Careers Guide Career Opportunities in the Exhibition Industry

The aim of this guide is to give an overview of the exhibition industry, to introduce some of the many career opportunities that exist within that industry, and to provide information on how to pursue them. Background to the Exhibition Industry
Exhibitions are a key component of the communications and marketing mix. They play a major role in bringing national and international buyers and sellers together under one roof. They enable a potential buyer to see comparable products and services in action and speak to a sales person face-to-face, in a more informal setting than a sales presentation.
The exhibition industry is an important source of revenue to the UK, injecting nearly £2 billion per year into our economy. There are around 550 exhibition organisers in the UK, running almost 1,900 exhibitions, attracting over 17 million visitors (over 200,000 from overseas). In addition to trade generated at the event itself, those who travel to shows (both domestically and internationally) spend money on travel, accommodation and leisure tourism.

Our Industry: Careers in Agribusiness
Agriculture Employs America! Agriculture is America's largest employer, providing jobs for 21 million people. But did you know that 90 percent of the men and women employed in American Agriculture are not farmers? Most of them are employed in agribusiness a large sector of U.S. agriculture that handles grain from the time it leaves the farm to the time it becomes finished food products in the grocery store. People employed in agribusiness buy, sell, distribute, process and mill grain and feed for human, animal and industrial use. They work for the grain, feed and processing companies that transform raw agricultural commodities harvested by farmers into finished consumer products.
You Have a Lot to Offer..
Because you have an agricultural background, you are very valuable to the grain, feed and processing industry.
And Companies Need You!
The companies that market and/or process raw commodities need people with an understanding of grains and agriculture. For the U.S. to remain competitive, it needs a strong, efficient grain-handling system run by educated, ambitious people like you. From rural country elevators to feed mills, processors and giant export companies, this industry is looking for people who can make the U.S. agricultural marketing system run smoothly, efficiently and productively.

Quinten Babcock BEng (Hons) Management with Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering from Leeds University: Working for FaberMaunsell's Sustainable Development Group as an Engineer, Quinten is combining computer modelling work on many of the company's major projects with DTI part-funded research projects to promote energy efficient best-practice throughout the industry.
I started work at FaberMaunsell in August 1999 looking to make a positive impact on the environment through the construction industry. After an introduction to the various computer-modelling techniques available for designing in the 'Built Environment', I obtained a transfer into the Applied Research Department. I contribute to most of FaberMaunsell's major Building Services projects, such as high profile office developments, hospitals, hotels, and sports centres (including the indoor snowdome in Milton Keynes). I have also recently completed a major PiI project that investigated the possibility of integrating highly insulated buildings with combined heating and cooling systems to reduce overall life cycle costs through lower energy use and reduced capital expenditure. My role was to carry out various modelling analyses, write and collate reports and present these findings to the project's partners. The final project output involved a presentation (by myself) at the Chartered Institute of Building Services (CIBSE) national conference, and a CIBSE Technical Memorandum document to promote energy efficient best-practice throughout the industry.

Another bumper year for Malaysia-based US chipmakers
Industry group forecasts a 10-15% jump in sales
By Eddie Toh
In Kuala Lumpur , The Business Times, May 20, 2004
MALAYSIA, which has overtaken Singapore as a bigger trading partner of the United States, is set to see another bumper year in sales of electronics by Malaysia-based American companies, according to an industry group yesterday. Wong Siew Hai, the new chairman of Malaysian American Electronics Industry, yesterday projected its 19 member companies to register sales growth of between 10 per cent and 15 per cent this year. The members, including big names such as Intel Technology, Motorola and Dell, collectively posted sales of RM58.4 billion (S$26 billion) last year, up 13.8 per cent from the previous year. 'Their orders are so good that the only thing they are short of is their ability to deliver,' Mr Wong told reporters at a news conference yesterday. He said it was too early to tell if the projection will be derailed by the recent spike in oil prices and the cooling Chinese economy. The rising sales of Made-in-Malaysia electronics will help entrench Malaysia's position as the 10th largest trading partner of the US.

GIA Newsroom Breaking News: GIA Gem Laboratory to Issue Standard "Heat Treatment" Disclosure on Reports for Blue Sapphires with Unusual Color Concentrations
When, early in 2003, gemologists from the GIA and AGTA laboratories first noticed unusual color concentrations in a number of heat-treated blue sapphires, they were concerned that this might be a new form of treatment (figures1-3). In response, they launched an intensive, months-long research project that involved detailed documentation of many samples using standard gemological instrumentation and highly advanced analytical techniques, as well as two trips to Sri Lanka to visit the proprietor of the heating process and conduct heating experiments to understand better the color-causing mechanisms behind the unusual concentrations. The results required a fresh look at the changes that take place within the crystal lattice when sapphires are exposed to various heating conditions, and a reevaluation of how the GIA laboratory considers and discloses heat treatment on its corundum reports.

The way we live changes continually as we reap the benefits of rapidly improving technology. Like technology, law also touches virtually every aspect of our lives and often interacts with technology. Technology makes television possible, but the law increasingly determines such things as the technical specifications of a broadcast license, the privacy rights of "newsworthy" individuals and the necessary compensation for creators of musical scores and screenplays.
Sometimes, as with photocopiers and computers, technology influences the practice of law. More often, however, it is the other way around. Also, in our complex society, lawyers and technologists must cooperate in addressing many important questions. Were the shreds of "pot" found in the car really tobacco?
