Washington Post: The Washington Post's Katharine Graham Dies
TIME Book Review: 'Personal History'
Tuesday, Jul. 17, 2001 It’s often been said that Katharine Graham lived two lives: One as a self-described "doormat wife" and another at the helm of a Fortune 500 publishing giant. It was in her second incarnation that she first came to my attention. As a young woman testing the testosterone-infused waters of news writing, I invoked her name more than once. The 84-year-old Graham died Tuesday. She had been unconscious since Saturday, when she fell and hit her head on a walkway in Sun Valley, Idaho. Setting an example After I became aware of her existence early in my career, I would sometimes wish myself into her highly evolved presence: What must it be like to work for someone like Mrs. Graham? I mused occasionally as I watched a parade of dark-suited men pile into an executive boardroom.

Providing Evidence of Specific Skills
Every occupation can be defined in terms of a range of skills and abilities. Some of these will be intellectual skills, such as a good memory, specialist knowledge, numeracy or the ability to write clearly and precisely. Other skills will be more concerned with how you interact with other people, such as face-to-face communication, supervision, persuasion, or working in a team. Selectors need to be convinced that you have the relevant abilities and skills required for a particular occupation. Initially they will look on your application form for evidence of these abilities, and then at a later stage question you more closely during interview.
The terms relevance and evidence are key words in the application process. You first need to determine the actual skills required in a given occupation, and then consider which of your past experiences would best demonstrate that you already have these abilities, or the potential to develop them further.
The following list of skills is not exhaustive, but it does represent a good reflection of the range found within a large number of occupations. (You could use

Limited access to training programs is one of the most significant obstacles faced by women journalists in Africa. Media women everywhere continue to express a strong desire for informal and formal training that will help advance their careers. This online list of resources includes programmes where journalists can obtain specific skill-building, reporting and management training. Fellowships Many of the fellowship listed are regularly compiled and updated by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) in their "Guide to International Journalism Fellowships." The ICFJ was established in 1984 to improve the quality of journalism in nations where there is little or no tradition of independent journalism, coordinates a number fellowships and exchanges and conducts a variety of training seminars and conferences.

Customer Reviews There are two things wrong with this book: it is out of date, and in my opinion encourages mediocre writers to enter the market. The truth is you can make good money as a tech writer today, as a "captive" or as a "freelancer". The one point that Peter does not make strongly enough is that you have to be GOOD at it. You can't just take a few correspondence coarses, suddenly call yourself a tech writer, and expect to make a lot of money. It's so much more than grammer and styletoo much to get into here. Skip this book and find yourself a mentor instead. Look for related books on other categories Other related products Still didn't find what you want?

WRITING TO REACH YOU
Early symptoms. An alphabeticised record collection. An ability to name not just the title and artist, but also the remixer and label of every tune on every advert. A mistaken belief that your date wants to hear about the minutae of Derrick May's career. Yup, you're a trainspotter, and since you've forfeited a normal social life you might as well try and make some cash out of all that trivia in your head. Which means either becoming a pub quiz champion or a music journalist. Pub quizzes might possibly be more profitable and are equally as bad on your liver, but as Paul Clarke found, most lack a 'nu-jazz and broken beats- round and don't get you loads of free records or entry to a life of jet-setting glamour. Or drinking the leftovers of bands' riders, at any rate.
We don't need no education
Having diagnosed myself at an early age I always had scribbling as a career goal and thus did what was euphemistically called a 'Journalism' degree. If it had been an honest description it would have taught me about tax returns and the best way to bully money out of accounts departments. As it was I learnt an awful lot about the post-structural symbolism of 'South Park' (no joke) and one important lesson - qualifications mean nothing if you can't actually write. Several editors have told me that they are wary of hiring people with Journalism MAs because after years of having set journalistic styles drilled into you few people get to develop the individual voice editors are looking for.

Writing a book, whether fiction or non-fiction, seems like a daunting task - and it is. That's why many people try out other shorter forms of writing before tackling 'the big one'. Often they enter fields like journalism and publishing to hone their skills. Patricia O'Reilly kick-started her career in such a fashion. She explains, "I started writing short stories and had great success to begin with. But the market for short story writing in Ireland is small, and it's difficult to have sustained success." Rather than committing herself to being a novelist, O'Reilly first turned her attention to feature writing for newspapers. Since starting her journalism career, she has been published in the country's most widely read newspapers and magazines. She has also produced a number of radio documentaries and written four works of non-fiction, including Writing for the Market (published by Mercier Press). It comes as no surprise to learn that O'Reilly, who is regularly invited to give workshops on this subject, has definite ideas on how to approach a newspaper or publisher for work.

The primary emphasis in both the graduate and undergraduate programs is practical instruction, focused on writing and reporting skills, complemented by the study of journalism, literature, ethics, law, history and criticism. Students learn to research, report and write, using New York City as a classroom. They are urged to begin publishing high quality journalism well before they graduate, in part through classes and internships geared to this purpose. Wimps of the Roundtable and Other Challenges for Journalism Schools
by Wayne Robins
Last summer there was a sorrowful letter posted by a Chicago-area newspaper writer on journalism's online Village Green, Jim Romenesko's Media News . The reporter lamented being on the receiving end of Harrison Ford's sneer, a sneer of no small contempt.
Reason: The reporter had begun a disastrous roundtable interview with Ford, who was promoting his Russian submarine movie "K-19," by asking a question about a previous Ford movie, the title of which the reporter couldn't recall. It was downhill from there.
The reporter sulked in print about the star's boorishness, without acknowledging his own lack of preparation. He was fortunate Ford did not revert to an earlier role and deliver the hack 19 lashes with Indiana Jones' bullwhip.
Didn't anybody teach these people how to conduct a celebrity interview? Didn't anyone teach them the rule that you always open with a question about the new project, and keep asking them? Then I realized: Of course not.
I suspect that this problem, of journalists unequipped to lob even a softball to Harrison Ford, much less throw him the curve at which he would swing, did not give a restless moment to Columbia University President Lee C. Bollinger as he suspended the search for a new Dean of the Graduate School of Journalism in order to reevaluate the mission of the program.
