POLITICAL SCIENCE
Department Website
ABOUT THE PROGRAM Political science is the study of government and politics, and it is part of the liberal arts curriculum. The study of the liberal arts develops the capacity to think critically, to communicate effectively, to analyze and to solve problems in addition to providing training in a substantive discipline. With the increased importance of government in the lives of individuals, business and society, a degree in political science is an excellent preparation for life in the 21st Century. The Political Science Department in the College of Letters and Sciences provides students with the opportunity to take a wide range of courses in all areas of the discipline (American government and politics, public policy and administration, comparative government and politics, international relations and political theory) as well as political science methodology and internship opportunities. After meeting the breadth requirements, students can concentrate their remaining courses in one of the areas of the major. Political science also jointly offers a major in public policy and administration with the Management Department in the College of Business and Economics. The interdisciplinary international studies major is housed and coordinated in the Political Science Department.

These issues include concerns about environmental health, the nature and causes of violence in homes and schools, the influence of money in political campaigns, and how government agencies operate.
In an attempt to understand and influence public policy, more than 200 students have graduated with degrees in political science, and more than 125 students have graduated with degrees in sociology during the past 30 years.
Many graduates of the department attend graduate school to study such fields as public administration.

The real role of lawyers is important but far more mundane. Lawyers advise clients in legal matters. These legal matters can range from divorce proceedings, to the purchase and sale of property, to adoptions, to business contracts, to advertising and trademark issues, to criminal proceedings or civil law suits. They draw up legal documents, negotiate contracts and represent clients in court. They spend hours in law libraries and with online databases researching legal precedents. They plan and conduct interviews with witnesses, which in complicated cases can generate thousands of pages of testimony, all of which must be read and analyzed. For some corporate and private practice lawyers the prospect of moneyand lots of itis enough to overcome the tedium. These lawyers can easily pull in hefty six figure salaries averaging between $100,000 and $300,000 annually. But some reject the money and choose to use their law background in other ways. Some lawyers edit law books or teach in law schools. Others use their law skills as a stepping stone to public office. Some lawyers serve as elected or appointed public officials, including district attorney, public prosecutor, and judge. Others seek elected office as state or national legislators. At the highest levels, cabinet officers, heads of government agencies, and even the president of the United States are all frequently drawn from the ranks of successful law practitioners.

Why Political Science?
Many students want to know how governments are organized, how rules are made and how government influences the amount and distribution of social rewards. As a citizen you may want to know how to wield influence and change rules or outcomes, either through government or in other political situations. You may wish to work in government or in the many organizations that are regulated by and try to influence government. Any of these purposes can be served by a greater understanding of politics. The study of political science helps to prepare you for the exercise of your rights, duties and opportunities as citizens. Courses in politics can lead you to a fuller understanding of various areas such as American government institutions, legislative processes, foreign policy, international relations, public law and political theory. Many students see the value of combining an understanding of politics with other fields, such as the natural sciences, economics, business, sociology, education or philosophy. Students who study and work in these fields will find many instances in which their interests and goals are the subject matter of politics.

Careers in Law
Rules by which society governs itself are called laws. Such rules originated with the dawn of civilization. They began as simple tribal laws, passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth. Eventually they developed into formal written rules known as laws. As the population increased, society became more complex and the laws needed to govern it also became more complex. As a result, a need arose for persons to interpret the laws. We call these persons lawyers or attorneys. A lawyer's work deals with all aspects of social, economic, political and personal life. Therefore, the variety of practice in the field of law is practically unlimited.
How to Become a Lawyer
To become a lawyer in Missouri requires a great deal of dedication and education. A prospective lawyer must first obtain a college undergraduate degree, then score highly on a Law School Admission Test to be accepted into a law school accredited by the American Bar Association. If accepted to an accredited law school, the person wishing to become an attorney must successfully complete 88 hours of graduate study leading to a Juris Doctor degree. During this time, applicants also undergo a character investigation. After graduation from a law school, the prospective lawyer must pass a bar examination administered by the Missouri Supreme Court's Board of Law Examiners. The person desiring to become a lawyer then takes the oath of office and is issued a license to practice law by the Missouri Supreme Court. With the oath, the new lawyer becomes subject to the Rules of Professional Conduct, which are rules of ethics vigorously enforced by the Missouri Supreme Court. A violation of these rules can cause the lawyer to be suspended or disbarred from the practice of law.

Program Requirements

Students interested in legal study should get the most from their undergraduate education. A college education should stand on its own merits as preparation for a lifetime of active involvement in a diverse and changing society. Applicants who can convincingly demonstrate that they have challenged their thinking, reasoning, and writing skills usually impress admission committees. Your undergraduate education should be concerned with the development of basic skills involving: 1. Comprehension and expression in words
2. Critical understanding of human institutions and values with which the law deals
3. Creative power in thinking Courses that provide opportunities to increase these skills are valuable regardless of subject matter. English, logic, and political science courses fall within this category. Courses that involve reading cases and statutes and understanding citations will give you an advantage at the beginning of law school. Courses that provide a contest for law classes and sharpen your analytical skills are also helpful: courses that provided a basic understanding of business, accounting, finance, and statistics. Since you can go to law school from any major, consult the Pre-law advisor regarding the courses that will complement your major.

With his appointment to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois on August 30, 1991, Judge James Benton Parsons became the first African-American appointed to the federal district court. He was appointed by President John F. Kennedy. Judge Parsons was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He spent his childhood and youth in Decatur, Illinois, where his father, a minister-evangelist of the Disciples of Christ, and his mother, a school teacher, had moved with their four children, the youngest of whom was Judge Parsons. His ambition to enter the legal profession began when, as a teenager, he used to watch a friend's father in court and decided that the law was "the epitome of a dressed-up profession." He did his undergraduate work at James Millikin University and its Conservatory of Music, where he received the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1934. He financed his schooling by working as a composing room helper at the Decatur Herald Review newspaper.

    Nature of the Work
Lawyers. Lawyers, also called attorneys, act as both advocates and advisors in our society. As advocates, they represent one of the opposing parties in criminal and civil trials by presenting evidence that support their client in court. As advisors, lawyers counsel their clients as to their legal rights and obligations and suggest particular courses of action in business and personal matters. Whether acting as advocates or advisors, all attorneys interpret the law and apply it to specific situations. This requires research and communication abilities. Lawyers perform in-depth research into the purposes behind the applicable laws and into judicial decisions that have been applied to those laws under circumstances similar to those currently faced by the client. While all lawyers continue to make use of law libraries to prepare cases, some supplement their search of the conventional printed sources with computer software packages that automatically search the legal literature and identify legal texts that may be relevant to a specific subject. In litigation that involves many supporting documents, lawyers may also use computers to organize and index the material. Tax lawyers are also increasingly using computers to make tax computations and explore alternative tax strategies for clients.
