[Editor's note: URLs mentioned in the text of this article appear in Table 1
Our purpose in this article is to identify college and career sites that are good starting points for online exploration.
What next?" As senior year approaches, this bigger-than-life question looms large in the hearts and minds of high school students and their parents. Well before that time of the year when college decisions must actually be made, online resources can help students make informed choices. Today, with a great many colleges and universities having a presence on the World Wide Web, students can virtually visit hundreds of college campuses and focus on areas of personal interest. (See Table 2 ) Connecting to a college's home page and browsing through student activities, course catalogs, and the academic and social calendar can lead to an understanding of just what it would be like to be a student at that particular college. A personalized "short list" of colleges that best meets the needs of the individual student can be easily developed. We visited more than one hundred college and vocational Web sites before selecting those that are highlighted in the preceding sidebar. In our explorations, we discovered quite a few guidance sites whose commercial interests seemed to be primary, and those are not included here. Those that we have chosen will help guidance counselors, teachers, and library media specialists planning curriculum projects. In our two high schools, we have worked with our colleagues in the guidance, English, science, and foreign language departments and programs to prepare students for "life after high school." Using Internet resources, we have developed curriculum projects to help both juniors who are beginning the college exploration process and seniors who are preparing for college and employment.
