About studying sports medicine S ports medicine refers to many different areas of exercise and sports science that relate both to performance and care of injury. Within sports medicine are areas of specialization such as clinical medicine, orthopaedic, exercise physiology, biomechanics, physical therapy, athletic training, sports nutrition, sports psychology, and more. Many schools and universities have programs in sports medicine, and many professionals use the title of sports medicine. Nevertheless, the term sports medicine is vague and has multiple meaning. Many professionals, in fact, use the term "sports medicine", when in reality they are either team physicians, orthopaedic surgeons, exercise physiologists, biomechanists, physical therapists, athletic trainers, or others. Therefore, studying sports medicine means the study of one of these fields which combine medical principals and sciences with sport and physical performance. The main question, then, is not how and where to study sports medicine, but which of these field of study interests you. T he careers in sports medicine vary as much as the fields of study. For example you can be either a

Significant Points
  • Work hours are often irregular; travel may be extensive.
  • Career-ending injuries are always a risk for athletes.
  • Job opportunities for coaches, sports instructors, umpires, referees, and sports officials will be best in high school and other amateur sports.
  • Competition for professional athlete jobs will continue to be extremely intense; athletes who seek to compete professionally must have extraordinary talent, desire, and dedication to training.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top We are a nation of sports fans and sports players. Interest in watching sports continues at a high level and recreational participation in sports continues to grow. Some of those who participate in amateur sports dream of becoming paid professional athletes, coaches, or sports officials but very few beat the long and daunting odds of making a full-time living from professional athletics. Those athletes who do make it to professional levels find that careers are short and jobs are insecure. Even though the chances of employment as a professional athlete are slim, there are many opportunities for at least a part-time job related to athletics as a coach, instructor, referee, or umpire in amateur athletics and in high schools, colleges, and universities.

Presidents of the Women’s Sports Foundation do not preside over the United States of America. But change the world? Why, that’s part of the job description. To continue the celebration of the Foundation’s 30th anniversary, we head straight to the women who have led this organization and helped ensure the far-reaching effects it is known for today. With candor and sincerity, former presidents Lyn St. James, Wendy Hilliard, Nancy Lieberman and Julie Foudy and current president Dawn Riley reflect on the projects they tackled, the victories they helped achieve and the challenges still to overcome. http://www.montana.edu/wwwpy/Careers/Sports Psychology.htm
Sports Psychology Sport psychology is a very small subarea of psychology, with limited jobs. Sports psychologists apply psychological methods and knowledge to the study and modification of the behavior and mental processes of people involved in sports. These psychologists generally perform three primary roles, namely teaching, research, and practice. Generally, sports psychologists are trained within the field of clinical or counseling psychology and physical education. Opportunities for sports psychologists include counseling in a sports medicine clinic or with a professional sports team, research in an academic setting involving student athletes, and developing enhancement programs for athletes.
