Cartier (Click on it to see more pictures) Born in the seaport of Saint-Malo in 1491 to Jamet Cartier and Geseline Jansart, Jacques Cartier was a French explorer and mariner. Leading the first European expedition up the St. Lawrence River, his explorations are the basis for France's claims to land in what is now Canada. At Dieppe, a French center for navigators, Cartier studied navigation, and he may also have sailed to Newfoundland with a fishing crew in the early 1500's. It was believed that he was with Giovanni da Verrazzano, an Italian navigator, on expeditions to the New World during the 1520's. When Cartier was growing up in France, during the early sixteenth century, Europeans thought that Asia could be reached by sailing across the Atlantic to the West. Columbus thought he had reached the East Indies when he found land in 1492, while John Cabot thought he had reached Asia when he touched the mainland of America in 1497. As other voyages were made westward and more and more fishermen went to the Grand Banks off Newfoundland, the Europeans started to believe that if the land mass was not Asia, a route might be found through it that would lead to the riches of the East. The Spanish sailors and Portuguese mariners were discovering and conquering the islands of the Caribbean and the lands of Central and South America, and England was sending out searchers for the Northwest Passage. Although they would eventually claim most of North America, the French were the last major seafaring power of Europe to take a significant interest in the New World. It all began to change in 1524, when King Francis I of France sent Giovanni da Verrazano in search of a Northwest passage to Asia. Verrazano was a Tuscan noble by birth and, in the words of historian Lawrence Wroth, "a well educated, imaginative, and aggressive seaman". Although he failed to find a northwest passage, because no such passage exists at the latitudes where he was looking, Verrazano did explore the North American coastline from Nova Scotia to the Carolinas.

After the students have talked about all the items in the box, explain to the class that you are beginning a unit on explorers. Begin a KWL chart either on an enlarged ship model with K, W, and L on each sail or on just a chart. Elicit responses from students about what they already know about explorers and write them on the K part of the ship or chart. Then have them give responses about what they would like to learn on the W part of the ship or chart. Post this chart or ship up for the entire unit. - As a group, decide which characteristics are important for a good explorer to have. Have one student be the recorder and list them on a piece of paper.
