    About Symmetry and Pattern
Rug Gallery About Oriental Carpets Educational Resources ... About This Web Site
ORIENTAL CARPETS have long been appreciated for their beauty. That beauty is achieved through the choice of colors and designs, as well as by the manipulation of designs and colors to form pleasing patterns. Patterns in Oriental carpets are never quite what you expect - a surprise here, a flourish there, a change of color, the flip or rotation of a design where you might not predict it. The more you look, the more variations you will find. How can we explain this phenomenon? Is it the result of human choice, or human error? The study of symmetry offers one approach to analyzing patterns in Oriental carpets. Through symmetry analysis we may identify areas of pattern that exhibit expected repetitions, and areas that vary from that expectation. The Textile Museum The Math Forum @ Drexel

Introduction During the past century, the Oriental rug has become valued throughout the world as a work of art. With its rich history and color, the Oriental rug often is called the aristocrat of carpets. Although the Oriental rug of today may not soar through the air like the magic carpet of Arabian legend, the Oriental rug does perform magic, transforming interior spaces into extraordinary spaces. The term, Oriental rug, traditionally has been used to describe hand-knotted rugs from the East. The process typically involves stretching warp threads on a loom and knotting the pile to these threads. When a row of knots is completed, a weft thread is inserted. Once the entire carpet is knotted, the pile is shorn. To a large degree, the precision of the design depends on how tightly the rug has been knotted and how short the pile has been cut. The rug's density, or number of knots per square inch, can be a useful indicator of the fineness and durability of the rug the more knots the better. A superb Oriental rug may have more than to knots per square inch.

rugs.turkmens.net carpets.turkmens.net Rugs and Carpets Classifications and Definitions by: "ASHGABAT RUG PLANT" Carpet-weaving is one of the most ancient forms of Turkmen applied art. Each woman was taught this iraditional art from the early age.
The magical beauty and longevity of Turkmen rugs come from the traditions of carpet-weaving, that reached high perfectness and artistic expressiveness of gel during the many centuries of its existense.
It's hard to say when the Turkmen people began to weave their first rugs, too hard. We may just suppose that they weave them from the very ancient time. Pile carpet-weaving is. a complicated and long process. Just skilis in accordance with rare artistic talent based on the ancient traditions make possible tlýe creating of infinitely compticated and varied carpet patterns using the most primitive means of production.
Carpet-weaver creates the whole composition and ornamentation of the rug only by means of her 'imagination and memory, combining patterns in a new interpretation. That's why the creative activity prevail in production of rugs.
The chief role in Turkmen rugs is played by ornamentation with its general components - main and supplementary "gels". The origin of ornamental carpet designs has realistic basis. Just reality was reflected in the carpet design: surrounding nature, tife and habits of Turkmen peopie. The weavers reflect their feelings and dreams, joy and grief, their hopes and wishes. If you look more attentive you'll see the history of origin of Turkmen people, tribe, region and nature of the weaver. Besides, the gels express heroism, courage arýd devotion to the Motherland.

Paris The term 'mosaic' derives from the Latin musivum opus . It originally described the mosaics which decorated the walls and vaults of natural or artificial grottoes, and of fountains ( nymphae ), those being the most important elements of Roman gardens from the first century BC. These gardens dedicated to the Muses were called musaea , hence musivum opus , in abridged form musium , becoming 'mosaic' in translation. Mosaic art in the Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods Mosaics, as such, are not found in the art of the ancient civilizations of the Near East. During the fourth millennium BC, a form of decoration arose in Mesopotamia which approximated to later mosaic techniques. Small cones of hardened clay, dyed with various colours, were pushed into the mud walls of buildings before they dried, leaving the round bases of the cones to decorate the surface. An example of this has survived in the palace of Uruk in Chaldea. It was, however, the Greeks who, in the humbler sphere of domestic floor-surfacing, originated all later architectural mosaic decoration. There are two types of mosaics, corresponding to the two great phases of the historical development of mosaic art: pebble-mosaics which characterized the Classical period, and tessera-mosaics in the Hellenistic period.

Cleaning Carpets and Floors after a Disaster
    Publication Number 490-311, August 1996
    General
Cleaning water-soaked carpets and floors is a difficult chore in itself, but in the aftermath of a flood or hurricane, contamination by mud, silt, sewage, and mildew can compound the problem. It's best to get professional cleaners to work on carpets and floors, but this may not be possible. In any case, begin cleanup as soon as possible.
    Tips
    • Pull up carpets and rugs and drape them outdoors.
    • Hose carpets down. Use a stiff-bristled broom to work a low-sudsing, disinfectant carpet cleaning product deep into soiled spots.
    • To discourage mildew and odors, rinse with a solution of two tablespoons bleach to one gallon water. DON'T USE THIS SOLUTION ON WOOL CARPETS
    • Dry carpet and floor thoroughly before replacing carpet to avoid future mildew problems and shrinkage. Use fans, vacuum cleaners and dehumidifiers to speed the drying.
    • Waffle weave and foam or rubber-type pads may be dried and reused.
    • Sections of subfloors that separate must be replaced to avoid buckling. When floor coverings are removed, allow subfloors to dry thoroughly, even though it may take several months.
    • In wood floors, remove a board every few feet to reduce buckling caused by swelling. Ask a carpenter for tips on removing tongue-and-groove boards.
