Careers in Marketing
Description of Marketing Jobs
Almost a third of all Americans are employed in marketing-related positions. Thus, the number of possible marketing careers is enormous. Because of the knowledge of products and consumers gained in these jobs, marketing provides excellent training for the highest levels in the organization. A recent study by a recruiting firm found that more top executives have come out of marketing than of any other area. Marketing salaries vary by company and position. Beginning salaries usually rank only slightly below those for engineering and chemistry, but equal or exceed those for economics, finance, accounting, general business, and the liberal arts. If you succeed in an entry-level marketing position, you will quickly be promoted to higher levels of responsibility and salary. For recent information on jobs and salaries see the Career Center at SFSU. Marketing has become an attractive career for some people who have not traditionally considered this field. One trend is the growing number of women entering marketing. Women have historically been employed in the retailing and advertising areas of marketing. But they now have moved into all types of sales and marketing positions. Women now pursue successful sales careers in pharmaceutical companies, publishing companies, banks, consumer products companies, and in an increasing number of industrial selling jobs. Their ranks are also growing in product and brand manager positions.

THE CAREERS FAIR
Although this year's fair has now gone, this page will give you an idea of what next year's fair will be like.
A FAIR CHANCE
What do UKC graduates do?
A small part of the answer can be discovered at the UKC Careers Fair in March each year when almost 60 of them return to the campus to talk about the way that their careers have developed since they left student life for the big wide world.
What happens at the Careers Fair?
It is a very informal occasion - the graduates will be available for any interested student to chat to and to ask any questions that you might have about their career: how they got there, what the work is like and how you can follow in their footsteps. It is not a recruitment fair - these graduates will not be seeking to head-hunt for their current employer, or to "sell" a particular career to you - just to give students an impartial, insider's view of their chosen career. If you are in your second year, this is a particularly good chance to begin thinking about your career after graduation, or to find out more about the careers you are already considering. It's a chance to get behind the glossy careers brochures, or to find out about work that is rarely covered in the brochures. All students, though, are welcome - from first to final year ... and beyond.

Working in the BC Salmon Farming Industry
Salmon farming provides thousands of year-round jobs in coastal British Columbia. For many people, it's an opportunity for a challenging career and an excellent quality of life in a small and close-knit community located in a spectacularly beautiful part of the world.
The range of career options within the industry is wide, and working conditions are equally varied: from office work as a manager or administrator, to often very physically challenging outdoor work of various types.
About 1,800 people are directly employed in this industry, while indirect and induced employment is estimated at about 2,350 jobs.
After a recent provincial government decision to accept applications for new salmon farm tenures, the industry is poised for significant growth and capital investment over the next 10 years. Salmon farming is expected to eventually support a total of more than 12,000 full-time jobs in BC (both direct and indirect/induced).
