http://www.uce.ac.uk/crq/publications/dr/drexec.html
l l l l l l Destinations and Reflections is a unique, in-depth study of the careers of art and design graduates. The study was based on a partnership of 14 institutions and involved nearly 2000 graduates. The research was co-ordinated and the report written by the Centre for Research into Quality (CRQ) at the University of Central England in Birmingham. The survey provides a basis for exploring some of the prevailing myths about art and design education. The Destinations and Reflections In essence, art and design graduates exhibit, or rapidly develop, most of these attributes and are well-placed to make inroads into the graduate recruitment market. However, it is a moot point whether the graduates themselves are aware of this, whether they get assistance from their institutions to make the most of their attributes and, fundamentally, whether those teaching in the sector are aware of the employment prospects. Thus, in the current and likely future world of work, all graduates need to be flexible and adaptable and to be unafraid to take the initiative in the workplace. Art and design graduates, as much as, or more than, graduates from many other fields, appear to be adaptable and, certainly early in their careers, are prepared to take change in their stride. Destinations and Reflections demonstrates that a significant proportion of art and design graduates are sought by employers for their skills and retained in the sector. It also shows how graduates from across the sector are valued for their education in a wide range of other occupations.

Human Resources Issues in Visual Arts Industry
    (Part 1)
'Establishing a career in the visual arts and crafts can be an arduous experience... There are few jobs, in the usual sense of the word, for artists and craftspeople. Most practice their work as self-employed individuals.'
Creators of original art in Canada face a wide range of significant human resources challenges including education, new technology, public policies, career strategies, and access to job information. These ongoing areas of concern impact the financial success of visual artists and craftspeople. 'In fact, in many art schools, the prevailing attitudes do not support the view that artists and craftspeople should sell their work on a commercial basis. In essence, that attitude undermines the idea that one can have one's primary occupation as an artist or craftsperson.' (p. iii) A limited understanding of business and marketing is clearly an obstacle to the self-employed artist or craftsperson. Art schools focus on the development of techniques and creative thought but give little attention to skills required to make a living in the arts. In addition, job opportunities in traditional areas such as teaching at art schools or universities are not growing. At the same time the number of artists is expanding. From 1981 to 1991, the cultural labour force grew by 32 per cent, more than double the growth of the labour force as a whole. It does not seem to have slowed. A growing number of artists and craftspeople are second career, older individuals who have either retired or been impacted by downsizing.

Artist-run spaces to launch young careers Federal Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, today announced a funding boost of $89,398 to Artist Run Initiatives across Australia in support of the career development opportunities for hundreds of visual artists and craftspeople-part of the Federal Government's Young and Emerging Artists' Initiative administered by the Australia Council. 'This is the fifth year in which the Visual Arts/Craft Board of the Australia Council has administered support for the program expenses of Artist Run Initiatives, with the sole purpose of providing artists and craftspeople in the early stages of their career with greater opportunities for public exposure and professional development,' Senator Kemp said. Artist Run Initiatives are operated by artists on a non-profit basis throughout Australia, with a program of activities that includes regular exhibitions that showcase the work of young and emerging artists. Chair of the Visual Arts/Craft Board Victoria Lynn said, 'The Board was particularly impressed with the quality of the expressions of interests received, indicative of the artistic talents and creative imagination of many Artist Run Initiatives in this country'.
