Turkish Carpets
Carpets, whether knotted or flat woven (kilim) are among the best known art forms produced by the Turks from time immemorial. There are environmental, sociological, economic, and religious reasons for the widespread art of carpet weaving among the Turkish people from Central Asia to Turkey. The geographical regions where Turks have lived throughout thecenturies lie in the temperate zone. Temperature fluctuations between day and night, summer and winter may vary greatly. Turks-nomadicor pastoral, agrarian or town-dwellers, living in tents or in sumptuous houses in large cities-have protected themselves from the extremes of the cold weather by covering the floors, and sometimes walls and doorways, with carpets. The carpets are always hand made of wool or sometimes cotton, with occasional additions of silk. These carpets are natural barriers against the cold. The flat woven kilims which are frequently embroidered are used as blankets, curtains, and covers over sofas or as cushion covers. In general, Turks take their shoes off upon entering a house. Thus, the dust and dirt of the outdoors are not tracked inside. The floor coverings remain clean, and the inhabitants of the house, if need be, can comfortably rest on the floor. In the traditional households, women and girls take up carpet and kilim weaving as a hobby as well as a means of earning money. Even technological advances which promoted factory-made carpets could not hamper the production of rug weaving at cottage-industry level. Although synthetic dyes have been in use for the last 150 years, hand made carpets are still considered far superior to industrial carpeting.

Welcome to the Gates of Morocco, where we specialize in unique and hard to find objects and artifacts from Morocco as well as from all around the Sub-Saharran. Gates of Morocco, formerly known as Bazaar Tangier, was founded in 1986 and specializes in hand crafted Moroccan goods and Subsaharan African sculptures and masks. Morocco has a rich tradition of artisan work dating back to the middle ages. We are continuing that tradition by carrying crafts from different tribes in Morocco, such as the Berber, Twarag, Nomad and Bedwin. These crafts include mosaics, brass and tile work, ceramics, woodworking, weaving and carpet making. In addition the owner, Abdellatif Bennani, has had 20 years of experience in Moroccan artisan work. He uses Moroccan traditions and incorporates them into modern designs, such as henna lamps produced especially for Gates of Morocco. Items carried by Gates of Morocco include: tea glasses and pots, brass trays and lamps, carpets, small tables, Moroccan Jewish collectables, wall hangings, Moroccan style cloths and shoes, jewelry, beads, henna lamps, henna tattoo kits and Subsaharan masks and sculptures.

Older rugs (over 100 years old) are mainly of interest to the specialist collector. More recently-made rugs and carpets are chiefly of interest to the decorative buyer. Materials Knots Carpet Care The only difference between a rug and a carpet is size. Rugs are usually small enough to hand on the wall - up to approximately 2m/6ft long - anything larger is usually referred to as a carpet. Most rugs are categorized by their place of origin or the tribe who made them. To be able to identify the difference between, say, a Kazak and a Kuba, you need to familiarize yourself with the various distinctive colours, patterns, motifs and weaves characteristic of each type. The size, richness of the colours, fineness of the knots, intricacy of design and condition are all important when valuing an antique rug. Collectable rugs should be hand-made. To check, look on the reverse - you should be able to see the design on the back as well as on the front. Next, part the pile and look at the knots, if there are loops rather than knots this indicates a machine-made rug of very little interest to collectors. Many types of antique rug cost little more than modern replicas. Woven Kelims and Soumacs can be found for around £300. Introduction Persian Rugs European Rugs Buying rugs ... Priceguide - carpets The foundation material of a rug (the warp and weft) is usually wool, cotton, or (rarely) silk. The best quality wool is fine, soft and shiny. Inferior quality wool is coarse and lacks lustre.

Under the Ottoman Safavid , and Mughal dynasties, carpet weaving was transformed from a minor craft based on patterns passed down from generation to generation into a statewide industry with patterns created in court workshops. In this period, carpets were fabricated in greater quantity than ever before. They were traded to Europe and the Far East where, too precious to be placed on the ground, they were used to cover furniture or hung on walls. Within the Islamic world, especially fine specimens were collected in royal households.

Carpeting, Indoor Air Quality, and the Environment
From EBN Volume 3, No. 6 November/December 1994 Contents:
Carpeting has become ubiquitous in North America, covering more floors in homes, businesses, and institutions than all other floorcoverings combined. We love it for its softness, dirt-hiding ability, acoustic muffling, and low cost. Recently, however, carpets have come under fire for their potential role in indoor air quality problems, and they've been questioned for their typically short service life. Carpets have come to have two strongly contrasting images in our culture: they represent the warmth and comfort of home, but also the worst of our fossil-fuel based, disposable society. Carpets have been gradually increasing their share of the floorcovering world for the last few decades. Once a luxury reserved for the very rich, carpets and rugs now cover 70% of the floors in the United States. In 1993 Americans purchased 5.5 square yards of carpet per person, or nearly 1.5 billion square yards totalenough to cover nearly 40% of Rhode Island. Between 1960 and 1993, carpet purchases grew by 654%, while the average cost of carpets in real dollars dropped dramatically. Cheap fossil fuels and mass production have made very inexpensive carpet possible. Our look at carpets addresses the indoor air quality (IAQ) concerns and also some broader environmental questions.
