Publication in Berlin, Germany, of Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not) by , the Philippines' most illustrious son, awakened Filipino national consciousness.
U.S. foreign policy is influenced by Alfred T. Mahan who wrote The Influence of Sea Power upon history, 1600-1783 , which advocated the taking of the Caribbean Islands, Hawaii, and the Philippine Islands for bases to protect U.S. commerce, the building of a canal to enable fleet movement from ocean to ocean and the building of the Great White fleet of steam-driven armor plated battleships.

formed the Katipunan , a secret, nationalistic fraternal brotherhood founded to bring about Filipino independence through armed revolution, at Manila. Bonifacio, an illiterate warehouse worker, believed that the Liga was ineffective and too slow in bringing about the desired changes in government, and decided that only through force could the Philippines problem be resolved. The Katipunan replaced the peaceful civic association that Rizal had founded.

39. Congresswoman Donna Christian-Christensen - Virgin Islands - History And Geograp
It was in keeping with this general European trend that The islands enjoyed a golden age of commerce and Thomas became a key caribbean port for transshipment
http://www.house.gov/christian-christensen/vi_history.htm
  • HISTORY
The Virgin Islands were discovered by Christopher Columbus in November, 1493, on his second voyage to the new world. He named the islands after the legend of St. Ursula and her 11,000 seagoing virgin martyrs. The discovery of the Virgin Islands like the rest of the West Indies, was followed by Spain’s assertion of exclusive right to them on the basis of prior discovery. The concession granted by Spain to other European nations to trade in the West Indies was but the first step towards their establishment of colonies. The decline of Spanish power in the seventeenth century made it increasingly difficult for Spain to protect its monopoly. Accordingly, other nations were able to breach it. The direction of settlement was indicated by Spanish neglect to colonize the smaller islands of the lesser Antilles in favor of the Greater Antilles. Beginning with the English, followed by the French and the Dutch, the seventeenth century witnessed an increasing invasion of Spanish territorial claims to the West Indies. The crowned “heads” of Europe were eager to exploit the West Indies and colonization was encouraged on a large scale. It was in keeping with this general European trend that Denmark chartered the West Indian Company and established its first colony in St. Thomas in the second half of the 17th century, before expanding its control to St. John, and buying St. Croix from the French in 1733. For 251 years, under Danish rule, the islands developed as sugar growing, slave holding estates. The islands enjoyed a golden age of commerce and development due to Denmark’s policy of neutrality plus the granting of liberal trading laws. St. Thomas became a key Caribbean port for transshipment between Europe and the Americas. Raw materials were assembled from within the region and exchanged in North America and Europe for processed goods.

Avoiding Travelers' Diarrhea.
Eliot C. Heher, MD
Global travel can be extremely enjoyable, but it also creates some health risks for the traveler, including most commonly Travelers' Diarrhea, or TD for short. (This is a condition with many other names, such as Montezuma's Revenge, for example). This column will focus on basic information about TD and the food and water precautions you should follow to avoid this scourge. Next time I'll focus on the treatment of TD. TD is extremely commonstriking 30-70% of travelers to developing countriesand the best evidence is that nearly all cases are caused by infectious agents, such as viruses, bacteria, and protozoa. The two most common symptoms are diarrhea and abdominal cramping. Nausea and vomiting, bloating, malaise, fever and blood in the stool also occur. TD usually strikes quickly, typically during the first week of your trip, but can occur upon return home. Most cases last 3-4 days, untreated, and 90% resolve within a week. According to the CDC, the risk of acquiring TD is highest when you travel to developing countries in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Intermediate risk destinations include countries in Southern Europe and several Caribbean islands. Low-risk destinations include Canada, Northern Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and many of the more developed Caribbean Islands.
