druck, Zaslaue , Lahoisk, Braslau , S^klou, Navahrudak Vaukavysk . Turau was the only big town in the South at that time. The number of towns has grown sharply during XI-XII cc. owing to development of crafts and economy. Most of the towns were founded on the banks of the rivers or lakes. On one hand it allowed easier transportation by boats. On another hand this made castles less accessible and was a strategic military advantage. More than 40 towns has emerged in Belarusian lands during IX-XIII cc. In the North towns were emerging mainly as fortresses whose primary function was to protect surrounding population against military dangers. In the swampy and almost impenetrable South towns were appearing mostly as the centers of trade, craftsmanship and service of the population of surrounding lands (except Turau and
