Bad Gastein
This famous health spa, casino and ski area, much of which dates back to the 1500s, is set in the spectacular Gastein Valley. From the train station, the town plunges into a steep valley with church spires and rustic lodges stacked one on top of the other and wooded peaks arranged overhead. Although the town is overbuilt, it is still easy to see why it has attracted such famous guests as Schubert, Constanze Mozart (the composer's wife), Kaiser Wilhelm and Emperor Franz Josef. Winter activities include excellent skiing, tobogganing and horse-drawn sleigh rides; summertime attractions include hiking and horseback riding. There's good shopping year-round. Bad Hofgastein , just down the valley, also offers nice scenery and spas. It is quieter and not as well known: We find it more relaxing than Bad Gastein.

Vienna
Vienna's history goes way back to Roman times. Like many cities throughout Europe, it is based on a Roman military settlement called Vindobona. After the decline of the Roman Empire, the remains of this camp developed town under the reign of the Babenberger dynasty. In 1492 it became the seat and capital of the Habsburger's Holy Roman Empire and started growing to the big city it is today.
Nowadays Vienna is the capital of the Austrian Republic, the seat of the government, home to about 1,7 million people and working place for even more residents from around the area.
Vienna is a traditional melting pot for what used to be a multinational empire during the Habsburg monarchy. The immigration of Hungarians, Czechs and Polish people left its influence everywhere, especially on the surnames of many Viennese inhabitants.
Vienna is not only the political, but also the cultural capital of Austria. It offers a wide variety of theater, music, art and cinemas and the cultural tradition of the high art is well known worldwide. Vienna has been home to many famous musicians, like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Hayden, Ludwig van Beethoven and Falco. It is still a very popular stop and living place for artist from around the world.

Austria, Germany and Switzerland
Mischa, Scott and I decided that it was time to head to Europe. None of us had been before, so we each made a list of countries we wanted to go to. We then prioritized them and compared notes. Austria, Germany and Switzerland came out the winners, so that's where we headed. Mischa actually spent a good 6 months or so galavanting around much more of Europe, but Scott and I met up with him for 2 weeks of meat and potatoes, castles, architecture, the Alps and cows.

Rural Architectural Heritage at Risk
With respect to ‘heritage at risk’ there are extraordinary monuments singled-out, for which it seems to be easier to awaken international interest regarding their fate. Yet there are a great many and a great variety of monuments typical of their region and past life-style, which are also special but not often recognised and sometimes not given any thought. Max Dvorak’s Prophecy in the 1918 ‘Katechismus der Denkmalpflege’, stating that the simple often needs more protection than the important, is also relevant for this major field of cultural heritage today. In other words: the culturally non-spectacular and seemingly normal has been lost, although it is of great value for exactly the same reason as more ‘impressive’ monuments.
Every country has its cultural idiosyncrasies from which those that remain most often are either museum-like clichés or those employed by tourism.
In terms of cultural capital, it is Austria’s variety in landscape which assumes a primary role: from Lake Neusiedl in the panonic plains of the east, across the ridges of the Alps to Lake Constance in the west, and from the hills of Bohemia in the north to the connections with the Mediterranean south. This variety of cultural landscapes is especially shaped by its architectural heritage, mostly by the structures connected with rural life. The latter, in their rich differentiation, are particularly endangered as an entire category in Austria: from the typical houses located around the region of Bregenz in Vorarlberg (Bregenzerwaldhaus) to the varieties of alpine farm houses; from the beautiful three- and four-sided farm houses located in the central regions to the arcades in Burgenland. Wood and clay structures are the most endangered, as well as those belonging to the greater area of the farm house, including structures of past-agricultural practice and methods.

Burgenland Durnstein Eisenstadt ... Ybbstal Vienna is one of the great cities of Europe, the crossroads between the east and west of the continent. You get a real feel of the east here, yet the city has been home to many of western Europe's greats. Wandering the streets, admiring the stately buildings, and stopping for the occasional cofee and cake, would keep you busy for days. Some of Europe's major museums and galleries are in Vienna, and then there are the walks in the Viennese woods, and maybe a visit to the funfair with its giant Ferris Wheel. The centre of the city is compact enough to be explored on foot, or you can use the very efficient transport system comprising buses, trams and underground (U-Bahn). Make sure you have a good guide book and get the most out of your visit to this wonderful city.

Bike Rating: Excellent Nature of the Ride: The Danube River ( Donau in German) flows from its source at Donaueschingen in the Black Forest of Germany, to the Black Sea, 2900 kilometers (1,700 miles) downstream. Serbia and Romania are not considered safe for western bikers, on and off the road. In Germany and in Hungary, many bikers do follow the Danube . However, by far the most popular section for biking is the Austrian Danube between Passau, Germany (on the Austrian border) and Vienna, a total distance of 340 kilometers (~200 miles). The reasons for this popularity lies in a great concentration of tourist sights, with new variety for each day of a ride; and in the presence of wide bike paths (or very minor roads) that keep cyclists apart from traffic, usually right alongside the river. (Whereas, in Germany one often rides on roads and in Hungary, on roads and on highways.) Also, in case of bad weather, river steamers provide a painless way to continue a journey. The Danube bike route is excellent for families with children, and attracts many families. The way is

The Bummerlhaus is the symbol of Steyr.
Situated on Steyr’s downtown square, the Bummerlhaus is the best preserved secular building in the province. Parts of the building date back to the 13th century. In the 19th century, the structure housed the "Zum Goldenen Löwen" ("To the Golden Lion") Inn. The Lion, which can still be seen on the signboard, was lovingly dubbed "Bummerl" by the residents, meaning ‘little plump dog’. Thus the Inn was given the name "Bummerlhaus". The inner courtyard with its magnificent arcades and columns is definitely worth visiting.

The Hapsburg dynasty was influential in Central Europe from the 10th century. As Holy Roman Emperors they controlled an Empire which at its mediaeval zenith covered huge tracts of Europe stretching from Spain and the Netherlands to the Black Sea. The great cities of the Hapsburgs were the golden trio of Vienna, Prague and Budapest, which influenced not only the body politic but also the awesome outpouring of creativity from composers such as Mozart, Hayden, Liszt and Dvorak to Smetena, Bartok and Janacek. We also view the great art works held in these cities with paintings by Da Vinci and Breugel, the Expressionists and Klimt. We do not overlook the great architectural heritage of these cities. Prague is considered the stone jewel in the Hapsburg crown with its stunning range of architecture, which is UNESCO protected. The great Neo-Gothic buildings of Budapest and Neo-Classical splendours of Vienna are also explored. We explore the artistic and musical heritage of neighbouring Poland whose Chopin would certainly rate among the musical greats. The art and architecture of Krakow is regarded as being amongst the best in Europe.

Austria's Links to the Habsburg Dynasty In 1273, Count Rudolf of the Habsburg family, a Swiss nobleman, was elected King of Germany. Within a decade, Rudolf secured the agreement of the Imperial Diet and the Prince Electors for the formal acceptance of his sons Albert and Rudolf to preside over Austria and Styria. This confirmed Habsburg rule in Austria. For the next 640 years, from 1278 to 1918, the Habsburgs reigned over a territory that grew from a small section of Austria along the Danube, into the 16th century realm of Charles V who could boast that "The sun never sets on my domain." He was referring to lands that stretched from Northwestern Europe to the Mediterranean and across the Atlantic to Central America. The Habsburg style of empire building was a remarkable early application of the philosophy "Make love, not war!" Expansion was accomplished by shrewd marriages, not by the sword. Wars were avoided at all costs - except for defensive struggles to keep other rulers from taking over far-flung possessions. As sovereigns of the Holy Roman Empire through the centuries, the Habsburgs made much of European history and exerted a degree of influence on the Americas as well. No other royal line on the continent lasted so long, left its mark on so many centuries, or so many countries as the Habsburgs. Their Golden Ages were also high points in the cultural, artistic, and scholarly development of Europe.

Traveling through Upper Austria the traveler has the chance to experience a variety of cultural traditions dating back centuries. If you are interested in museums, the country is home to well over 250 excellent choices. Austria is dotted with an incredible number of architectural wonders. The buildings range from monasteries to churches, palaces to castles, to quaint old buildings. Even the more modern buildings are architectural interesting and inspiring. It is worth noting that the despite the small size of the country, the influence of their architecture has touched many other countries. Of recent interest are the many monasteries dotting the country. The impact of these institutions over the centuries cannot be understated. Today many of these monasteries are opening their doors to the general public. In Austria if you have the chance stop by to visit a few, it will be an interesting experience. When people think of Austria many envision a castle overlooking the mighty Danube. In one respect that is an accurate impression. It is not hard to come across one of these relics of the past as you travel through the countryside. Interestingly one of the provinces of Austria, Burgenland actually means "land of the castles".

Hotel Imperial , Kaerntner Ring 16, A-1015 Vienna, Austria.
The Hotel Imperial, one of the most beautiful examples of the 19th-century Viennese architecture, is situated directly at the Ringstrasse, the most splendid boulevard of the city.
The Hotel Imperial is located in the heart of Vienna. For more than a century, this architectural landmark and symbol of hospitality has received the city's most distinguished visitors. The Hotel Imperial is an original Wuerttemberg palace and represents the first house of the Republic of Austria as the official residence for state visits. Inaugurated personally in 1873 by Emperor Franz Josef I, the hotel is a synonym for hospitality and high quality. It is the only hotel in all German-speaking countries to offer a traditional butler service in all double rooms and suites. In the St. Regis hotel in New York or in London, for example, specially trained butlers anticipate the guests every wish. For guests paying the full price a butler will offer his services for free.
Richly appointed guest rooms, exceptional service, and the outstanding Restaurant Imperial make the Hotel Imperial an unparalleled luxury experience.

Assignment: Describe an activity, interest, experience, or achievement in
your life (this could be a book, movie, or an activity or
experience at work, home, or school) that has been particularly
meaningful to you. Length: 250-500 words
Questions or Concerns: Am I focused enough on the topic? Do I elaborate enough on how
the experience changed my life? Do I completely answer the
prompt? Submitted Document: “Guten morgen!” Or, if you’re reading this in the afternoon, “Guten haben!” If you haven’t already guessed, the experience that has changed my life was a trip to Germany and Austria. This experience was momentous for me because it has shaped the direction of my life by exposing me to architecture not available in Southwest Florida, and making me choose architecture or engineering as a career.
What can I say about Europe that has not already been told (and much more eloquently) in countless poems, tales, and writings? Nothing in my mind can compare to the St. Stephans Cathedral in Vienna, Austria. A single spire from the church is 445 feet tall, a peak incomprehensible to a girl who lives in an area where the tallest buildings are a mere 15 stories high. The Gothic architecture and the minute details associated with it have made me realize the infinite possibilities architecture provides. You can have a massive building capable of surviving hundreds of years as well as World War II, and still have it equipped with such delicate details as hundreds of stained glass panels or chiseled gargoyles.
