Polyrhythm and the Caribbean: Intersections of Culture, History, and Literature
General Introduction
David P. Lichtenstein '99 , Brown University, Contributing Editor, Caribbean Web
POLYRHYTHM, also called CROSS-RHYTHM: the simultaneous combination of contrasting rhythms in a musical composition. Britannica Online The steel drum, first created from oil drums in Trinidad's poorer urban areas as a means of cultural resistance to economic hardship and oppression, has quickly become the instrument most clearly identifiable with the Caribbean. Visitors to the region regularly encounter the steel drum (or pan as it is also called), from tourist welcomings in the airport, to performances at local fish fries, to the three day Trinidadian barrage of steel and soca music known as Carnival. But one never finds a solitary steel pan. Rather the instruments commonly exist as but one piece in a community of percussions that make up a steel pan band. In the days and weeks before Trinidad's Carnival, one can hear these bands warming up in the Panyards, perfecting the tunes and rhythms that will fire the streets of Port of Spain (the capital city) and shake the bones of all participants. But there is nothing new about this phenomenon. In fact one could say that the multiple rhythms which from the beginning have shaken the Caribbean gave birth to the steel drum, rather than the other way round. Most obviously one finds this sense of polyrhythm in geography. The fact remains that multiple islands, many geographically and geologically quite different from the others, all unite to form the West Indies region. But this rhythmic structure also lies far deeper than what one could find on a map. Historically, rhythms from around the world have clashed and combined to make up the modern day Caribbean. Digging through the layers of history, one first locates the shadowy presence of American Indians. Tribes such as the Caribs and the

Some facts about the history of Curaçao
The island was discovered in 1499 by Alonso de Ojeda, one of Kolumbus´ lieutenants. The inhabitants were very big Indians. That is why the Spaniards called the island "Isla de los Gigantes" ( island of the giants) but only 20 years later the name "Curaçao" appeared on a Portuguese map. There are different opinions about the word "Curaçao". The most probable is the one that the Spaniards called the island after a certain period of time "Corazon" ( heart). The famous Portuguese cartographers of this time took this word to their language as "Curacau" or "Curaçao".
The island stayed Spanish till the Dutch conquered it in 1634. From the end of the 17th century to the beginning of the 19th century the island was under English or Dutch rule, while the French tried again and again to conquer it. They nearly succeeded in doing so but after being paid an enormous compensation the French left again. In 1815 the Dutch gained control over the island again which had been under English rule (since 1807) then. The "colonial" status of Curaçao and of the other islands of the Dutch Antilles was changed in 1954 when the Dutch Antilles gained complete self-administration.
Contacts and confrontation between the Indian, European, African, Asian, and Arabian cultures in the course of several centuries have caused a reciprocal influence and made new forms of living together possible. Curaçao has developed a unique culture of its own.

The Pre-European Population
Estimates of the size of the pre-Hispanic population of the Americas vary considerably. Both Columbus and Father Bartolomé de Las Casas (who wrote the first history of the Spanish conquest and treatment of the Indians) produced estimates that appear to defy credibility. Las Casas thought the population of the Caribbean might have been in the vicinity of several million, and by virtue of his having lived in both Hispaniola and Cuba where he held encomiendas , or the right to tribute from Indians, he is as close as we get to an eye-witness account. Las Casas had a penchant for hyperbole, and it is doubtful that he could have produced reliable estimates for areas where he did not travel. Nevertheless, some more recent scholars have tended to agree with Las Casas, estimating as many as 4 million inhabitants for the island of Hispaniola in 1492. Although the dispute continues, a consensus seems to be developing for far lower figures than previously accepted. An indigenous population of less than a million for all of the Caribbean would still be a relatively dense population, given the technology and resources of the region in the late fifteenth century. Probably one-half of these inhabitants would have been on the large island of Hispaniola, about 50,000 in Cuba, and far fewer than that in Jamaica. Puerto Rico, Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, and Trinidad all had fairly concentrated, if not large, populations.

Grenada - dubbed the 'Spice Island' because of its impressive production of nutmeg, mace, cinnamon, ginger and cloves, it has a rugged mountainous interior of rainforests and waterfalls and an indented coastline with protected bays and beaches. Its capital, St George's, has one of the prettiest harbour settings in the Caribbean
Tourist infrastructure is still generally small-scale and locally owned, offering a good balance between comfort and price, making Grenada a great getaway for those travellers wanting to avoid the Caribbean resort experience. The secret to a successful visit to Grenada is to mix up the beach (in)activity with getting out and about in the island's interior with a good pair of hiking boots.
