Hoko Rarawe Industry Overview
The wholesale trade industry buys, sells and redistributes goods to businesses, organisations and retailers within New Zealand. Wholesale businesses provide the link between manufacturers, primary producers (such as farmers), overseas companies and the New Zealand retailers, businesses and organisations that use or sell products and goods. People in this industry are involved in work that includes:
  • managing supply and distribution networks
  • organising warehouses
  • assembly, sorting and grading of goods
  • selling, buying or purchasing.
The industry also employs people in administration, transportation, information technology and other technical roles. In 2001, 99,447 people worked in wholesale trade, a majority of those were in the North Island. The combined wholesale and retail trade sectors employ more than any other New Zealand industry - approximately 16% of the workforce. In 2001, wholesale trade was worth $8,531 million, or 8.1 of Gross Domestic Product (the total value of all goods and services produced in New Zealand). The wholesale industry is very diverse. Some companies are mainly involved in importing goods from overseas, while others specialise in supply to manufacturers or offer wholesaling services for manufacturer's goods. Large retail groups often organise their own wholesale importing or buying, sometimes by joining together with other retailers to bulk buy goods through wholesale subsidiary companies. A new and fast growing area of the industry are specialist distribution and warehousing companies that contract their services to other companies.

FUR COMMISSION USA COMMENTARY, AUGUST 12, 2001 Careers in the Conflict Industry
HSUS and the Making of a Conflict Industrialist
By FCUSA Executive Director Teresa Platt IN APRIL OF 2001, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Tom Knudson of the Sacramento Bee "Environment, Inc." has spurred calls for Congressional hearings and regulation of the US component of this multinational industry, which traffics in a continuous stream of conflict focusing on environmental or animal welfare issues. Response costs include citizen misunderstanding of various production processes, myriad conflicting laws, "pollution" of the commons in the form of law-breaking "direct action" at organized, highly visible photo ops ("protests" and "convergences"), and even eco-terrorism, which the conflict industry refuses to condemn and even romanticizes. Currently, the industry operates with little regulation, no oversight, no codes of ethics or standards, and no commitment to funneling a percentage of the monies raised into legitimate hands-on conservation and humane work. Unsurprisingly, many of the people who join this industry have backgrounds which are heavy on skills in public relations and the organizing of direct actions, and weak in the Earth or animal sciences. Lengthy arrest records are also commonplace.

Like their fathers, Washington-Lee High School students Felix Hernandez, 18, and Regis Diethorn Jr., 16, like to build things.
Jose Hernandez takes his son along to job sites in the Baltimore area as he paints, installs drywall and conducts home repairs. The elder Regis Diethorn takes the younger to building and repair projects in Arlington.
At first, the teens did the cleanup and "gofer" work. Then they signed up for a yearlong Carpentry I class at the Arlington Career Center, where they are learning the rules and regulations of the trade and how to hang drywall, cut rafters, frame walls and draft plans using a computer. Now they work on projects alongside their fathers, and they like going to school.
"It gets me through the day and through the rest of my classes," Regis Jr. says.
The two teens are among the thousands of D.C.-area high school students participating in career and technical education programs that give them a chance to explore potential careers and interests while gaining job skills.
"It really is a partner to the academic program at the high school," says William Sullivan, director of the Arlington Career Center at Arlington County Public Schools. "All students, regardless of if they are of the academic elite, should experience career and technology education."

Some of you may be attracted to or interested in work in a particular sector, business or industry (e.g. public sector, media, or pharmaceuticals) and information about most is available, from a variety of sources, and we have again collated the best links for you. The Department of Trade and Industry's web site provides information on about fifty industry sectors, including general overviews, government policies, current schemes and initiatives. The Trade Association Forum website lists hundreds of organisations representing a very wide spectrum of UK employers, and has alphabetical and functional search facilities. The Sector Skills Development Agency supports and coordinates the network of Sector Skills Councils which have been formed to tackle the skills and productivity needs of different sectors. Their websites provide information about the labour market, skills required in different sectors, how different types of qualifications relate to these skills, and training and development issues in the workplace. SSCs are independent, UK-wide organisations developed by groups of influential employers in industry or business sectors of economic or strategic significance. Sector Skills Councils replace the National Training Organisations (NTOs). Here is a list of the SSCs with links to their websites, or email contacts if no website is available yet. The SSCs marked with an asterisk are still under development.
