PHILOSOPHY OF COURSE:
The student that has elected Arts and Crafts will be expected to develop processes and techniques in crafts that could be used throughout a lifetime. Emphasis will be placed on hands-on projects. PROCEDURES FOR EVALUATION:
Evaluation is based on the observation of process and final product. The student's degree of competence in the technical skills associated with the processes of media, evidence of understanding and applying concepts associated with visual language in their own art products, and the visual and verbal literacy associated with aesthetics and criticism through oral responses will be compared to specific declared lesson objectives.
For example:
Does the student produce work that is functional?
Does the student's work exhibit pleasing design qualities?
Does the student exhibit a high degree of craftsmanship in his work?
Important attitudes associated with the visual arts will also be evaluated through observation of exhibited behaviors.
For example:
Does the student value craftsmanship?

College of Creative Arts Undergraduate Programs
The Art Department at San Francisco State University offers one of the most vital programs in Northern California for the study of visual arts. Courses in the Department are taught by leading Bay Area artists and scholars who work in various disciplines in the program. Offerings include courses in most traditional media as well as in innovative and multidisciplinary techno-media. Coursework in the history of art, available to majors and non-majors alike, offers training in the history and critical appreciation of works of art. The Bachelor of Arts degree in Art provides concentrations based on the study of painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, textile arts, photography, conceptual design/information arts, art education, and art history. The program provides a strong background in the practice of fine arts and art history at the undergraduate level and is an excellent foundation for students desiring further study in the field. The graduate programs include a 30-unit Master of Arts degree which provides an emphasis in art history, and a 60-unit Master of Fine Arts in studio art. Students wishing a less intensive course of study may take the minor program in Art. The Art Department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

Back MAEA VISUAL ARTS CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK CAREERS IN ART There are two primary reasons to include career awareness and exploration as part of a K-12 art curriculum. These reasons are the need to understand the role of visual art makers and visual thinkers in any culture and to understand the role of art in our daily lives. While not all students may develop the focus or interest to pursue a career in the visual arts, all will be recipients of visual imagery and related work generated by the visual makers and visual thinkers. Those who may have an interest but do not pursue a visual arts career should develop a life-long relationship with some feature of the visual arts. All of these avenues of exploration should be a part of a student's K-12 art education experience. For those students who have the desire to work within the art field should come the realization that there are over two hundred directly or indirectly related careers in visual arts. Arts related careers represent one of the fastest growing segments of the job market. Students can look at general categories of food, clothing, shelter, education, mass and technical media, social and service agencies, transportation, as well as the fine, decorative, and applied arts. A collaborative effort by parents, teachers, guidance personnel, and administrators is needed to help students connect their learning to career opportunities and needs. The following list provides names for various art career titles:

AN UNPRECEDENTED EXHIBITION SERIES OF CONTEMPORARY CRAFT This September sees the launch of the Show5 exhibition series, a unique collaboration of five venues highlighting
the amazing work and careers of five UK artists from the contemporary crafts arena. Today contemporary craft is everywhere, from magazines to television programmes to high-profile exhibitions in museums and galleries worldwide. In a series of retrospective exhibitions Show5 reveals how contemporary craft is, and has been, historically at the leading edge of new ideas and progressive thinking. Driven by creativity and individuality, the artists featured are pioneers of unique work that has influenced many people and whose impact will be seen in years to come. The Show5 artists are Jim Partridge (wood), Michael Rowe (metal), Ann Sutton (textiles), Carol McNicoll (ceramics) and Richard Slee (ceramics).
Show5 provides a fascinating insight into the development of contemporary craft.
