    KYNZVART CASTLE
In 1820-1833, an elder Baroque structure dating back to the late 17 th century was rebuilt by the Viennese architect Pietro Nobile for the Austrian Chancellor Clement Wenzel Lothar, Prince of Metternich-Winneburg . Sensitively set into a vast natural landscape park, the castle is a rare example of rural representative residence, built in the style of Viennese Classicism and French Imperial architecture. Prince Metternich (1773-1859), who served as Austria's State Chencellor, was a leading figure within the European political scene of the first half of the 19 th century. During his life, the Kynzvart Castle experienced extensive gathering of artworks (collections of coins, medals, porcelain, weapons, as well as the Chencellor's well-known library containing unique manuscripts and incunabula).
    HISTORICAL EVOLUTION AND EXPOSITIONS
The citadel, whose ruins are up-to-now visible above the town of Lazne (Spa) Kynzvart , was built somewhere around the middle of 13th century. By the end of 16th century a Renaissance building was built in the valley in the area of this very Castle. In 1630 the manor of Kynzvart was then sold to the House of Metternich, who thus owned the Kynzvart Castle from 1630 up to 1945. In 1681 to 1691 the Renaissance structure was rebuilt into a baroque Castle. It was built in the eighties of the 17 th century, when Count Philip Emerich Metternich had in the stead of the Renaissance citadel a baroque castle raised. The Castle after its Empire reconstruction carried out for Chancellor Metternich from 1821 to 1833 by Petro Nobile, an architect of Italian origin.

Europe's Nine Most Medieval Castle Experiences
Castles excite Americans. Medieval fortresses are rotting away on hilltops from Ireland to Israel, from Sweden to Spain, lining the Loire and guarding harbors throughout the Mediterranean. From the west coast of Portugal to the crusader city of Rhodes, you'll find castle thrills lurking in every direction. Most of Europe's castles have been discovered, but some are forgotten, unblemished by entrance fees, postcard racks, and coffee shops, and ignored by guidebooks. Since they're free, nobody promotes them. The aggressive traveler finds them by tapping local sources, such as the town tourist office and the friendly manager of your hotel or pension. Stroll inside the ramparts to see what life was really like in those places your bedtime fairy tales reserved for fairy princesses and Prince Charmings. Life in the Middle Ages was actually a lot like the people: nasty, brutish and short. In cities there was some measure of safety and security, but the countryside was the domain of outlaw bands of “merry men,” who invaded farms and villages to fill their pockets and satisfy their thirst for violence. In those days, the difference between robbers and armies was only a matter of “how big.” Europe's Best Castles

Adolf Loos was an architect who became more famous for his ideas than for his buildings. He believed that reason should determine the way we build, and he opposed the decorative Art Nouveau movement. In and other essays, Loos described the suppression of decoration as necessary for regulating passion. Adolf Loos was born to a stonemason in Czechoslovakia, but to his mother's grief he refused to continue the family business. Instead, he studied architecture in Dresden and then went to the United States, where he worked as a mason, a floor-layer, and a dishwasher. Loos was impressed by the efficiency of American architecture, and he admired the work of Louis Sullivan Eventually Loos found work with the architect Carl Mayreder, and in 1898 he opened his own practice in Vienna. He earned little money, but he lived comfortably because his customers often paid their fee with goods. He also started his own school of architecture, and taught the

    Burg Forchtenstein:
    The Castle

    Continued from page 2
    About Forchtenstein Castle:
I passed the heights of the Rosaliengebirge, a breeze on the lower slopes stirring the leaves to an undulant sea of color. As far as I could see, orchards stretched away. Orderly rows of cherry trees in full bloom, the paper-white petals etched against a webbing of crisp black branches, diminished in the distance. Apricot and peach trees tossed plumes of pale and deeper pink. Nature, I observed, had strewn color with a prodigious sweep. Swathes of flowering purple sage and wild blue lupins formed a background to the flowering fruit trees. From far off in the plain I could see the Castle of Forchtenstein, its high piled walls and towers shining pale yellow and russet under the crisp black of inky-black tile roofs. This province of Burgenland owes its name"The Land of Castles"to its number of ancient castles. Many of them stem from 11th and 12th century fortresses, while others, like the great Esterházy Palace at Eisenstadt, is a resounding example of Austrian Baroque architecture.

    Castles and Palaces
Although the terms castle and palace have been used interchangeably for centuries, there are in fact distinctions which separate the two types of structures. A castle is a fortified building whose primary purpose is to provide security or defend a territory from one's enemies. A palace, in contrast, is a building whose primary function is that of a luxurious and often eccentric abode. Palaces predate castles by several centuries, with their first appearance being in the Egyptian and Middle Eastern civilizations of ancient history. Although castles are no longer recognized as a means of security from foes, palaces will continue to be built as long as there are people who can afford them. The links included herein relate to castles and palaces. Get more exposure, list your site

(Original map comes from the CIA World Factbook Introduction It's hard not to like Austria. It is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, populated by one of the most cultured people in the world. Once the seat of the most progressive of the 19th Century empires, Austria still celebrates its hey-day as the home of Mozart and many other great artists and musicians. The entire country is one big photo opportunity waiting to happen. The Alps dominate, but even the lower lands to the north are mountainous and picturesque. Steep river valleys about everywhere, and nearly every town and hamlet has a ski resort or cross-country ski track. The Austro-Hungarian Empire was known for its big and gorgeous castles, particularly the white ones (like the Hohensalzburg) that we Americans often envision in our fairy tales. Tourists and businessmen alike will find Austria as I have clean, friendly, safe, and town proud. It's transportation and communication services are among the best I've used. Austrian cuisine is similar to Bavarian cuisine, but generally better. Some of the finest, and least expensive, guesthouses I and my colleagues have stayed in were Austrian.
