cartography and Geographic Information Systems. Resources for cartography, GIS, and remote sensing, U. Wisc. Stevens Point, Dept. of geography/Geology.
http://www.ics.uci.edu/~eppstein/gina/carto.html
Cartography and Geographic Information Systems A geographic information system (GIS) is simply a database of information about natural and man-made geographic features such as roads, buildings, mountains... These systems can be used for making maps, but also for analyzing data e.g. for facility location. There has been some communication between the geometry and GIS communities (e.g. geographer Michael Goodchild gave an invited lecture on "Computational Geography" at the 11th ACM Symp. Comp. Geom. ) but more could be done to bring them together. Geographic problems already visible in the geometry community include interpolation of surfaces from scattered data , overlaying planar subdivisions, hierarchical representations of terrain information, boundary simplification, lossy compression of elevation data (e.g. by using a piecewise linear approximation with few facets), and map labelling. Other interesting geometric issues include handling of approximate and inconsistent data, matching similar features from different databases, compression of large geographic databases, cooperation between raster and vector representations, visibility analysis, and generation of cartograms (maps with area distorted to represent other information such as population). A particularly important geometric data structure in geographic analysis is the Voronoi diagram , which has been used for to identify regions of influence of clans and other population centers, model plant and animal competition, piece together satellite photographs, estimate ore reserves, perform marketing analysis, and estimate rainfall.

The European Voyages of Exploration In the early period of European exploration, captains had rudimentary navigation techniques and a fairly detailed set of Mediterranean portolanos ( charts) showing the bodies of water, landmasses, and ports. These charts were not drawn to a grid system of degrees, but were based on compass findings and estimated distances. From this point of view, cartography was very similar to early astronomy in that the product was paradoxically the result of both scientific and metaphysical endeavours. Some astronomers were attracted to the study of stars because of their interest in astrology. The same is true of cartographers whose main purpose was not to discover what actually existed but, rather, to rationalise the world around preconceived notions of religion and philosophy. Ptolemaic Style Map 1432 Nevertheless, it is possible to make a few general statements about the practice of cartography. If it is possible to identify one great influence, it would undoubtedly be that of Claudius Ptolemaeus, or Ptolemy, (130 C.E.) and the Arab geographers who followed. In 151 C.E., Ptolemy published a work on map-making called Geographia From this intellectual heritage sprang the twin tendencies of medieval European geographers and cartographers to create maps that were, generally speaking, either fanciful or factual. On the one hand, there was a tendency to construct a symmetrically perfect design of God's creation that also incorporated the metaphysical beliefs of Europe. For example, the Psalter Map of the thirteenth century depicted a world with Christ at the top and dragons crushed beneath him at the bottom. Furthermore, in the Psalter Map, Jerusalem was the centre of the world, and legends and myths were inscribed in places instead of geographical data, thus effectively blending fact and fantasy.

Research Interests
I am interested in geographic information science and cartography. My work has been primarily in the area of quantitative mapping and the psychology of maps. Subjects of publications have included: map complexity, two-variable maps, the use of color in mapping, designing maps for people with defective color vision, and multimedia in geography. I have enjoyed working with classes on special projects including the development of a tactile map of the MSU campus (for use with the Nomad), production of a prototype CD-ROM, development of web products, construction of full-color paper maps, and building our local knowledge of high tech presentation graphics.

MAPPING SCIENCES AT UW-RF? GEOGRAPHY is a field that uses an interdisciplinary approach to understand patterns of human activity and natural processes on the surface of the earth. Geographers are often called upon to analyze and solve problems that deal with interactions between people and the environment. Geography appeals to students who have a wide range of interests that involve human activities and their impacts on the natural environment. MAPPING SCIENCES are a set of techniques that include Cartography (the art and science of map making), GIS - Geographic Information Systems (the analysis of spatial patterns), and Remote Sensing (the analysis of satellite imagery). These techniques are useful in displaying, understanding, and analyzing spatial relationships. Many other disciplines, such as biology, business, marketing, criminal justice, land use planning, and urban studies utilize mapping techniques.
Studying geography and mapping sciences at UWRF provides the skills to engage in a variety of careers. Through a combination of coursework and internships students gain first hand experience in geographic analysis. The use of computer technologies, through GIS and mapping, are areas where students may develop additional expertise. The department offers a Major and a Minor in Geography, a Minor in Geographic Information Systems and Cartography, and a Major in Broad Field Social Studies (Geography)/Education.

Prior to 2000, it was known as the Cartographic Services Laboratory.
Professional publication quality maps and graphics are compiled, designed, and produced in the laboratory's facilities as per client specifications, using the latest desktop mapping and illustration software, technology, and equipment (PC and MAC). The Center also creates geographic and attribute files for analysis with Geographic Information Systems.
Services available include file translation to and from PC and Macintosh files; scanning; digitizing; map design and layout; presentation slides; graphics from spreadsheets; color and black/white prints; GIS files.
The Center is located in Bolton Hall 420 and is open Monday
