The Castle of the Counts in Ghent is one of the most impressive remaining examples of defensive architecture. Built to defend against Viking attacks in the ninth century, it was significantly expanded c. 1180-1200, with additions in the fourteenth century. A massive wall and gate encircle the castle keep. The enclosed area of the castle fortifications is one acre, contained within an oval wall of about 200 by 150 feet. It contains residences for the count, his servants and guards, as well as dungeons. The central three story "donjon" is the oldest of its kind in western Europe.66 The rooms measure 33' by 90', and it has 7' thick walls. Improvements in catapults in about 1200 necessitated higher walls for the exterior defensive ring. The castle was restored 1894-1914. photos and text by J. Howe

Beersel Beersel Vorselaer, near Antwerp Vorselaer The castle De Borrekens at Vorselaar (near Herenthals) is a splendid example of a medieval castle from the thirteenth century which was rebuilt in a neo-Gothic style in the nineteenth century, between 1866-1884. In the thirteenth century, it belonged to the Van Rotselaar family, who were stewards of the Dukes of Brabant. Surrounded by a moat, and guarded by fortified towers at the entrance, it is powerfully evocative of the late middle ages. The castle is still privately owned. Veves, near Dinant, 15th-16th centuries. Veves The castle of Veves near Dinant was the home of the Lords of Beaufort. It possesses a dramatic site above its village. The castle is much restored, including the towers. The interior features a handsome half-timbered courtyard from the seventeenth century. Fact File Leuven You won't be able to resist a pint or two during a visit to the university city of Leuven As the headquarters of the Stella Artois brewery, it has earned the title of beer capital of Belgium and several breweries are open to visitors keen to learn more about beer-making techniques both old and new. Leuven is also famous for its Catholic university. It was founded in 1425 and had gained such a reputation by the 16th century that it was deemed one of Europe's leading seats of learning. It is still the largest university in Belgium, with some 25,000 students based in several noteworthy buildings scattered throughout the city. Since Leuven is not a huge city it is easy to see it all on foot, particularly as many areas are pedestrianised. Statues and paintings The Grote Markt is one of the chief attractions and is surrounded by flamboyant buildings. They include the Gothic-styled Stadhuis with its exterior terraced turrets, fancy stonework and lavish interior displaying more than 200 statues and paintings by many famous artists. The Sint Pieterskerk, the oldest church in Leuven, is impressive. Beloeil In any language this is a palace! A magnificent house in large grounds it has been the home of the Princes de Ligne since the 14th century, and the castle and gardens were already famous in the 17th century. The resent castle was built by Claire Marie of Nassau, Princess of Ligne, assisted by her son Henry, built the castle in 1680.Although inspired by French architecture the plan still shows some medieval influences with the four towers reminding one of earlier fortresses. The family has been prominent in Europe for hundreds of years and has had many distinguished members throughout these centuries. There was a disastrous fire on 14th December 1900 which destroyed most of the central building but heroic efforts by members of the family and the local villagers saved most of the art collection. The story of the family is told in the superb collection of paintings, sculpture and memorabilia which are displayed throughout the house and it needs at least an hour to do justice to the collection. After visiting the house it is essential to explore the gardens. Immediately outside the house is a magnificent lake which stretches away into the distance. The grounds are so extensive that there is a small 'train' which takes visitors through them. If you choose to walk through them you pass from one garden to another through high hedges many of these gardens have small ponds within them. It almost gives one an Alice in Wonderland feeling as you explore.
